New Paper Published on Detecting Caries Beneath Resin Modified Glass Ionomer & Compomer Restorations

Posted on Thursday, September 20, 2018

A new paper published in the Dentistry Journal (https://www.mdpi.com/2304-6767/6/3/47) evaluated caries detection around the Sensitivity & Specificity 09 -17-2018 intact margins of resin modified glass ionomer and compomer restorations. The study found that The Canary System was more accurate than SPECTRA, DIAGNODent and visual examination. The sensitivity and specificity data (table on the right) indicate that The Canary System could find 90.7% of the caries where the other devices found less than 35% of the caries.

One of the major reasons for replacing restorations is tooth decay that develops around the edges of the filling. SPECTRA and DIAGNODent use fluorescence or glow from the tooth to detect tooth decay but filling materials including amalgam, composite, glass ionomer and compomers all fluoresce, making it difficult to accurately examine around the margins.

X-Rays can only aid clinicians to diagnose decay on the sides or interproximal areas of teeth and fillings placed in this area make it more challenging to use X-Rays to examine the edges of the restoration. Visual examination can only detect changes along the surface of the restoration.

The Canary System, with its unique crystal structure diagnostics can quantify, image, monitor and record changes in the structure of enamel, dentin and cementum. It can detect caries beneath opaque sealants, around the margins of restorations, around orthodontic brackets and beneath interproximal, occlusal and smooth surfaces. During a Canary Examination, the Canary Voice provides both the patient and dentist with the Canary Number. The Canary Cloud enables dentists to view and analyze this data and track Canary usage in their office. The Canary System engages patients in their oral health care.

A New Set of Teeth - Quicker Than Ever

Posted on Thursday, September 20, 2018

Over 120 million people in the U.S. are missing at least one tooth, and 36 million do not have any teeth at all. Without functioning teeth, many individuals encounter severe medical problems, struggle to eat solid food, and lose confidence.

For many experiencing tooth loss dental implants offer a chance for a fresh start, but traditionally treatments involved long, multi-step procedures that were complicated and costly. Thankfully, advances in technology and digital dentistry have changed all of that, with prosthodontists leading the way. Now, patients can have implant procedures done in as little as one day, leaving with a full set of new, healthy teeth.

"Many of my patients feel trapped in a never ending dental cycle," said board certified prosthodontist Craig Sikora, DMD. "Having a quicker solution provides much needed relief and hope."

This approach provides a restored smile quicker than ever, with fewer appointments, and much less hassle. The result is a better experience for the millions of Americans in need of transformative dental treatments.

"The first step is to find out if you are a candidate by speaking to a prosthodontist," said Dr. Sikora. "Patients will typically have a pre-procedure exam to review health history and design their smile. The next step is the one day dental implant procedure. Once healing is complete, patients return for another appointment to finalize their new smile."

Prosthodontists receive advanced training beyond dental school in the placement and restoration of dental implants, enabling them to provide safe, effective, and sophisticated treatment plans with implants, restoring your smile through the utilization of the latest dental technology.

As the leaders in the field of dental implants, prosthodontists perform more full-mouth implant restorations than any other specialty in the dental field; they are the professionals of choice for immediate smile transformations.

AAE Foundation for Endodontics to be Honored for Outreach Effort

Posted on Wednesday, September 19, 2018

On October 4, 2018, the Foundation for Endodontics will receive the 2018 Shils Fund Special Recognition Award at the Union League in Philadelphia in honor of its outreach program and support of Project Home. One of only two such awards granted annually by the Shils Entrepreneurial Fund, this exceptional tribute acknowledges the Foundation's efforts to serve low-income patients who might otherwise face tooth extraction.

Dr. Mary T. Pettiette, D.D.S., President of the Board of Trustees, will accept the award on behalf of the Foundation. "The Foundation for Endodontics is honored that we have been selected to receive the prestigious 2018 Shils Fund Special Recognition Award," said Pettiette. "One focus of our mission is providing access to endodontic care to underserved patients. We hope that the success of this first domestic program will lead to many others, supporting our efforts to help patients retain their natural teeth."

The Foundation opened its endodontics operatory at north Philadelphia's Stephen Klein Wellness Center, operated by Project Home, in April 2018, in keeping with its mission expansion in 2016 to include access to care and following the success of a similar international project in Jamaica. The operatory is staffed by endodontic residents and faculty members from Einstein's I.B. Bender Division of Endodontics, Department of Dental Medicine, including Philadelphia endodontist and Past President of the Foundation for Endodontics, Dr. Louis Rossman.

"The dream of the Foundation is to save natural teeth, treat infections and restore self-esteem by providing access to root canal treatment for patients who otherwise would lose their teeth and suffer the pain and social consequences." said Rossman.

As with the outreach program in Jamaica, the operatory in Philadelphia provides free root canal treatment to uninsured, low-income and homeless patients, educating them on the importance of good dental care and what is possible to save their teeth.

"I'd like to thank our individual and corporate supporters for their generous contributions which help make Foundation projects like these a reality," said Pettiette. "In particular, Carl Zeiss Meditec Inc., Brasseler and Henry Schein Inc., for making endodontic equipment available for use in the operatory."

