Henry Schein Announces Release of Dentrix G6

MELVILLE, NY April 30, 2015 -- Henry Schein, Inc. (NASDAQ: HSIC), the world's largest provider of health care products and services to office-based dental, animal health and medical practitioners, announced today the release of Dentrix® G6, the latest version of the award-winning dental practice management software. Dentrix G6 offers customers new features that enhance the user experience and enable practitioners to adopt paperless practices.

To help practices further automate daily tasks, such as scheduling, charting, treatment planning, billing and reporting, Dentrix G6 features upgrades to its financial analytics and accounting and billing tools that will make it easier to manage patient information. In addition, Dentrix G6 offers enhanced functionality to the existing eDex service, which allows easier access to patient information by enabling business and personal contacts to be merged and accessible on a single platform. Dentrix G6 also features a new “click to chat” button in the Help menu so customers can receive real-time answers to their questions from the Dentrix support team.

Another new button on the Dentrix G6 toolbar gives one-click access to the Dentrix Marketplace, an online store that offers products and services that work with Dentrix, including “Dentrix Connected” apps that integrate directly into the Dentrix system to eliminate duplicate data entry and speeds up the practice workflow.

Colgate and ShopRite Celebrate the 2015 Recycled Playground Challenge

TRENTON, NJ, April 27, 2015 – TerraCycle has announced the return of its Recycled Playground Challenge - an initiative in partnership with Colgate-Palmolive (“Colgate”), the global oral care leader, and ShopRite, which has more than 250 stores in the Northeast - to help encourage oral hygiene and sustainability among school children and consumers.

Beginning now through June 13, schools in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Connecticut and Maryland have a chance to win a new playground made completely of recycled material.

To be eligible, the schools must participate in the Oral Care Brigade™, a free recycling program run by Colgate and TerraCycle. Schools will earn one ‘Playground Credit’ for each shipment of empty toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes, and floss containers sent to TerraCycle. Schools can earn additional Playground Credits by voting online at www.terracycle.com/colgateshopriteplayground. Patterson and Sirona Team Up to Distribute CAD/CAM Technologies

High Costs of Dental Care Leave Many with Too Little Money for Basic Necessities

Having to pay for dental health care can put a considerable strain on household finances in many countries, according to an international study led by King's College London.

The new study, published in the journal PLOS ONE, assessed the extent of household 'catastrophic dental health expenditure' (CDHE) in 41 low and middle income countries. Expenditure was defined as catastrophic if it was equal to or higher than 40% of the household's capacity to pay.

Up to 7% of the households surveyed in these countries had incurred catastrophic dental health expenditure in the last month.

The study by King's, UCL and Universiti Teknologi MARA (Malaysia) found that wealthier, urban and larger households and more economically developed countries had higher odds of facing CDHE. In low and middle income countries, the use of dental services is more a function of household's ability to pay than of people's dental needs.

The analysis did not include the indirect costs of seeking dental care, including income loss due to ill health, travel, waiting at clinics or providing care to family members and the results therefore probably underestimate the financial consequences for dental health care on these households.

Dr Eduardo Bernabe, lead author from the Dental Institute at King's College London, said: 'Using dental services can cost households a large proportion of their available income and push many into poverty and long-term debt. Those needing dental treatment face both the direct costs of using the service and indirect loss of income to attend a clinic during working hours.

'Our study highlights the low level of financial protection that healthcare financing systems provides for their citizens. Dental public health advocates and international dental organizations should push for dental care to be included in current discussions about universal health coverage.'

NIH Expands Medical Scholars Program, Announces New Class

The National Institutes of Health has selected 55 talented and diverse students, representing 37 U.S.-accredited universities, for the fourth class of its Medical Research Scholars Program (MRSP), its largest class to date.

A yearlong residential program, the MRSP introduces medical, dental and veterinary students to cutting-edge research, part of NIH's goal of training the next generation of clinician-scientists and biomedical researchers. The program places creative, research-oriented students in NIH laboratories and clinics, including within the NIH Clinical Center, to conduct basic, clinical or translational research in areas that match their career interests and research goals.

A mentored research training experience forms the core of this program and allows these future clinician-scientists and biomedical researchers to carry out research across the full spectrum of science in the interest of improving public health.

"The NIH has a proud history of training clinician-scientists, many of whom have gone on to win the Nobel Prize or to lead major medical research organizations," said Michael Gottesman, M.D., deputy director for intramural research at NIH. "These students will be introduced to incredibly innovative research, among the best in the world, and I know they will be up to the challenge."

The 55 selected participants include 54 medical and one dental student and include 25 females and 13 from underrepresented minority groups.

"Competition for this program is intense, and we have had the good fortune of being able to pick from the very best of the best," said Yvonne Maddox, Ph.D., acting director of NIH’s National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, a major financial supporter of this year’s class. Maddox, a member of the MRSP recruitment team, also stated, "Our new class more closely resembles the diversity that has made the United States a world leader in technology and biomedical research and reflects a concerted recruitment effort to reach out to more segments of the research and academic communities."

