Valplast: Collaboration, GNYDM a Success

Posted on Tuesday, December 30, 2014

New York, NY - At the Greater New York Dental Meeting this year, Valplast International Corporation, Master-Touch Dental Laboratories, Inc. and Precise-Fit Services International, Inc. made quite an impression on attendees from the dental industry. With two booths - one in the GNYDM area and one in IDT | ColLABoration - there was no shortage of information and giveaways.

“The Greater New York Dental Meeting is our Home Show, and we’re always thrilled to support the conference and meet our local customers," said Peter Nagy, President and CEO of Valplast International Corp.  "This year we had our largest presence ever, and we are very pleased with the response.”

With two locations this year, the Valplast Enterprises presented their full range of products and services for both clinicians and laboratories. Their latest Digital Technologies for partial dentures were displayed by Master-Touch Dental Laboratories and Precise-Fit Services. Dentists and laboratory technicians had the opportunity to see and use Adjustment instruments for Valplast® and new Finishing and Polishing tools available from OrderValplast.com. The full line of Denture Home Care products was also on display.

Among some of the new products, the best seller of the week was the official Valplast® Chairside Adjustment Kit. Table demonstrations of the product gave visitors the ultimate experience to show the speed and simplicity of the kit. Visitors were also able to gather some goodies including free Val-Clean® samples and samples of the Green Mounted Stone.

Down the hall, at the IDT | ColLABoration booth, Ordervalplast.com and Precise-Fit had giveaway bags, special samples, and table demonstrations of their finishing and polishing instruments and new super-fast techniques.

While at the show, Justin S. Marks, CDT, of Master-Touch Dental Labs, and Apeksha Pole, DMD, gave a compelling presentation about combining digital impressions with RPDs. Valplast Innovations offers services and provides education and consultation on implementation of digital technologies with RPD fabrication.

“It was pretty excellent to be able to talk about other dentists and technicians and describe to them how digital dentistry is moving forward right now and how we were able to collaborate to make many different types of partial dentures using digital impressions” said Dr. Pole.

The lecture consisted of a presentation highlighting the benefits of digital dentistry for the dentist-laboratory communication and workflow, and how the use of this technology gives patients a more enjoyable experience. Both Marks and Dr. Pole expressed how this is the future of dentistry and encouraged those in attendance to research how to use this technology to their advantage. Valplast provides courses and webinars on the use of digital technology in partial and denture fabrication.

“It has made a pretty big impact on both of our businesses.” said Marks.  “Obviously everything that we do in restorative dentistry starts with a good impression. If we can use digital to streamline that and have more accurate results that’s really what we are aiming to do and I think we both accomplished that.”

3D Systems Expands ProJet 1200 Suite

Posted on Monday, December 22, 2014

ROCK HILL, South Carolina – 3D Systems has announced the expansion of its ProJet® 1200 suite with the arrival of five new materials engineered specifically for the desktop printing capabilities of its micro-SLA 3D printer. These five new materials join the previously introduced VisiJet® FTX Green material, expanding the capabilities of jewelers, dental labs, manufacturers, engineers, and 3D artists in the creation of casting patterns, small end-use parts, figurines and presentation models.

ProJet 1200 – Jewelry

Advancing the production capabilities and throughput of jewelry designers, the ProJet 1200 now has an advanced FTX Cast material, a wax/resin hybrid material developed specifically for compatibility with a wide range of jewelry casting methods and materials, and FTX Gold and FTX Silver for stunning jewelry samples and presentation models.

Jewelers can easily integrate FTX Cast, which casts much like traditional wax, into existing workflows with the added benefits of 3D printed parts. Combined with the precision and fantastic surface quality of micro-SLA from the ProJet1200, FTX Cast can be used to create exquisite, detailed pieces from rings to pendants. With glimmering gold and silver particles embedded in the materials, FTX Gold and FTX Silver provide the wow factor that brings customer presentation models and counter samples to life.

ProJet 1200 – Dental

Dental labs use the ProJet 1200 with FTX Green for the production of highly accurate, casting-friendly wax-ups for a range of small dental prosthetics. The ProJet 1200 prints in 30-micron layers at 585 dpi resolution for the production of up to 12 high-quality wax-ups in an hour, right on the desktop. The ProJet 1200 and FTX Green combine for an accelerated workflow with the exceptional results of traditional methods.

ProJet 1200 – Engineering and Manufacturing

Along with the casting capabilities of FTX Cast, engineering and manufacturing customers can take advantage of the arrival of FTX Gray, a high-contrast gray material that’s perfect for prototypes and accentuating fine features, and FTX Clear, a transparent clear material that can be applied in end-use parts and components. As part of the reimagined engineer’s desktop, the ProJet 1200 and FTX Gray and Clear allow engineers a fast way to locally create precise design prototypes of small assembly or components. Micro-SLA parts in FTX Gray and Clear also combine the strength and precision necessary for end-use applications and final one-off custom components, such as electronic connectors, robotics components and more.

ProJet 1200 – 3D Artists and Designers

Many 3D artists, designers and professional model makers also require strong, precise micro parts for toys, figurines, model aircraft, cars, model trains and more. The expanded ProJet 1200 materials selection provides even more opportunity for creative expression. Precision FTX Gray parts are paintable and they accentuate the fine features for which the ProJet 1200 is known. On top of that, beautiful, transparent FTX Clear parts project a hint of iridescence for stunning clear parts, perfect for a range of sculptures and model components. For artisans creating small cast sculptures, FTX Cast provides a less work intensive way to make accurate casting patterns in the workshop.

“The addition of these five materials represents our commitment to revolutionizing desktop 3D printing and bringing new capabilities to dental techs, jewelers, artists and engineers,” said Buddy Byrum, Vice President of Product and Channel Management, 3DS. “Now a jeweler, for instance, can design a ring, prototype it in FTX Gray, print a customer sample ring in FTX Gold and FTX Silver, and create a final casting pattern in FTX Cast—all from the same machine.”

UAB Research Funding Top 10 Among Public Universities

Posted on Tuesday, December 30, 2014

University of Alabama Birmingham’s (UAB) research funding has now reached top ten status among public universities after a 20% fiscal year 2014 increase from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The school received $225 million dollars in FY 2014, up from $188 million in FY 2013.

Some of UAB's professional schools rank in the top ten as well. The School of Dentistry is second among dental schools, and the School of Public health ranks ninth. Other UAB schools are seeing significant funding increases as well. The School of Nursing's funding increased 160%, which has the school close to the top 30 in NIH funding.

“Garnering research support at this level furthers our goal of becoming the preferred academic medical center of the 21st century,” says Selwyn Vickers, MD, senior vice president for Medicine and dean of the School of Medicine at UAB. “This vital funding helps us grow our footprint in the fields of genomics, personalized medicine and other key areas and, in turn, provide unparalleled care to patients throughout our state and region.”

Key areas of funding growth include three newly formed research institutes in genomic medicine, personalized medicine, and information sciences. The school claims construction of a new Genomic Medicine and Data Sciences Building, planned as part of a larger Research and Academic Crescent, could help secure an estimated $48 million in additional NIH funding that could create upward of 580 new jobs and have an economic impact of $100 million on the Birmingham area.
