Advocacy For A Digital Oral Health That Leaves No One Behind

Posted on Thursday, July 8, 2021

Alexandria, Va., USA — The health, social and economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have already had a dramatic impact on the prevailing oral health care model and will continue to do so. The paper “Advocacy for a Digital Oral Health That Leaves No One Behind,” published in the JDR Clinical & Translational Research (JDR CTR), promotes the use of digital tools to offer opportunities to improve healthy behavior, lower risk factors common to oral diseases and other noncommunicable diseases and contribute to reducing oral health inequalities.

To mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, systems were quickly put in place in most countries to respond to dental emergencies, giving priority to distance screening, advice to patients by remote means and treatment of urgent cases while ensuring continuous care. Digital health was widely adopted as a central component of this new approach, leading to new practices and tools that, in turn, demonstrated their potential, limitations and possible excesses.

Authors Nicolas Giraudeau, University of Montpellier, France, and Benoit Varenne, World Health Organization (WHO), Oral Health Programme, Geneva, Switzerland, believe that digital tools can accelerate the implementation of universal health coverage and help achieve the World Health Organization 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, leaving no one behind. TheWHO mOralHealth program is structured in four modules (literacy, training, early detection, and surveillance). “Digital oral health should be one of the pillars of oral healthcare post-COVID-19. Universal access to digital oral health should be promoted globally. The WHO’s mOralHealth programme aims to do that.”

“The use of digital health has led to a new way of understanding both general and oral health,” said JDR CTR Editor-in-Chief Jocelyne S. Feine, McGill University, Montréal, Quebec, Canada. “This paper calls for political leaders to be made aware of the universal availability of digital technology and make use of it as a safe and equitable means of delivering oral health care to the public.”

National Cleft Awareness Month: Operation Smile Leads Groundbreaking Research

Posted on Thursday, July 8, 2021

July is National Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness and Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness and improve understanding of orofacial clefts and other conditions of the head and face.

Worldwide, it's estimated every 3 minutes a child is born with a cleft condition which can drastically affect their ability to breathe, eat, and speak. The specific causes of cleft conditions are still unknown, but Operation Smile is committed to learning more about genetic and environmental factors that likely cause cleft in order to help treat more people.

In honor of National Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness and Prevention Month, Operation Smile’s Vice President of Research has offered to share the details of the groundbreaking research the organization is leading to help people with cleft conditions in low- and middle- income countries.

Allyn Auslander, PhD MPH, is the Associate Vice President of Research at Operation Smile. Part of her job entails planning studies, designing data collection tools, analyzing data, and writing scientific manuscripts.

“I believe that data and research is extremely powerful, so everything I do I try to make sure I can see the connection between that work and how it will improve a child’s life,” said Auslander. “Whether that is interpreting outcomes data to improve care, or researching potential environmental risk factors of cleft to prevent disease.”

Auslander’s background in both statistics and epidemiology allow her to pursue her passion for global health, specifically her current work in global surgery.

“There is nothing I enjoy more than traversing the globe meeting and working with other passionate individuals and organizations aimed at creating a global community and improving lives around the world,” said Auslander.

Operation Smile revolutionized cleft surgery globally in 1982. With nearly four decades of experience as one of the largest surgical volunteer-based nonprofits, Operation Smile staff, its private-public partnerships and thousands of volunteers have improved the health and dignity of patients with cleft conditions, helping them to better breathe, eat, speak and live lives of greater quality and confidence.

Operation Smile is leading cleft research through its International Family Study (IFS) with the University of Southern California and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. As of 2020, the IFS team has collected more than 17,000 individual saliva samples representing more than 7,200 families, creating the largest and most diverse genetic repository of cleft samples globally.

“There is a lot of research happening at Operation Smile. There is research around outcomes, barriers to care, health systems strengthening, education and prevention to name a few,”Auslander explained.

Most cleft research to date has focused on people from high-income countries where care is accessible and available. Operation Smile’s research is groundbreaking in that it’s focused on analyzing genetic and environmental factors affecting people that have not been historically included in these types of studies.

