Balanced Pharma Expands Patent Portfolio for Less Painful Dental Anesthetic

Posted on Thursday, December 21, 2023

Dentist-founded company receives additional U.S. patent for its dental cartridge technology

Balanced Pharma has received notification from the United States Patent & Trademark Office on the issuance of an additional U.S. patent for the dentist-founded company's proprietary cartridge technology. The company believes its new technology will enable dentists to deliver less painful, faster-acting, and more reliable numbing injections using a standard dental cartridge and syringe.

“This patent enhances the value of the Balanced Pharma IP portfolio by adding a third layer of protection around our dental cartridge technology in the U.S. market,” says Balanced Pharma founder and CEO, Dr. Scott Keadle.

Balanced Pharma is a pharmaceutical company headquartered near Charlotte, North Carolina, developing technology to make local anesthetic injections more comfortable for patients and more efficient for healthcare providers. BPI-001, the company’s flagship new drug candidate, is a local anesthetic intended specifically for the dental market and will be supplied in a standard dental cartridge to provide a seamless replacement for existing products, with no new training, equipment, or protocols required. The proposed product’s buffered lidocaine/epinephrine formulation will be free from the acid normally present in local anesthetics.

A large body of research shows that removing the acid from local anesthetics produces faster onset, less injection pain, and increased reliability, including a large, 2023 study1 published in the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery that is especially notable because of the large number of patients and statistical power of the results.

Balanced Pharma’s new drug candidate comes at a time when market research suggests that 9 out of 10 dentists would prefer a better anesthetic, and more than half of patients surveyed said the injection is the worst part of the dental experience.2

“We’re proud to be a company founded by clinicians, working together to improve patient comfort.” adds Dr. Keadle.

Align Technology Receives US FDA 510(k) Clearance for the Invisalign® Palatal Expander System to Address Skeletal and Dental Expansion in Growing Patients

Posted on Tuesday, December 19, 2023

Align Technology, Inc. (“Align”) (Nasdaq: ALGN), a leading global medical device company that designs, manufactures, and sells the Invisalign® System of clear aligners, iTero™ intraoral scanners, and exocad™ CAD/CAM software for digital orthodontics and restorative dentistry, today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared Align’s Invisalign® Palatal Expander System* for commercial availability in the U.S. The FDA 510(k) clearance is for broad patient applicability, including growing children, teens, and adults (with surgery or other techniques).

Previously introduced at the Align Technology Investor Day in September 2023, the Invisalign Palatal Expander System is a modern and innovative direct 3D printed device based on proprietary and patented technology. Invisalign Palatal Expanders are intended for use in rapid expansion and subsequent holding of skeletal and/or dental narrow maxilla (upper jaw) with primary, mixed, or permanent dentition during treatment of patients. The Invisalign Palatal Expander is Align’s first direct 3D printed orthodontic device and provides a safe, comfortable, and clinically effective* alternative to traditional palatal expanders that require manually turning a screw in the device in the mouth daily to achieve expansion.

Speaking at the company’s 2023 Investor Day in Las Vegas, Srini Kaza, Align senior vice president of product research & development said, “I am very proud to unveil the Invisalign Palatal Expander System, our latest innovation in digital orthodontics based on proprietary and patented technology that builds on many industry firsts designed for treatment of children and teens, including Invisalign treatment with Mandibular Advancement and Invisalign First aligners. It is extremely rewarding for our team of engineers and material scientists to produce Align’s first directly fabricated orthodontic appliance and pave the way for future innovation using direct 3D printing technology that enables more sustainable and efficient solutions.”

The Invisalign Palatal Expanders consists of a series of removable devices staged in small increments of movement to expand a patient’s narrow maxilla to a position determined by their treating doctor.** Each direct 3D printed device is customized to the patient’s unique anatomy based on an iTero™ intraoral digital scan. A palatal expansion treatment plan and device design are then developed using Align’s proprietary AI-driven orthodontic software.

Combined with Invisalign First™ aligners, Invisalign Palatal Expanders provide doctors with a full early intervention treatment solution for Phase 1 treatment, an early interceptive orthodontic treatment for young patients. Phase 1 treatment is traditionally done through arch expanders or partial metal braces, before all permanent teeth have erupted – typically at ages 6 through 10. Invisalign First clear aligners are designed specifically to address a broad range of younger patients’ malocclusions, including shorter clinical crowns, management of erupting dentition, and predictable dental arch expansion***.

“The Invisalign® Palatal Expander System worked very well clinically, we had fewer emergencies and less chair time than we did with traditional expanders,” said Dr. Don Spillers, an orthodontist in Warner Robins, Georgia and participant in an Invisalign Palatal Expander clinical trial. “The experience has definitely been much better for my patients with the Invisalign Palatal Expander System, as there was no cementing of bands, no fitting of a metal expander, and no screw to turn. All of the parents were happy and their kids were cooperative.”

“Phase 1 or early interceptive treatment makes up 20 percent of orthodontic case starts each year and is growing,” said Dr. Mitra Derakhshan, Align senior vice president, Global Clinical. “Together with Invisalign First aligners, Invisalign Palatal Expanders provide doctors with a solution set to treat the most common skeletal and dental malocclusions in growing children. The addition of mandibular advancement features to Invisalign aligners also provides doctors with more options for treating skeletal and dental jaw imbalances and bite correction for their growing patients during their teenage years.”

