Deadline for ADA’s New Investigator Award Set for September 30

Posted on Wednesday, October 9, 2013

The ADA is accepting applications for the 2013 John W. Stanford New Investigator Award. Applications are due Sept. 30.

The ADA created the award in 2011 to encourage new dentists and dental students to conduct standards-based research and standards development. Dental students and dentists who earned their dental degree no earlier than 2008 are eligible to apply. Applicants must submit an original research report that could be published and an explanation of how the research incorporates current dental standards and/or contributes to dental standards development.

Applications can be downloaded at ADA.org/dentalstandards. The ADA will announce a winner in December.

The winner will receive airfare and a two-night hotel stay to present the award-winning research report in Charlotte, N.C., at the March 2014 meeting of the ADA Standards Committee on Dental Products and the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to the International Organization for Standardization Technical Committee 106 on Dentistry.

John W. Stanford, PhD, who died in February 2011, was a 40-year ADA employee and one of the ADA Standards Programs' most vital figures, having played a major role in standards setting and development. The ADA credits Dr. Stanford with establishing its current standards program.

The ADA has played a key part in the development of dental standards since 1928. Expert volunteers from the ADA Standards Committee on Dental Products and the U.S. Technical Advisory Group develop national and international dental standards.