“If you look at cleft research, the most commonly cited risk factor is women smoking during pregnancy. However, this is much more relevant in high income countries and smoking rates for women are extremely low in the countries where Operation Smile works,” said Auslander. “That’s why in our study we looked at exposure to smoke from cooking over an open fire, which we found increased the risk of cleft by 50%! If we never studied cleft in low- and middle- income countries, we wouldn’t be able to look at risk factors that don’t exist in high income countries.”

While one cleft surgery can bring immediate transformation to a child’s life in as little as 45 minutes, Operation Smile is committed to providing patients with health that lasts—being there to offer patients additional surgeries, dentistry, psychological services, speech therapy and other essential cleft treatments. Its training and education programs elevate local surgical standards and entire health systems to aid safe surgery and strengthen a global network to reach more people earlier in their lives. You can learn more about its transformative and healing work by visiting operationsmile.org or by following @operationsmile on social media.

America's ToothFairy Smile Drive Program Receives a Boost from Crest and Oral-B

Posted on Tuesday, July 6, 2021

(Charlotte, NC – July 6, 2021) Although they’re preventable, cavities are the leading chronic childhood disease in America. Unfortunately, many low-income families lack basic dental hygiene products in their homes. When kids can’t brush every day to keep their smiles healthy, the pain of tooth decay can keep them from eating, sleeping, and attending school. Their poor oral hygiene habits contribute to the vicious cycle of poverty.

Every child should have what they need to prevent tooth decay. That’s why America’s ToothFairy has teamed up with Crest and Oral-B to help kids in underprivileged communities access the hygiene products they need to keep their smiles healthy. Through their Smile Drive program, America’s ToothFairy helps kids protect their teeth from cavities by mobilizing volunteers to collect oral care products for families in need and teach their communities about the importance of healthy dental hygiene habits. Crest and Oral-B are this year’s sponsors of the Smile Drive program, which has distributed more than two million oral care products to families in need since 2014.

“It breaks my heart every time a child tells me they don’t have a toothbrush at home,” America’s ToothFairy Executive Director, Jill Malmgren remarked. “Throughout this challenging year, Crest and Oral-B have generously provided financial contributions in addition to 40,000 toothbrushes and toothpaste to our nonprofit dental partners that serve our nation’s disadvantaged kids. We are exceedingly grateful for their support and are thrilled to partner with them to help grow our Smile Drive program this year.”

To kick-off the partnership, this spring the organizations encouraged families to Conquer Cavities 2Gether by pledging to brush for two minutes, two times a day with fluoride toothpaste. For every pledge received, Crest and Oral-B donated a Conquer Cavities 2Gether kit for a child in need through America’s ToothFairy. By the end of the campaign, kits containing Crest toothpaste, Oral-B toothbrushes, two-minute timers, and educational materials were distributed to 10,000 kids across the country.

EMS Dental and Coastal Carolina Community College Team Up to Train the Next Generation of Biofilm Warriors

Posted on Tuesday, July 6, 2021

Nyon, Switzerland – July 2, 2021 – EMS Dental, the inventor and manufacturer of the synergistic components of the Guided Biofilm Therapy protocol (GBT®) recently installed seven AIRFLOW® Prophylaxis Master units at Coastal Carolina Community College in Onslow County, North Carolina. In addition, EMS has provided extensive “train the Trainers’ support of the college’s hygiene school faculty.

“Coastal Carolina’s investment in AIRFLOW® technology and adoption of the GBT protocol is a testament to its commitment to providing the highest level of hygiene education,” said Mehdi Sbouaï, EMS Dental’s Head of Business Development & Product Management. “This forward-thinking institution is ensuring that its RDH graduates can improve the quality of oral care and overall health of their patients.”

Specifically, GBT includes critical elements of the traditional dental hygiene process of care such as assessment, disclosing and patient-motivation. Too often in the real world, these elements get left out because of time constraints. The GBT approach allows critical debridement techniques to be performed quickly, comfortably, and efficiently, making it possible to bring all the critical elements of care back to the operatory.

