OSAP Names Board of Directors for 2013-2014

ANNAPOLIS, MD—JULY 9, 2013—The Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP) has elected Tim Lorencovitz MBA to lead its board of directors for the 2013-14 year. Joining Lorencovitz on the executive committee are John O’Keefe BDentSc MDentSc MBA, Kathy Eklund RDH MHP, Mike Smurr and Leslie Grant DDS MSPA. The board also welcomes two new directors, Karen Gregory RN and Sheila Strock DMD MPH.

“Tim and our current board continue to be a reflection of OSAP’s unique community of members representing all areas of oral healthcare including educators, clinicians, consultants, policy makers and the dental trade,” said Therese Long MBA CAE, OSAP executive director. “I look forward to working with this committed group of leaders to advance OSAP’s global mission for the safe and infection-free delivery of oral healthcare.”

Tim Lorencovitz MBA will serve as OSAP’s chairman.  He is the marketing manager for the Sultan Healthcare division of Dentsply International.  He is currently responsible for the strategic direction of Infection Prevention, Oral Preventive and Restorative product categories for Sultan Healthcare. He has 19 years of classic consumer marketing and business-to-business marketing experience and has been involved with OSAP for the past 10 years.

“OSAP is a unique organization in that all constituents join together for the common objective of safe oral healthcare for all,” said Tim Lorencovitz.  “This organization holds a lot of promise as the primary resource for the entire dental community when it comes to helping prevent the spread of infection. In the coming year we will continue to develop our educational content while we build stronger awareness of the organization within the profession. It is an honor to serve as chairman.”

OSAP’s executive committee also includes:

John O’Keefe BDentSc MDentSc MBA will serve as vice-chair.  He is a general dentist, who is director of Knowledge Networks,and editor-in-chief with the Canadian Dental Association (CDA). He is responsible for the development of JCDA Oasis as a clinical decision support system for the dental office. He has been chair of the communications committee of the FDI World Dental Federation and also president of the American Association of Dental Editors. He is currently a member of the board of AboutFace, an advocacy group for persons touched by facial difference. He has honorary fellowships and memberships with a number of dental organizations and honor societies.

Kathy Eklund RDH MHP continues to serve as secretary.  She is Director of Infection Control and Occupational Health, and Research Subject and Patient Safety Advocate at Forsyth Institute in Boston. She also is an adjunct assistant professor at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Services and Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene, where she teaches senior level courses in oral health research. She is a past chair of OSAP and also served on the OSAP Foundation board of directors. She volunteers and works with a number of professional organizations, and serves as faculty for the New England AIDS Education and Training Center (NEAETC) and HIVdent.org.

Mike Smurr will serve as treasurer.  He is the Director of Marketing, Merchandise for Patterson Dental. He began his dental career in 1982 as a territory manager, serving Ohio, Illinois and Wisconsin. After moving to marketing in 1986, Smurr worked in Germany with the international marketing team of Bayer Dental for two years. Returning to the U.S., he held positions of increasing responsibility, from key account manager to national sales manager. He moved to Patterson in 2000. In his current role, he is responsible for interactions between Patterson Dental and more than 800 manufacturers with whom Patterson works.

Leslie Grant DDS MSPA is the immediate past chairman of the board.  She also is a member of the National Dental Association since 1986 and served as its President in 2006. She owned a private practice in Baltimore City for more than twenty years, and provided school-based public services with the city's health department for eight years.  She is a member of the American Dental Association and serves on the Give Kids a Smile Advisory Committee, as well as numerous other organizations, task forces and boards of directors.  She is the recipient of many impressive accolades including being named one of the 100 Most Influential African Americans in 2006 in Ebony Magazine.

OSAP’s directors are:

Carmen (Yolanda) Bonta DDS MS is the President of HealthKnowledge LLC.  She spent 18 years with Colgate-Palmolive Corporation as director of technology. Her responsibilities included managing global professional relationships and marketing activities, clinical research and development and introduction of new products. She has held numerous administrative and fellowship appointments; she serves on various editorial boards, academic and scientific committees; is the recipient of several professional awards and honors and has authored many research publications and journal books. She also holds two patents.

Doug Braendle, US Product Manager for SciCan, is responsible for product training including internally and the training of their corporate selling partners. He works with leading industry clinicians and corporate sales partners, including Henry Schein Dental, Patterson Dental, Benco Dental, Burkhart Dental and Atlanta Dental. He is also in charge of all dental shows. He received his undergraduate degree from Indiana State University.

Karen Gregory RN is Director of Compliance and Education for Total Medical Compliance. She has more than 20 years of experience working in the outpatient environment, both delivering patient care and management.  She joined Total Medical Compliance in 2006 as where she is responsible for the development and supervision of compliance programs within the organization. A much-in-demand speaker, she also serves on the Editorial Review Board for OSAP’s Infection Control in Practice and frequently contributes articles to local and state organizational publications.

Leanne Keefer RDH MSM is General Manager and Director of Education for Crosstex International. She served 16 years as adjunct faculty at Indiana University followed by six years as the director of the dental hygiene program at Community College of Denver. She is committed to maintaining Crosstex’s leadership position with influential dental care professionals, proactively identifying trends in the field of oral care and infection prevention and establishing the company’s long-term strategy related to education and professional relations. As a noted international speaker, she has addressed professional audiences worldwide with an extensive array of dental, healthcare and business topics.

Jennifer Naylor is General Manager, IMS and Infection Control Strategic Business Unit for Hu-Friedy Manufacturing. She oversees financial and management responsibility for the development and implementation of the global strategy for IMS and disposable product lines. She joined Hu-Friedy in 2001, and has held several marketing positions within the company. She has wide-ranging experience in strategic planning, creating education and training material, managing new product teams, launching new products and developing strategic alliance partnerships with key industry leaders. Ms. Naylor received her BS in Biology from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her MBA from DePaul University.

Sheila Strock DMD MPH is the Senior Manager of Interprofessional Relations in the Division of Dental Practice/Professional Affairs, Council on Access, Prevention and Interprofessional Relations (CAPIR) at the American Dental Association. She received her dental degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1980 and her MPH from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1991.  She began her career in the U.S. Public Health Service in Rockford, Illinois.  She has 17 years of clinical practice experience and 20 years of experience in the dental industry in the areas of risk management, quality assurance, utilization review, fraud and abuse prevention, grievance resolution, malpractice litigation review and analysis of effectivity by specific dental plans.
