ADA Third Party Payer Concierge Program Comes Back to Life

Posted on Thursday, December 23, 2021

ADA restarting service in January that helps dentists with concerns regarding dental insurance companies

The ADA will restart its Third Party Payer Concierge service on Jan. 4 after a year-long hiatus.

The service, which assists dentists with insurance questions and concerns with third party payers, is for member dentists only and can be accessed by calling 1-800-621-8099 or emailing dentalbenefits@ada.org.

The program will be evaluated after a five-year period, according to Resolution 88H-2021, passed by the 2021 House of Delegates.

“Many dentists cite dental insurance as the source of one of their greatest frustrations and I am happy that the ADA Third Party Payer Concierge service will be back in January 2022,” said Mark Johnston, D.D.S., chair of the ADA Council on Dental Benefit Programs’ Dental Benefit Information Subcommittee. “This service provides much-needed assistance for dentists with insurance-related questions and concerns that they cannot find elsewhere. Even though many dentists’ issues come down to contractual obligations, the ADA can provide education on the nuances of doing business with dental insurance companies and how to empower themselves to make decisions that are best for their patients and their practices,” Dr. Johnston said.

He added, “Coordination of benefits is a constant source of confusion for many dental offices, and the Concierge will be able to help answer questions and address concerns regarding COB. Another common concern from dental offices involves claim denials. While the Concierge may not be able to get a claim paid for you, it can provide assistance with the appeals process. Lastly, dentists have reported concerns with poorly written explanation of benefits statements and the Concierge can also help dentists with EOB language questions as well.”

In addition to restarting the service, the resolution also calls for funds to be available for states to promote the Third Party Payer Concierge in 2022.

Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Announces New Editor

The Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (JOMS) – the official journal of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) – has named Thomas B. Dodson, DMD, MPH, FACS, as its new Editor-in-Chief, effective Jan. 1.

Dodson – Professor and Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Washington School of Dentistry – previously served as the journal's Associate Editor since 2011. He replaces James Hupp, DMD, MD, JD, MBA, FACS, who recently completed his third term leading the journal.

To fill Dodson's previous position, Tara Aghaloo, DDS, MD, PhD – Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Assistant Dean for Clinical Research at UCLA School of Dentistry – will be Associate Editor.

"Throughout my career, JOMS has been the backbone of our specialty, supporting the science on which we rely as clinicians," Dodson said. "I am humbled to be given this trust as its curator and to accept the reins from those who have so ably led the Journal."

An author of more than 150 peer-reviewed publications – including approximately 100 in JOMS – Dodson served as Principal Investigator for AAOMS-sponsored nationwide studies assessing outcomes of office-based anesthesia and third molar extractions in 2011-12. In 2003 and 2010, Dodson received the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) Foundation Daniel M. Laskin Award for the year's top scientific paper published in JOMS. Dodson's research interests focus on improving patient outcomes by applying and promoting evidence-based clinical decision-making.

Dodson earned his DMD from Harvard School of Dental Medicine and MPH from Harvard School of Public Health. He completed OMS training, a National Institutes of Health fellowship in clinical epidemiology and a residency in dental public health at University of California, San Francisco.

JOMS is published monthly by AAOMS to present dental and medical communities with comprehensive coverage of new techniques, important developments and innovative ideas in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Practice-applicable articles help develop the methods used to handle dentoalveolar surgery, facial injuries and deformities, TMJ disorders, oral and head and neck cancer, jaw reconstruction, anesthesia and analgesia. The journal also includes specifics on new instruments and diagnostic equipment, and modern therapeutic drugs and devices.

Vyne Trellis Evolves To Further Optimize Dental Billing While Adding a Suite of Communication Tools

Posted on Thursday, December 23, 2021

Vyne Dental is committed to helping dental practice leaders improve their revenue cycles through a comprehensive set of solutions to streamline eligibility, expedite reimbursements, and improve communication with patients and the practice team.

Vyne Dental®, a leading provider of revenue cycle, claims and practice management solutions, and electronic health information exchange for all-sized dental practices, announces sweeping, comprehensive enhancements to its Vyne Trellis™ platform.

