Report: Dental Abuse Driven by Private Equity Investment

A 4-year-old Arizona boy returned home from school one day last October in pain with steel crowns on two of his back teeth. He had received two pulpotomies along with 10 x-rays while at school—without his parents’ consent. Isaac Gagnon’s case and others like it are under scrutiny by federal lawmakers and state regulators trying to determine whether a popular business model fueled by Wall Street money is soaking taxpayers and having a malign influence on dentistry. At the heart of the alleged rash of “dental abuse” on poor children are unnecessary procedures, low-quality treatment, and the unlicensed practice of dentistry.
