Posted on Tuesday, April 5, 2016

5 April 2016 –Kerr Endodontics, a global leader in endodontic equipment and consumables, is proud to announce its intention to pledge $75,000 to the American Association of Endodontists Foundation at its annual meeting, April 6-9, 2016, at the Moscone Center West in San Francisco. This gift underscores the brand’s ongoing commitment to the association and its work in guiding this vibrant field of work. Almost exactly a year ago, Kerr Dental announced that Kerr, Kerr TotalCare and Axis|SybronEndo would reorganize into a unilateral organization designed to be more collectively meaningful and distinctive in its service to customers. As an outward display of this internal shift, the companies rebranded to create four core identities: Kerr Endodontics, Kerr Restoratives, Kerr Rotary and Kerr TotalCare.

Twelve months into the mission to be not only more operationally efficient, but more powerfully and distinctively positioned for the benefit of the dental professional, Kerr Endodontics and the rest of the Kerr family are continuously strivingto be the most patient-centric, dental practice focused company in the industry; where everyone in the organization considers the impact of their interactions on the customer experience every day.

“We at Kerr want to raise the bar of expectation and put a stake in the ground that says we have more to offer than just products, more to achieve than others think possible and more to learn from our customers than others think practicable,” McDonald added. “The best days of this business have yet to be seen, and we want to meet dental professionals at their best.”

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

Posted on Friday, April 1, 2016

ROSEMONT, Ill., April 1, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Every hour, 24-hours-a-day, 365-days-a-year, someone dies of oral or oropharyngeal cancer (cancer of the mouth and upper throat). Yet, if oral cancer is detected and treated early, treatment-related health problems are reduced and survival rates may increase.

This year an estimated 48,2501 new cases of oral cancer will be diagnosed. Of those individuals, 40 percent will not survive longer than five years, and many who do survive suffer long-term problems, such as difficulties with eating and speaking or facial disfigurement. The death rate associated with oral and oropharyngeal cancers remains particularly high because the cancers routinely are discovered late in their development.

This April, the nation observes the 17th Annual Oral Cancer Awareness Month and the American Academy of Oral Medicine, American Academy of Periodontology, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Dental Association, and the American Dental Hygienists' Association join the Oral Cancer Foundation in its campaign to raise awareness of oral cancer screenings and the importance of early detection.

Regular oral cancer examinations performed by your oral health professional remain the best method for detecting oral cancer in its early stages.

Be mindful of symptoms

In between dental visits, the public is encouraged to regularly check for signs and symptoms, and see a dental professional if they do not improve or disappear after two-three weeks:

  • a sore, or soreness or irritation that doesn't go away

  • red or white patches, or pain, tenderness, or numbness in mouth or lips

  • lumps, thickening tissues, rough spots, crusty or eroded areas

  • difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking or moving your jaw or tongue

  • a change in the way your teeth fit together when you close your mouth

HPV-caused oropharyngeal cancer may present with one or more of the following persistent (longer than two-three weeks) signs and symptoms:

  • a painless lump or swelling felt in the neck

  • sore throat, difficulty swallowing, or pain when swallowing

  • swelling of the tonsillar areas at the back of the mouth

Always call your dentist right away if there are any immediate concerns.

Risk Factors

Research has identified a number of factors that may contribute to the development of oral and oropharyngeal cancers. Historically, those at an especially high risk of developing oral cancer have been heavy drinkers and smokers older than age 50, but today the cancer also is occurring more frequently in younger, nonsmoking people due to HPV, the virus most commonly associated with cervical cancer.

The sexually transmitted human papillomavirus 16 (HPV) is related to the increasing incidence of oropharyngeal cancer (most commonly involving lymphoid tissue occurring in the tonsils or the base of the tongue) in a younger, non-smoking population composed of males four to one over females.

If you have never had an oral cancer examination, there is no better time to schedule one than during Oral Cancer Awareness Month in April. When you do, be sure to ask that this examination be made a routine part of all of your future dental check-ups. Five Health Organizations Double Down on Mouth Guards

Posted on Friday, April 1, 2016

Rosemont, Ill. – April is National Facial Protection Month and this year five of the nation’s top dental associations are reminding athletes and recreational sports players to wear mouth guards to protect their teeth. Mouth guards are an essential piece of athletic gear and can help prevent serious, painful facial injuries that affect the mouth and teeth.

The dental experts at the Academy for Sports Dentistry (ASD), American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), and the American Dental Association (ADA) urge parents, caregivers, athletes and coaches to be proactive about staying safe by using a mouth guard. They offer the following important statistics to keep in mind as spring sports season begins:

3 – Types of mouth guards: Custom-fitted mouth guards are made by your dentist for you personally. Stock mouth guards come pre-formed and may offer a bulky fit. Boil and bite mouth guards are softened in boiling water and then inserted and allowed to adapt to the shape of your mouth.

5 – The number of top dental associations that encourage athletes and recreational sports players to wear mouth guards to keep their teeth and smiles intact.

7 to 11 – The ages during which children are most vulnerable to sports-related mouth injuries.

60 – The number of times that athletes are more likely to suffer harm to the teeth if they’re not wearing a mouth guard.

All – How many sports during which you should wear a mouth guard. Collision and contact sports may be high-risk for the mouth, but you can still experience a dental injury from other sports such as gymnastics or skating.