Vyne Trellis, one of the dental industry's most comprehensive revenue cycle and communications engines, provides a robust end-to-end dental billing solution for dental claims management, including simple, integrated electronic attachments, batch and real-time eligibility and benefits verification, all in one intuitive, easy-to-use solution.

A few of Vyne Trellis' most innovative enhanced features include:

● Batch and real-time benefit plan eligibility verification to reduce the time practice team members spend on the phone with payers — office managers and billers receive verification of patient benefits within seconds through the Vyne Trellis web-based platform;

● A robust electronic attachment submission solution, that's connected to more than 800 payers across the country;

● A feature-rich portal that integrates a practice's submitted, processed, and paid claims, supporting attachments and documentation, and eligibility status — to each patient and their respective payer; and

● Intelligent validation engine to identify potential errors, such as missing subscriber IDs, claim form information, attachment requirements, and patient and provider detail, before electronically submitting claims to a payer — reducing rejected claims, creating efficiency in the billing workflow, and accelerating reimbursements back into the practice.

Vyne Trellis continues to evolve and, in so doing, redefine what "revenue cycle management solution" means to the dental practice. Throughout 2021, Vyne Dental strategically expanded its portfolio to add simple, customizable electronic forms, text and email reminders, online reviews, and secure communications, including email and inter-office chat portfolio.

This strategic shift allows dental practices on Vyne Trellis to initiate the electronic, automated interaction with their patients much earlier in their journey, thus ensuring a timely resolution to all revenue collection attempts, while simultaneously improving patient experience, reducing friction, and cutting costs.

Vyne Trellis eligibility and benefits verification

The Vyne Trellis real-time and batch eligibility feature helps any dental practice reduce the amount of time spent on manual interactions with payers. The instant claims validation system also identifies potential errors on submitted claims, like a missing insurance subscriber number, before submitting documents to payers.

Thanks to this intelligent feature, dental billers can reduce a practice's rejected claims, as well as speed up adjudication and drive revenue for the practice.

Vyne Trellis automated eligibility

In most major practice management systems, Vyne Trellis can see subscriber details, the patients' carrier, provider, and appointment information and send an eligibility request automatically, helping to eliminate the need to check these data entries manually.

Furthermore, automated batch eligibility verifies coverage and benefits for patients with a scheduled appointment in the practice's supported practice management software three days before a scheduled appointment. It enables staff to view responses without manually sending a request.

The new eligibility design offers easy searching and filtering by rows. This feature is currently available for Open Dental customers, with Dentrix and EagleSoft integrations coming shortly. This feature alone is one of the most well-understood and frequently endured pain points in any dental practice. Vyne Trellis helps eliminate it.

Additional new Vyne Trellis features

In addition to Vyne Trellis helping streamline every aspect of a dental practice's revenue cycle and automating claims management, the solution now features several new, cutting-edge tools to help power practices. Specifically, the most common searches are available in a single dashboard to shave minutes off of dental billing professional's workflows each day.

Vyne Trellis also includes many other important, new, and improved features:

Electronic Patient Forms

Vyne Dental has added its newly acquired OperaDDS solution features into the Vyne Dental portfolio, including its secure communication* and form creation capabilities. For example, forms and form creation are electronic and fully customizable – virtually any form of any kind can be created for any purpose.

Text and Email Reminders

In addition to the simple, yet powerful electronic forms, OperaDDS adds a robust reminder system with automated texts and emails to help ensure patients are confirmed for their appointments and show up on time.

Secure email*

Vyne Dental's secure email solution is built into Vyne Trellis, so it's the perfect and safe way for a practice to communicate sensitive and personal health information with specialist providers and patients.

Patient Reviews

With the integration of OperaDDS, Vyne Dental allows dental practices the ability to manage online reviews from patients. Positive reviews are automatically funneled to the review boards. Reviews from patients that rate below a certain threshold (negative reviews) are routed directly to the practice manager to address any potential issues.

Intra-office chat

Vyne Trellis now includes an intra-office chat feature that allows practice employees to communicate inside the practice quickly on a multitude of devices, including on a smartwatch! Doctors can see when patients are ready, if there is an emergency in the waiting room, or even if lunch has arrived. Internal chat capabilities help remove workflow friction present in most dental practices today and is a proven productivity booster.

