Implant dentistry enters new era with launch of Nobel Biocare Xeal™ and TiUltra™ surfaces in the United States

Posted on Tuesday, January 12, 2021

Nobel Biocare invites dental professionals to join the Mucointegration™ era with the launch of the Xeal and TiUltra surfaces in the United States. These new surfaces are applied to implants and abutments, which optimizes tissue integration at every level.

New Xeal abutments feature next-generation surface chemistry designed to promote soft-tissue attachment. In a clinical study with a two-year follow-up, the Xeal surface demonstrated a significant increase in soft-tissue height compared to machined abutment surfaces. After its wide success and adoption in Europe, dental professionals in the United States will now be able to see and experience the pioneering Mucointegration™ surface as it is made available for Nobel Biocare’s On1™ Base and Multi-unit Abutment.

The TiUltra surface promotes early osseointegration. The surface was developed to further promote early osseointegration and support bone stability. With an ultra-hydrophilic, multi-zoned implant surface, the TiUltra surface is taking anodization technology one step further. Roughness, porosity, and surface chemistry are important factors for tissue integration. Surface chemistry, in particular, plays a vital role in enhancing cellular attachment.

The TiUltra surface is now available through Nobel Biocare’s NobelActive®, NobelParallel™ Conical Connection, and NobelReplace® Conical Connection implants. When combined with the Xeal abutment surface, dental professionals will have a complete solution for tissue integration.

”Dental professionals are now able to experience the Xeal and TiUltra surfaces in their practice and discover how important the soft-tissue barrier becomes in protecting the underlying bone. It is this feature that promotes the basis for long-term tissue health and stability, which will not only be appreciated by the clinician, but by the patient as well.” said Patrik Eriksson, Nobel Biocare’s President.

Nobel Biocare is a world leader in the field of innovative implant-based dental restorations. The company’s portfolio offers solutions from single tooth to fully edentulous indications with dental implant systems (including key brands NobelActive® and NobelParallel™), a comprehensive range of high-precision individualized prosthetics and CAD/CAM systems (NobelProcera®), digital solutions for treatment planning (DTX Studio™ suite) and guided surgery, as well as biomaterials (creos™ regenerative solutions). Nobel Biocare supports its customers through all phases of professional development, offering world-class training and education along with practice support and patient information materials.

Polaroid HealthCare introduces new Polaroid P31 Caries Detector

Posted on Monday, January 11, 2021

3-In-1 Combo Fluorescence Caries Detector, Transilluminator, IO camera, all in one device!

The just released Polaroid P31 is the first Full HD 1920 X 1080P Caries Detection device that allows the user to display all 3 methods of visible caries detection at once with just one press of the capture button. Each detection mode has its advantages, as well as limits and may not be perfect for every situation. The P31 solves this by capturing a White light (natural color) image, a Fluorescence Image, and a Transilumination image at the same time and positions them side by side so that you can compare them and gather the most information to help you make a more informed decision regarding the needed treatment plan. The three side by side images are also great for educating your patient, as well as submitting to the insurance companies.

The P31 is shaped like a highspeed handpiece. Its lightweight 2.2oz metal body is comfortable to hold, as well as being very durable. The P31 is packed with innovative and user friendly modern features such as: Dual Fluorescence Modes, choose to view healthy teeth in either a green color, or natural tooth color, while carious bacteria biofilm glows red for easy identification of problem areas. The new Polaroid P31’s Liquid lens optics with autofocus, can go from a macro close-up, out to infinity with just a single press of the capture button, similar to today’s Smart phones. A built-in Gyro Air mouse, saves then user wasted time and motion reaching for a mouse and possibly breaking contamination protocols. Adjust the color output to your display as cool, natural, or warm to maximize what color shades you see. Black and White mode, and more.

The slim, retraction style head has 30 unique LEDs that surround the lens to help prevent shadows as sometimes seen with other products. 8 White LEDs are used for IO camera viewing, 8 UV LEDs are used to cause carious biofilm to fluoresce red, and 14 IR LEDs, similar to Night Vision devices, create a high transparency light source that allows the user to examine the inside of enamel, without ionizing X-ray use. This can be helpful when examining cancer patients, children, pregnant women, and those looking to avoid X-ray ionization. The P31 is also ideal for those practices looking for a more holistic approach by taking as few X-rays as is necessary.

‘You Can’t Beat the CS 9600:’ 1,000th System Installed

Posted on Monday, January 11, 2021

One million acquisitions, more than 500,000 patients, four awards and one Scan Ceph module enhancement later, the CS 9600 CBCT has reached another exciting milestone: 1,000 systems installed. This newest landmark is a testament to Carestream Dental’s premier five-in-one imaging system’s innovation, ease-of-use and life-changing power.

What makes the system so popular is its ability to be used for almost all clinical procedures from implants to guided surgery to orthodontic procedures. Advanced integration with dental software and third-party solutions solidifies the CS 9600 as the foundation for true end-to-end specialty workflows.

“Carestream Dental’s strength has always been its ability to take data and put it to work for clinicians,” Dr. Ed Shellard, chief dental officer, Carestream Dental, said. “In the CS 9600 we see software algorithms, smart technology and artificial intelligence (AI) combine to transform the way doctors diagnose, treat and care for patients from the first scan through treatment and follow-up.”

The system, launched in 2018, is the culmination of years of research and customer input. The design process thoughtfully considered the experience that each end user would have when encountering the CS 9600: Clinical experience, staff/assistant experience, practice owner experience and patient experience.