In addition to a rigorous research agenda, MRSP scholars participate in courses, journal club seminars, a structured lecture series and clinical teaching rounds. They also present their research to the NIH community and at domestic professional conferences. Each scholar is assigned a tutor/advisor, who provides guidance in defining a well-articulated career development plan and in selecting a dedicated NIH research mentor. Mentors are fulltime NIH investigators with established basic, clinical or translational research programs.

The MRSP is co-sponsored by the NIH and other partners, including the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, American Association for Dental Research, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Colgate-Palmolive Company and other private donors, via contributions to the Foundation for the NIH. ADHA Supports New Community Water Fluoridation Recommendation

Chicago (April 27, 2015) — Earlier today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released the final Public Health Service (PHS) recommendation for the optimal fluoride level in drinking water to prevent tooth decay. The new recommendation is for a single level of 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water. It updates and replaces the previous recommended range (0.7 to 1.2 milligrams per liter), which was issued in 1962. 

Because it is now possible to receive enough fluoride with slightly lower levels of fluoride in water, HHS developed the new PHS recommendation for community water fluoridation. This change will maintain the protective decay prevention benefits of water fluoridation and reduce the occurrence of dental fluorosis. 

“While additional sources of fluoride are more widely used than they were in 1962, the need for community water fluoridation still continues,” said U.S. Deputy Surgeon General Rear Admiral Boris D. Lushniak, MD, MPH. “Community water fluoridation is effective, inexpensive and does not depend on access or availability of professional services.” 

For the past 70 years, communities across the United States have found that fluoride in their public water systems significantly improved their residents’ oral health. Nearly 75 percent of Americans who are served by public water systems receive fluoridated water. The ADHA is a supporter of community water fluoridation — the ADHA’s Policy Manual states that community water fluoridation is a “safe and effective method for reducing the incidence of dental caries.” In addition, the organization also promotes the “education of the public and other health professionals regarding the preventive and therapeutic benefits of fluoride.” 

“As dental hygienists, it’s important that we educate the public on the preventive benefits of community water fluoridation,” said ADHA President Kelli Swanson Jaecks, MA, RDH. “Community water fluoridation serves as an important measure that has been shown to lower the rate of dental caries. It is vital that we continue to utilize water fluoridation to help the public achieve their optimal oral health.”

NIH names Dr. Eliseo Pérez-Stable director of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities

National Institutes of Health Director Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., announced today the selection of Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable, M.D., as Director of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD). Dr. Pérez-Stable is expected to join NIH in September.

As NIMHD director, Dr. Pérez-Stable will oversee the institute’s $270 million budget to conduct and support research, training, research capacity and infrastructure development, public education and information dissemination programs to improve minority health and reduce health disparities. NIMHD is the lead organization at the NIH for planning, reviewing, coordinating and evaluating minority health and health disparities research activities conducted by the NIH institutes and centers.

Dr. Pérez-Stable comes to NIH from the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) where he is a professor of medicine, chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine and director of the Center for Aging in Diverse Communities. The center works to alleviate health disparities with a focus on improving health care for aging minority populations and to diversify the scientific workforce addressing these issues. He is also director of the UCSF Medical Effectiveness Research Center for Diverse Populations, which is addressing issues for African Americans, Asians and Latinos in the areas of cancer, cardiovascular disease and reproductive health. Dr. Pérez-Stable’s personal research interest is in improving the health of poor and minority patients, reducing health risks such as smoking in minority populations and improving cross-cultural communication skills among health care professionals.

Carestream Dental Names New President

ATLANTA — Lisa Ashby has been appointed president of Carestream’s Dental effective May 4. As a member of the executive leadership team, she will lead the company’s global dental organization.

Ashby brings more than 26 years of corporate business expertise acquired during a successful career at Cardinal Health—a $100 billion healthcare products and services provider—where she held positions of increasing responsibility.

Most recently, she was president, medical devices and diagnostics, at Cardinal Health, with responsibility for six companies generating $3 billion in revenue with a product portfolio ranging from laboratory diagnostics to surgical devices and critical care products. She served on Cardinal Health’s operating committee, several company advisory councils, and was active in several industry organizations to help influence legislative policy and create awareness across the global healthcare community.

Prior to this Ashby was president of category management with executive responsibility for key Cardinal Health companies that manufactured and distributed healthcare products around the world. In this role, Ashby increased new product introductions by more than 30 percent. Earlier in her career, she held leadership positions in sales and marketing, channel management and distribution, and operations at Cardinal Health.

Ashby holds a B.A. in public policy/computer science/psychology from Duke University. She is a board member of BioOhio and a past board member of AdvaMedDx, and has served on multiple non-profit organizations benefitting the Ohio community.

Ashby will relocate to Atlanta, Ga., for her role with Carestream Dental.