Built with feedback from real users

"These latest features from Vyne Trellis result from Vyne Dental's industry understanding, experience, and direct, real-time feedback from users," said Steve Roberts, president of Vyne Dental. "We maintain multiple feedback loops with users and are always on the hunt for insights and priorities as we continue to invest in our solutions.

"Along with all of these high-impact developments, Vyne Dental continues to add more payer connections to support our eligibility responses and ensure electronic connectivity for all of your claims and attachments," Roberts added. "As the number of connections grows, the better our solutions can serve the needs of your practices."

Vyne Dental currently has more than 800 connections to dental insurance payers and, as a result, helps dental claims get paid more quickly and efficiently.

"Ultimately, Vyne Dental is helping to alleviate pain in dental practice revenue cycle management," said Vance Taylor, vice president of sales and marketing at Vyne Dental. "Providing access to real-time eligibility, for example, keeps you better informed on patient plan maximums, deductibles, and their care utilization. In addition, it can verify whether some procedure codes are covered under a patient's benefit plan – important to reducing the daily minutia."

Vyne Trellis is exceptionally user-friendly and allows billing managers to monitor claims from their dashboard, creating tremendous efficiency for the entire practice.

"At Vyne Dental, we aim to help dental practice leaders improve nearly every facet of their administrative demands so that they can continue to focus on patient care," Roberts concluded.

HPI Seeks Dentists In New Survey Panel to Track Economic, Operational Impact

Posted on Wednesday, December 22, 2021

Monthly poll now being called Economic Outlook and Emerging Issues in Dentistry

The ADA Health Policy Institute’s monthly COVID-19 economic results poll is evolving for 2022 and the institute is recruiting dentists to join the new survey panel.

In addition to asking some of the core economic questions the institute has been tracking, the scope of the poll — now being called Economic Outlook and Emerging Issues in Dentistry — will expand to ask questions about other issues facing dentistry.

The purpose of this research is to track the economic and operational conditions in dental practices and public health clinics over time and measure the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and other emerging issues in dentistry.

The institute will track data over time, so it is asking panel members to complete the survey on a monthly basis. The results will be analyzed in aggregate only — individuals will not be identified.

Each monthly survey will take less than 5 minutes to complete. Participation in each survey is voluntary.

Even those who are currently in the economic poll will need to re-join. All dentists, regardless of membership, are eligible to participate.

Dentists’ responses to date have created a database and reports that the ADA has used in producing resources to help dentists recover from the impact of COVID-19 and adapt to changing practice conditions.

Enrollment for the survey panel is available online.

Report Details 20 Years of Advances and Challenges of Americans’ Oral Health

Posted on Wednesday, December 22, 2021

Despite important advances in the understanding and treatment of oral diseases and conditions, many people in the U.S. still have chronic oral health problems and lack of access to care, according to a report by the National Institutes of Health. Oral Health in America: Advances and Challenges, is a follow-up to the seminal 2000 Oral Health in America: A Report of the Surgeon General. The new report, which is intended to provide a road map on how to improve the nation’s oral health, draws primarily on information from public research and evidence-based practices and was compiled and reviewed by NIH’s National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) and a large, diverse, multi-disciplinary team of more than 400 experts.

The report updates the findings of the 2000 publication and highlights the national importance of oral health and its relationship to overall health. It also focuses on new scientific and technological knowledge – as well as innovations in health care delivery – that offer promising new directions for improving oral health care and creating greater equity in oral health across communities. Achieving that equity is an ongoing challenge for many who struggle to obtain dental insurance and access to affordable care.

“This is a very significant report,” said NIH Acting Director Lawrence A. Tabak, D.D.S., Ph.D. “It is the most comprehensive assessment of oral health currently available in the United States and it shows, unequivocally, that oral health plays a central role in overall health. Yet millions of Americans still do not have access to routine and preventative oral care.”

The newly issued report provides a comprehensive snapshot of oral health in America, including an examination of oral health across the lifespan and a look at the impact the issue has on communities and the economy. Major take-aways from the report include:

● Healthy behaviors can improve and maintain an individual’s oral health, but these behaviors are also shaped by social and economic conditions.

● Oral and medical conditions often share common risk factors, and just as medical conditions and their treatments can influence oral health, so can oral conditions and their treatments affect other health issues.

