More Children Undergoing Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures

Posted on Wednesday, October 9, 2013

The number of children undergoing cosmetic dentistry procedures like dental veneers and teeth whitening is increasing, says a Cosmetic Dentistry Guide report (www.cosmeticdentistryguide.co.uk).

The range of procedures reportedly being asked of pediatric dentists include false teeth to replace broken or missing teeth and other procedures for improving children’s smile esthetics.

Dr. Warren A. Brill, President of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, is quick to point out that these cosmetic procedures are best avoided until a child’s permanent teeth have erupted and settled in the mouth—unless there is a serious problem or the issue is causing significant emotional distress.

Tooth bleaching is among the most common procedures for children, but Dr. Brill asserts that the procedure carries few health risks and will usually involve a less-concentrated bleaching solution to ensure gum irritation is limited.

Dental veneers, however, a procedure that can restore chipped or broken teeth, will normally require the removal of enamel layers. Dr. Brill says that good oral hygiene is vital if veneers are chosen, and foods that can stain the teeth should be avoided.

Dr. Brill added that cosmetic dentistry must be thoroughly discussed by the dentist, parent(s) and child before going ahead.
