Nanova Biomaterials Inc. Begins Manufacturing Fluoride Dental Varnish

Posted on Monday, November 3, 2014

COLUMBIA, MO.— Nanova Biomaterials Inc., a company that grew out of research conducted at the University of Missouri, is manufacturing its first product from a plant in Columbia. The company began manufacturing a fluoride dental varnish called StarBright about a month ago after the product received approval from the Food and Drug Administration. It held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday at its $1.5 million plant in Columbia.

Hao Li, Nanova co-founder of the company and Missouri associate engineering professor, said the company hopes to have the dental varnish on the market in December.

"Getting FDA clearance is very time-consuming, so we are pretty proud" we got "everything done in a year," Li said. "That's pretty fast, I think."

Nanova was in founded in 2007 and Nanova Biomaterials was created in 2013. It uses nanotechnology to produce particles with new properties. For example, the dental varnish contains more fluoride than other products on the market, The Columbia Daily Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1u0Q4rd ).

The company currently employs 13 people other than two university researchers who are company founders. It hopes to double its workforce by 2016 and create up to 50 jobs in the next five years.

Nanova also is working on a filling material for dental cavities that Li expects will receive FDA approval by next summer or fall.

The company has received $50,000 through the Development Tax Credit Program and it has been approved $11,500 through the Missouri Works Training Program. Nanova also has been authorized to receive $564,000 in benefits through the Missouri Quality Jobs program but it has not yet received those benefits.

Li, a native of China, has attracted investors from that country. The Chinese venture capital firm SummitView Capital has announced plans to invest $7 million in the company and the Chinese government also approved an $8 million loan package that Nanova could use to finance its growth, Li said.

Research: Physician-Dentist Collaboration Recommended in Diabetes Care

Posted on Monday, November 3, 2014

Oct. 31, 2014 (HealthDay News) — Dentists are uniquely placed to identify patients with diabetes and those with diabetes who are at risk for complications, according to an article published in the October issue of Clinical Diabetes.

Satheesh Elangovan, BDS, ScD, DMSc, from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in Iowa City, and colleagues discuss the interrelationships between diabetes and dental conditions, providing insights for both dental and medical professionals.

The researchers note that more older people visit a dentist than a primary care physician (in 2011, about 58% of those aged ≥ 65 years visited a dentist versus 38% who visited a primary care doctor). Diabetes has several oral manifestations and dentists can potentially identify patients with diabetes who are at risk. Patients could be placed on a recall program as a preventive measure, providing an opportunity for monitoring. Periodontal examinations can also be used to identify people with diabetes, with 92% accuracy seen in one study involving 506 dental patients. Dentists should also be trained to recognize patients at high risk for diabetes. Dentists and their auxiliary staff can also provide guidance for patients and help them attain glycemic control.

“With the projected rise in chronic diseases, including diabetes, and the growing shortage of primary care physicians, it is ever more important for dental and medical healthcare providers to work together closely to tackle this public health crisis,” the authors write.

Recently, the SaliMark OSCC test underwent a PRoBE (prospective-specimen-collection, retrospective-blinded-evaluation) design study which is the most rigorous biomarker validation available. In addition, PeriRx successfully completed a validation of the mRNA markers at the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and the St. Johns Providence Health System in Detroit.

New 3Shape Orthodontics Advisory Board Focuses on Patient and Market Needs

Posted on Monday, November 24, 2014

Copenhagen, Nov. 19th, 2014 - 3Shape, a leading global innovator of digital 3D solutions for dental and orthodontic clinics and labs, has brought together five leading orthodontists from around the world to form the first 3Shape Orthodontics Advisory Board.

The Orthodontics Advisory Board will work together with 3Shape to improve patient care and help the company better support orthodontia needs.

The Orthodontics Advisory Board created a four-point plan to achieve goals.

  1. Provide 3Shape with feedback on present digital technologies

  2. Recommend actionable steps to improve patient care, existing workflows and solutions

  3. Identify unmet needs in the orthodontic market

  4. Share best practices within the orthodontic community

"Perhaps no other branch in dental care benefits more from digital technology than orthodontics. 3Shape solutions enable orthodontists and labs to digitally plan, simulate, manage and even build orthodontic appliances as well as store and exchange patient dental impressions. This is a radical leap for many in the industry. The advisory board allows us to work closer with the sector’s key opinion leaders. Their insight is essential in achieving our goal of improving patient care, and in many ways, defining the future of digital orthodontics,” says Flemming Thorup, CEO for 3Shape.

“The advantages of intraoral scanning in orthodontic clinics are so powerful with the model storage savings, communication, reduced chair time, and efficient treatment planning software tools – that success in the market will soon be defined by those who have adapted to the technology,” says Dr. Carlo Marassi, 3Shape Orthodontics Advisory Board Member

3Shape orthodontic solutions enable orthodontists and orthodontic labs to plan, manage patient care as well as drive hands-free manufacturing of orthodontic appliances using CAM equipment. In addition, digital solutions enable orthodontists and labs to do away with gypsum models, which eliminates the need for storage space and reduces environmental impact. The TRIOS® digital impression solution provides easy full-bite impression taking, digital accuracy of occlusion, and increased patient satisfaction.

