The Next Generation of Diagnostic Imaging

High-quality images and customizable software provide a unique experience

Edward Lowe, BSc, DMD

Diagnostic imaging quality, ease-of-use, and time- and cost-savings are key criteria for selecting a digital radiography system. When searching for a new digital diagnostic imaging system, I considered these factors, as well as convenience, efficiency, and technical support. Zuma Dental's® Z-ray® High Performance Digital Radiography System (Figure 1) exceeded my needs and expectations, adding multiple enhancements and customized features to my requirements, as well as a user-friendly Z-image software (Figure 2) interface that integrates seamlessly into my current practice management software. To give my patients the high-quality treatment they deserve, I require a diagnostic imaging system to determine exactly what they need in an efficient manner.

With respect to diagnostic image quality, the Z-image software displays high-resolution images from the Z-ray sensor with great contrast because the images have less noise. Additionally, the 16-bit capture provides the broadest grayscale range to reveal fine details even when zoomed in on a specific region. The Z-image software has state-of-the-art filters that enhance the image with various adjustments like sharpness, contrast, brightness, gamma, and curve adjustments. This lets me see the specifics of a certain anatomic region. There are filters that can be applied in a single click for endodontics, periodontics, general dentistry, and restorative. These filters help me see exactly what I need to see in clinically relevant ways without having to tinker with the manual filters individually.

The user interface for Z-image software is very easy to use because all functions can be executed in three mouse clicks or less. I can choose to view the images side-by-side or as a group with custom templates that I can design for my case presentations. The diagnostic image quality allows us to see more pathology and deliver more treatment. In addition, we spend less time acquiring radiographs. The ability to add custom templates, side-by-side views, and image manipulation makes the Z-image software the choice for my office.

Transitioning to this software was simple. The onboarding experience was almost seamless and posed no risk of disruption of service to the patient. Most practices will hardly even notice the change other than the vastly superior image quality. Database conversion from your existing system is available for most imaging programs on the market, so that made our switch easier as well.

I believe that technical support is incredibly useful when transitioning to any new system in a dental practice. The technical support team for Z-ray is responsive, courteous, and almost always immediately available. They have two levels of support, which include the level 1 and level 2 service technicians. The level 1 technician will be the person who will get your practice live on the system, answering all questions and helping you in the long run. The level 2 service technician is more sophisticated in the areas that deal with information technology. Overall, it is a solid support experience with prompt answers to questions we invariably ask when purchasing a new piece of technology.
