Dr. Bill Costerton, the “father of biofilms,” passed away on May 12. He served as Director of Microbiology Research, Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Allegheny General Hospital and Director of Biofilm Research, Allegheny - Singer Research Institute, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Previously, he established the University of Southern California Center for Biofilms at the School of Dentistry, and also served as Director of the Center for Biofilm Engineering at Montana State University-Bozeman. He established the first biofilm research institute at the University of Montana.