According to Warren F, Gabarée, DDS, Coastal Carolina Community College’s Department Head of

Dental Programs, “I consider GBT to be the ground-breaking protocol and technology that will enable

us to graduate an elite group of hygienists who are highly qualified to use this modern biofilm management modality and also become advocates for its broader adoption.”

The AIRFLOW Prophylaxis Master device applies EMS’ super fine Erythritol AIRFLOW® PLUS powder via the AIRFLOW® MAX handpiece to thoroughly remove biofilm in the sulcus area and shallow pockets up to 4 mm, on the tongue and gingiva, as well as on the palate. When used with EMS-Dental’s Guided

Biofilm Therapy Protocol, AIRFLOW safely and comfortably removes biofilm, stains and young calculus deposits on natural teeth, restorations, and implants.

“As a clinical hygienist and educator, I believe GBT has the ability to impact the future of dental hygiene and have a positive impact on the patients we see not only for their oral health but their systemic health as well,” explained Erika Spring, RDH, BSDH, MEd, a full-time hygiene instructor at the college.

Gabarée and Spring say fewer patients are requiring local anesthesia for periodontal treatment and that their patients are more comfortable and relaxed. The deployment of seven AIRFLOW PROPHYLAXIS MASTER units is just the beginning of the EMS-Dental / Carolina Coastal Community College partnership, as the school continues to train more faculty and thereby treat more patients.

For more information of Guided Biofilm Therapy and the AIRFLOW Prophylaxis Master, visit www.ems-dental.com. To schedule a demo or training, contact Debra Zafiropoulos at dzafiropoulos@ems-na.com.

Ivoclar Vivadent Introduces a New Programat Generation of Dental Furnaces Enhanced with Smart Features

Posted on Friday, July 2, 2021

Ivoclar Vivadent is a global market leader at the forefront of continuous innovations in the field of dental furnaces. Now, this 40-year success story continues with the launch of the second generation of Programat furnaces, outfitted with the next level of modern, intuitive, and smart furnace features and design.

Ivoclar Vivadent is one of the world’s leading suppliers of integrated solutions for high-quality dental applications, offering a comprehensive range of products and systems for dentists and dental technicians. With the launch of the next generation of Programat ceramic and press furnaces, the company once again demonstrates its innovative strength. In addition to well-designed solutions that optimize proven features, such as the infrared technology (IRT), fully automated press function (FPF), and digital shade assistant (DSA), new software enhancements and smart features have been added to the Programat line of furnaces to make everyday work in the dental laboratory more efficient.

Modern, intuitive, smart: new Programat series impresses with a host of refinements

The new generation of Programat press and ceramic furnaces feature a modernized design and more comfort in the day-to-day work of dental laboratories than ever before. The high-tech design concept and color of the new Programat furnaces will blend harmoniously into today’s modern laboratory surroundings. New features include a redesigned cooling tray, optimized to provide more space and better cooling of marginal areas. A new membrane-sealed keypad and customary color touchscreen display ensure fast and easy operation of the furnace. The graphical user interface (GUI) has been adapted and enhanced to match the preferences of customers to ensure even greater ease-of-use in everyday applications. New symbols and clear icons enable straightforward and intuitive operation, facilitating the handling of the furnace and increasing the efficiency of the work process.

Designed to do more than “just” fire: Programat with IoT connectivity

Designed to do more than press and fire, the second generation Programat series functions as a smart dental assistant for dental technicians. Due to their loT connectivity (Internet of Things), the new Programat furnaces offer additional benefits. Users can register their device on the Ivoclar Vivadent customer portal and subscribe to a free “report” to receive monthly usage summary information on their furnace. This allows users to optimize such critical functions as uptime and operation of the furnace in the dental laboratory. In addition, the report provides information on potential sources of error and facilitates maintenance and repair operations, enhancing the process reliability of the furnace in the laboratory.

Variants of the new Programat series

The Programat ceramic furnaces are smart specialists for high-quality firing results and will be available in three versions: P710 G2, P510 G2 and P310 G2. The Programat press furnaces are reliable partners for smart pressing operations and will be offered in two versions: EP 5010 G2 and EP 3010 G2.