The Invisalign Palatal Expander System is available on a limited basis in Canada and the U.S. It is expected to be available in other markets pending regulatory approvals starting in 2024.

*Based on a survey in August 2023 in Canada of 10 Invisalign trained orthodontists who participated in the Invisalign Palatal Expander System Technical Design Assessment and have treated at least 1 patient age 6-11 years with IPE. Data on file at Align Technology, Inc. as of October 30, 2023.

**Based on data from a multi-site US IDE (Investigational Device Exemption) clinical study (n=29 subjects, ages 7-10 years) of expansion treatment with Invisalign® Palatal Expanders. Data on file at Align Technology, Inc. as of October 30, 2023

BIOLASE Successfully Concludes Waterlase iPlus All Tissue Laser Trial

Posted on Tuesday, December 19, 2023

BIOLASE, Inc. (NASDAQ: BIOL), the global leader in dental lasers, today announced the successful completion of a trial program featuring the Waterlase iPlus All Tissue laser conducted by six leading U.S. dentists. The trial, led by an independent consultant, evaluated both the potential return on investment (ROI) and clinical adoption of BIOLASE's leading technology. The trial revealed unanimous doctor satisfaction with the performance and desire to recommend the purchase to others. This represented the second trial performed by dentists at a dental service organization where all the participants who evaluated the laser also purchased the unit.

"We are very pleased with the results of our trial of the Waterlase iPlus laser," said Dr. Steve Fooshee, Advanced Laser Mentor/Educator Instructor. "The laser is a valuable tool for dentists, and it has been well-received by their patients. We are confident that the laser will help dentists provide even better care to their patients."

The independent consultant and the dentists involved in the trial assessed that this advanced technology allows providers to do procedures they were not previously able to perform. This expanded capability helped keep more patients and the potential revenue associated with those patients within the practice and decreased referrals to specialists. The Waterlase iPlus laser is a versatile tool that can be used for a variety of dental procedures, including tooth extractions, periodontal surgery, and cavity fillings. The laser is also FDA-approved for use in treating periodontal disease. After an evaluation of the potential ROI, all six dentists involved in the trial elected to purchase the laser and stated that they would recommend their colleagues do the same.

"The Waterlase iPlus laser is a significant advancement in dental care," said Dr. Russell Morrow, Chief Dental Officer for BIOLASE. "It is a more precise and less invasive tool than traditional dental instruments, and it can help to reduce pain and bleeding during dental procedures. We are excited to partner with all dentists looking to adopt this advanced technology so they can take care of their patients at a higher standard and have a significant ROI on their capital equipment purchase."

At its corporate headquarters in Melville, New York, Team Schein hosted a “Holiday Cheer for Children” event, where 100 children and their families opened presents while enjoying a fun-filled night with dinner, games, and music. In addition, 300 children received gift cards purchased through support from the Henry Schein Cares Foundation to help alleviate some of the financial burden many individuals face during the holidays.

“We are pleased to celebrate 25 years of fostering holiday joy for families all over the world,” said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein. “‘Holiday Cheer for Children’ is not just an initiative, it is a reflection of Team Schein’s commitment to giving back to the communities in which we live and work. Thank you to all of Team Schein, who throughout the years, has helped keep the spirit of the program alive. We look forward to many more years of Holiday Cheer to come.”

In support of the communities surrounding the Company’s corporate headquarters, Henry Schein partnered with 10 Long Island-based social service organizations to pre-identify participating children and their families, including: Bethany House; Espoir Youth Program, Inc.; Family and Children's Association; Family Service League; Hispanic Counseling Center; Madonna Heights; Nassau County Department of Social Services; The Raymar Children's Fund; WellLife Network; and YES Community Counseling Center.

In the latest episode of #scheinchats, Henry Schein’s signature social media series, Larry Kravitz, Director of Organizational Development at Henry Schein, sat down with Mark Wenzel, Assistant Director at YES Community Counseling Center, to discuss how the program helps make the holiday season enjoyable for communities around the world.

“The ‘Holiday Cheer for Children’ program embodies the true spirit of the holidays – giving, generosity, and kindness,” said Mr. Wenzel. “From the exuberant child whose eyes light up when they receive a gift, to the grateful parent whose anxiety is relieved because they are able to purchase food for a holiday meal, this program has helped make the past 25 years unforgettable for many.”

This year, TSMs from various Company locations participated in the program, helping to brighten the holidays for more than 1,150 individuals in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, and Spain. “Holiday Cheer for Children” takes different forms depending on the location. The inaugural program in the United States served 200 children.

“Seeing the smiles on the faces of our students and witnessing the joy and excitement in the air were priceless moments that will be cherished by both the students and our entire school staff,” said Sinéad Toomey, Principal of Thomond Primary School in Limerick, Ireland. “The holiday season can be particularly challenging for individuals and families facing financial hardships, and Team Schein’s efforts have truly made a difference. It lifted the spirits of individuals most in need and fostered a sense of community.”

“Holiday Cheer for Children” is an initiative of Henry Schein Cares, the company’s global corporate social responsibility program, and is supported by the Henry Schein Cares Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization that advocates and supports efforts to advance health equity and empower health care professionals to promote a healthier tomorrow.