About the Foundation for Endodontics

American Association of Endodontists' Foundation, headquartered in Chicago and incorporated in 1966, is the philanthropic arm of the AAE. As a 501(c)(3) charity organization, it is to support endodontics by providing resources and funding for research, education, public awareness and access to care. Penn Dental Medicine Awarded $1M Scholarship Grant from Delta Dental Community Care Foundation

Posted on Tuesday, September 18, 2018

PHILADELPHIA--()--Penn Dental Medicine students with a passion for serving vulnerable patients will now have a new resource to support their interests and goals thanks to a $1 million scholarship grant from the Delta Dental Community Care Foundation, the philanthropic branch of Delta Dental of Pennsylvania. Delta Dental’s Oral Health Education grant will endow in perpetuity the awarding of two $25,000 scholarships each year to DMD students who desire to work in an underserved area after graduation and who have demonstrated a commitment to community outreach during their studies. The grant award was announced in August and the first application cycle will open this fall for interested candidates in the current third-year class.

The scholarships, which will not reduce a student’s scholarship package from other Penn Dental Medicine resources, are intended to lighten overall expenses and debt during the recipient’s fourth-year of study with the goal of clearing a path for a student to pursue a career in community-based dentistry.

“The addition of this scholarship resource, even though it applies to the final stages of students’ DMD time and beyond, will be a tremendous resource in our recruitment efforts as well,” notes Dr. Sheridan. “The availability of scholarships to offset loans can be a deciding factor for students who may have considerable undergraduate debt, or who come from a financially challenged background.”

In addition to completing a minimum of 250 hours of community-based service and finishing all their DMD requirements on time in their fourth year, recipients must demonstrate employment in a medically underserved or health professions shortage area by October of their graduating year and commit to two years in that role after graduation.

“We are thrilled with the generosity and vision of Delta Dental to help us widen the doors of possibility for those students committed to serving communities in need as they enter professional practice,” says Dr. Mark Wolff, Morton Amsterdam Dean of Penn Dental Medicine.

Over time, Penn Dental Medicine foresees the fund also contributing valuable data to community health needs assessment. “These new dentists will be a valuable cohort to track to assess the impact scholarships can make in drawing more dental graduates into community-based service,” explains Dr. Gluch. “We will create a mechanism to remain connected to the Delta Dental scholars and to collect data on practice patterns to help inform our understanding of oral health of vulnerable patients and communities.”

“We’re delighted to have another opportunity to work together with Penn Dental Medicine to further our Foundation’s mission of increasing access to dental care in underserved communities in Pennsylvania and beyond,” says Karen Robinson, executive director of the Delta Dental Community Care Foundation. “This scholarship fund has the potential to improve health and enhance the lives of students and communities for years to come.”

This $1 million Oral Health Education grant further expands a relationship between the Delta Dental Community Care Foundation and Penn Dental Medicine. In 2017, the Delta Dental Community Care Foundation awarded Penn Dental Medicine a $650,000 grant to expand PennSmiles, the school’s oral health education and clinical care program for schoolchildren and their families in Philadelphia. The grant allowed for the purchase of a new, state-of-the-art mobile dental vehicle as well as the operational costs for educational programs. In addition, Delta Dental has supported Penn Dental Medicine students through its annual Student Leadership Award, a monetary award granted to an outstanding graduating dental school student.

For more information about the Delta Dental Community Care Foundation and its programs, please visit deltadentalins.com/about/community/philanthropy/.

This scholarship grant is a project of the Power of Penn Dental Medicine capital campaign, part of a University-wide initiative to raise support for scholarships, community outreach and access to care for vulnerable populations, research, and facilities.

Since 2011, the Delta Dental Community Care Foundation has awarded more than $3.6 million in the state of Pennsylvania. The Foundation’s mission is to increase access to quality dental care by providing funding and support to advance research, education and access to dental care across its 15-state service area and the District of Columbia.

BIOLASE Expands Its Initiative to Increase Dental Laser Awareness to Dallas-Fort Worth Area

Posted on Tuesday, September 18, 2018

BIOLASE, Inc., the global leader in dental lasers, announced today that it is expanding its successful laser dentistry awareness initiative to improve a region’s oral health and dental care options to the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The sales, marketing and training initiative started earlier this year in the Los Angeles and Orange County market in Southern California is dedicated to demonstrating the promise of the world’s most advanced oral health care. The initiative will include informational and awareness-raising programs that highlight the benefits of minimally-invasive, pain-free laser dentistry.

Local practice development representatives will be deployed throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area to help support dentists as they integrate dental lasers into their practice. They will offer guidance on different ways dentists can use lasers to provide better care and grow their practices.

BIOLASE will offer programs including educational courses and partnership events with local organizations, among other initiatives. The goal of the programs will be to educate local dentists and patients about the shift towards gentler dentistry, with less pain and fewer shots, now enabled by dental lasers.

“Seeing the success of our campaigns in Southern California, we are proud to expand our efforts and bring that momentum to the Dallas-Fort Worth region,” said Todd Norbe, President and Chief Executive officer of BIOLASE. “More patients will be aware of the benefits of minimally invasive laser dentistry, and more dentists will have the information, support and resources they need to deliver the best care possible to their patients, which is ultimately our goal. We will continue to expand these programs into additional cities across the country as we seek to achieve our goal of advancing dentistry.”

BIOLASE’s Waterlase ExpressTM has played a crucial role in expanding all-tissue laser use, making dental lasers more affordable and accessible. The simplicity and wide-ranging use of Waterlase lasers enable dentists to incorporate laser dentistry into their practices and enhance the quality of patient care. With increased support and education in the Dallas-Fort Worth region, local dentists will be able to further tap into this opportunity.

For BIOLASE, the initiative is becoming a commercial success, increasing all-tissue laser sales and consumables revenue in the Southern California market. In early August of this year, the Company reported a nearly 200 percent year-over-year increase in all-tissue laser sales in that market during this year’s second quarter.