For Clinicians

Advanced features like 120 kV imaging for increasing image quality; 14 fields of view, ranging from 4cm x 4cm to 16 cm x 17cm, to cover the needs of nearly any procedure; and Live Positioning Assistant all deliver enhanced imaging. Algorithms that reduce metal artifacts—CS MAR—improve images even more so doctors can make more confident diagnoses.

“The 120 kV imaging and CS MAR feature continue to impress me,” Dr. Matthew Nichols, D.D.S., Oral & Facial Surgery, Manchester, Tenn., said. “All in all, I would say that you can’t beat the CS 9600.”

To capture sharper images in a reproducible way, image processing software deliver ultra-sharp images. When acquiring a panoramic image, Tomosharp technology recognizes the area where the anatomy is the sharpest and reconstructs the best possible panoramic image automatically. These sharper, well-positioned images enable better diagnostics.

For Staff/Assistants

Patient positioning powered by AI automatically detects and traces the Frankfort plane to achieve proper positioning effortlessly and to reduce one of the most common positioning mistakes. When combined with video camera assistance and face-to-face positioning, this unique technology dramatically facilitates patient alignment, increases exam precision and reduces risk of retakes.

“With the addition of smart features, such as the ‘live positioning assistant’ cameras, it’s quite simple for my staff to easily and efficiently position the patient in order to get precisely the image we need,” Dr. Nichols said.

For Practice Owners

For practice owners looking to expand the services their offices offer, the CS 9600 was designed to be scalable. In 2020, a Scan Ceph module was launched, allowing users to add an orthodontic feature to the system and do more for their patients. Once a cephalometric image is captured, Carestream Dental’s industry-leading auto-tracing feature can save doctors valuable time by automatically recognizing anatomical structures and tracing them in just a few seconds—as opposed to the five to 10 minutes other orthodontic software takes. Ultimately, doctors gain back time that could be used for more in-depth diagnosis or personalized patient interaction.

For Patients

Patients benefit the most from the enhanced care the CS 9600 enables their doctor to provide, but of course there are other little details that keep patient comfort in mind. For example, an integrated seat and a jewelry tray make it easy for patients to prepare themselves for imaging.

The CS 9600 is also the first of Carestream Dental’s systems to feature CS UpStream, which turns the system into a connected device. Data from the machine is constantly being monitored and sent back to Carestream Dental. Should there ever be an issue with the system, technicians can review the CS 9600’s historical performance and find solutions sooner.

Not only do doctors, staff and patients all rave about the CS 9600, the system comes highly recommended by the oral healthcare industry. It’s been awarded a 2019 and 2020 Cellerant Best of Class Technology Award, a Bronze Edison Award and the Krakdent Medal of the Highest Quality.

To learn more about the CS 9600, visit carestreamdental.com/cs9600. Clinicians can also configure their own CS 9600 to meet their practices’ unique needs at caretreamdental.com/9600Config.

Artificial Intelligence Technology Powers Award-Winning Clinical Research in Dentistry

Posted on Friday, January 8, 2021

Dentists can expect to be better than ever before in catching undiagnosed or overlooked conditions and identifying pathologies thanks to Denti.AI’s radiographic analysis, new clinical research shows.

The American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology awarded the prestigious 2020 Albert G. Richards Graduate Student Research Award to a University of North Carolina Adams School of Dentistry graduate student who showed the artificial intelligence software often accurately identified pathoses missed by board-certified dental experts.

Manal Hamdan, DDS, conducted the study titled “Detecting Apical Radiolucencies Using Deep Learning Technology: A Pilot Study.” She concluded that Denti.AI’s technology had comparable or improved results, and the artificial intelligence tool has the potential to reduce provider fatigue and diagnostic errors. Her poster on the same research won first prize for the best scientific poster at the AAOMR annual session.

Dr. Don Tyndall, Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at the Adams School of Dentistry stated, “Dr. Hamdan’s research is an excellent example of university and business collaboration utilizing experts in radiology, deep learning and statistical analysis to produce clinically relevant and potentially game changing results validating software that can elevate patient care.”

“Our team at Denti.AI is committed to being at the forefront of implementing artificial intelligence into clinical practices through rigorous academic validation and collaboration with leading academic institutions,” said Dmitry Tuzoff, founder and CEO of Denti.AI.

This is the second academic award the company’s product has received this year. The University of Louisville awarded first prize to a separate clinical study featuring Denti.AI’s technology.

“We are building technology to help support oral health providers by bringing clarity, standardization, quality assurance, efficiency, and trust to the dental marketplace,” said Eric Pulver, DDS, the Chief Dental Officer of Denti.AI.

With Denti.AI’s radiograph analysis, providers will catch more pathologies and help patients better understand the need for treatment to increase both quality of care and case acceptance. Denti.AI’s cloud-based software centralizes the clinical data into its analytics platform, which makes it easy to see business performance in relation to hard clinical data. Plus, its patent-pending auto-charting technology incorporates the radiographs directly into the clinical workflow which improves operational efficiency.

Thanks to the AI-powered medical imaging technology, dental practices gain profitability, speed and quality. With Denti.AI, it only takes several seconds to interpret a series of intraoral x-rays or a panoramic image and produce a complete dental chart. Based on the experience of professional radiologists who participated in the training of the algorithms, Denti.AI looks to find what the naked eye often cannot. You can see for yourself at Denti.AI.

Denti.AI (https://www.denti.ai) is a software company that leverages AI analysis of dental x-rays to detect key abnormalities, past dental treatments, and other relevant features to find problems earlier and improve productivity. Its cloud-based service is integrated with a range of practice management software and imaging equipment, automating the clinical workflow of dental support organizations across North America.