The five members of the 3Shape Orthodontics Advisory Board are all respected leaders in orthodontics and recognized digital experts. They each bring a unique insight into the strategies and procedures they practice in patient care. The board members are Dr. Lars Christensen (UK), Dr. Carlo Marassi (Brazil), Dr. Santiago Isaza Penco (Italy), Dr. Jean-Marc Retrouvey (Canada) and Dr. Alain Souchet (France).

Southland Benefit Solutions is the First Carrier to Announce Coverage for D5994

Posted on Monday, November 24, 2014

Tuscaloosa, Ala., -- Nov. 18, 2014 -- Southland Benefit Solutions announces coverage, effectively immediately, for a periodontal medicament carrier, an innovative tool used to deliver medication below the gums. Southland is the first carrier to announce the coverage decision in a move to position the company as a benefits leader. This decision signals the company’s commitment to provide comprehensive solutions for treatment and wellness.

A periodontal medicament carrier, best known as a Perio Tray® (Perio Protect, St. Louis, MO), places medication deep into periodontal pockets, the space between teeth and gums that can harbor bacteria. In healthy gum tissue the pocket is 1-3 mm deep. When the pocket becomes infected, the space can exceed 3mm, depths almost impossible to clean with toothbrush, rinses or floss.

Signs of infection and gum disease include bleeding or inflamed gums, tenderness, swelling, foul odors and longer appearing teeth. Gum disease is prevalent in the US. The Center for Disease Control estimates that 47% of Americans have periodontitis. Millions more have gingivitis. The seriousness of the numbers are compounded by the associations between gum disease and systemic diseases like cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes.

Perio Trays® are proven to deliver medication to fight infections. They have an internal peripheral seal fabricated to place medication deep into pockets. Patients can only obtain a prescription Perio Tray through a licensed dentist who will develop and monitor a comprehensive treatment plan according to individual patient conditions.

Southland expects that research, showing improvements in pocket depths and bleeding conditions with Perio Tray delivery, will translate into both better treatment outcomes for patients and a reduction in long-term health costs. In a July 2014 survey of dentists with extensive experience prescribing Perio Trays, conducted by Perio Protect and Actuarial Worksite Marketing, surgical costs were reduced by 43%, extractions were reduced by 35%, repetitive procedures to clean teeth below the gums were reduced by 32%, and patient satisfaction was 100%.

Within the competitive marketplace of dental insurance, Southland competes by identifying effective new technology that improves patient health and decreases costs and by putting beneficiaries first. For additional information on Southland Benefit Solutions visit www.southlandbenefit.com. Perio Tray® information is available at www.perioprotect.com

DTA Foundation Grant Funds Resources For Pharmicists To Assist Older Adults

Posted on Thursday, November 20, 2014

CHICAGO, November 17 — To address the crisis currently facing older Americans relative to their oral health, the Dental Trade Alliance Foundation (DTA Foundation) recently awarded Oral Health America (OHA) a $25,000 grant to create an oral health information system for pharmacists to better prepare them to answer the questions seniors have regarding oral health. Since 70% of older adults do not have dental insurance, their access to a dentist may be limited, but they may interact with pharmacists on a regular basis, making pharmacists an ideal oral health resource.

The DTA Foundation grant recognizes that oral health impacts overall health, and that there is an unmet need in reaching older adult consumers. The grant funds the creation of an oral health curriculum for pharmacists that will be test marketed through a regional professional development summit. It also provides funding for the creation of an online toolkit with educational information designed to assist pharmacists with providing information about oral health-related topics of interest to older adults. Additionally, the grant will enable the creation of plain language materials that pharmacists can have readily available at the pharmacy counter to answer the questions most frequently asked by older adults.

“The DTA Foundation grant offers OHA the opportunity to pilot an idea that capitalizes on the need to engage an inter-professional workforce in meeting the oral health needs of older Americans,” said OHA President and CEO Beth Truett. “Pharmacists are an ideal resource because they come in contact with older adults in natural community settings. We are grateful for this generous grant from the DTA Foundation which allows OHA to engage this important group of health professionals in educating older adult consumers.”

“The DTA Foundation remains committed to creating access to oral healthcare and sees this new opportunity with Oral Health America and pharmacists as a responsible way to leverage our resources to promote real change,” said Scott Parrish, DTA Foundation Chair and President of A-dec.OHA focuses on older adults through the Wisdom Tooth Project®, a program that connects older adults and caregivers to resources where they live and educates them about the importance of oral health. To learn more about OHA’s work for older adults, please visit www.oralhealthamerica.org and to access resources for older adults and their caregivers, please visit www.toothwisdom.org.

OHA's mission is to change lives by connecting communities with resources to drive access to care, increase health literacy and advocate for policies that improve overall health through better oral health for all Americans, especially those most vulnerable. Through Smiles Across America®, which serves 440,000 children annually, the Wisdom Tooth Project®, which reaches tens of thousands of older adults, and the Campaigns for Oral Health Equity, which prioritize oral health alongside other chronic diseases, OHA helps Americans of all ages to have a healthy mouth and to understand the importance of oral health for overall health.