● Substance misuse and mental health conditions negatively affect the oral health of many.

● Group disparities around oral health, identified 20 years ago, have not been adequately addressed, and greater efforts are needed to tackle both the social and commercial determinants that create these inequities and the systemic biases that perpetuate them.

“This is an in-depth review of the scientific knowledge surrounding oral health that has accumulated over the last two decades,” said Rena D’Souza D.D.S., Ph.D., director of NIDCR, which oversaw and funded the project’s three-year research program. “It provides an important window into how many societal factors intersect to create advantages and disadvantages with respect to oral health, and, critically, overall health.”

The COVID-19 pandemic emerged while the report was being written. The science around SARS-CoV-2 continues to come into focus in real-time, and, although data were only starting to surface about the oral implications of the disease, the authors included a preliminary analysis of it to assess initial impacts.

The authors make several recommendations to improve oral health in America, which include the need for health care professionals to work together to provide integrated oral, medical, and behavioral health care in schools, community health centers, nursing homes, and medical care settings, as well as dental clinics. They also identify the need to improve access to care by developing a more diverse oral health care workforce, addressing the rising cost of dental education, expanding insurance coverage, and improving the overall affordability of care.

“Although there are challenges ahead, the report gives us a starting point and some clear goals that offer reasons to be hopeful, despite those challenges,” added D’Souza. “It imagines a future, as I do, in which systemic inequities that affect oral health and access to care are more fully addressed, and one in which dental and medical professionals work together to provide integrated care for all.”

Scientists and public health professionals will use the report to identify areas of scientific inquiry and research as well as develop and implement programs that ultimately will improve the oral health of individuals, communities, and the nation.

To view or download the report, please visit the NIDCR website at https://www.nidcr.nih.gov/oralhealthinamerica.

Glidewell Names New Chief Executive Officer

Posted on Wednesday, December 22, 2021

Leading dental laboratory appoints Stephenie Goddard CEO alongside President Jim Glidewell

Effective Jan. 1, 2022, Glidewell Chief Experience Officer Stephenie Goddard, a 15-year veteran of the organization, will assume the role of Chief Executive Officer, held to date by company founder and president, Jim Glidewell, CDT.

"This is not a matter of me stepping down," Mr. Glidewell stresses. "But with all that we're doing in an effort to improve the lives of dentists and their patients, I could use another hand at the helm."

Goddard offers similar reassurance: "Jim is in the office every day, sharing his vision and insights and continuing to challenge us to develop solutions that improve the quality, speed and affordability of dentistry. His professional achievements have already had an indelible impact, but it's his relentless drive for continuous improvement that I find most inspiring. It's an unspeakable honor to be entrusted with the ongoing expansion of technology, services and communications that aim to increase patient acceptance and further grow dental practices everywhere."

Goddard left World Bank Group in 2006 to join Glidewell as vice president of human resources, and has since served in various executive-level positions governing business operations, product development, regulatory affairs, direct sales, customer experience, software development, analytics and more. She is particularly pleased with the public reception of the glidewell.io In-Office Solution, an artificial-intelligence-powered CAD/CAM system that enables clinicians to easily fabricate their own lab-quality, fully sintered BruxZir® Zirconia restorations in under an hour.

"People ask us why Glidewell would produce a machine that competes with its principal business of providing indirect lab services," she says. "But Jim's real business is to provide clinical ease and flexibility. Single-appointment services are often better for both the provider and patient. And anything that's better for provider and patient is better for Glidewell."

A staunch proponent of personal development, Goddard's impressive track record includes the implementation of employee learning programs and advanced leadership initiatives within and without the Glidewell organization. Her 2019 "Guiding Leaders" program was designed to empower women dentists in all facets of business and leadership, and contributed to her 2020 Mentor Award from The Lucy Hobbs Project®.

"Stephenie's strategic focus and ability to bring people together to orchestrate successful change has been critical to our success," Jim Glidewell adds. "After 15 years working alongside her, I know of no one better suited to serve the needs of our customers and our industry."

"I'm obviously humbled by the new title, and honored by Jim's faith and trust," Goddard says. "While the responsibility is daunting, I'm thrilled by the continued opportunity to positively impact the future of dentistry. As we like to say here: 'Every smile deserves a second chance.' "
