MINNEAPOLIS/ST.PAUL, MN (December 5, 2012) — The American Dental Education Association Gies Foundation (ADEAGies) has awarded the Minnesota Dental Research Center for Biomaterials and Biomechanics (MDRCBB) a 2013 William J. Gies Awards for Vision, Innovation, and Achievement for Outstanding Vision - Public or Private Partner.

MDRCBB is a unique public-private collaboration between the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and 3M with over 30 years of presence and productivity.   Open to other companies interested in the advancement of state-of-the-art research and development in biomaterials and biomechanics, the MDRCBB is a leader in assessing the anticipated performance of new dental materials and appliances using clinically-relevant simulation and measurement technology.

“We are all very pleased to see that the pioneers of dental materials research and education – namely Bill Douglas, Dick Fields and Harvey Anderson – get recognized for their vision to set up the center all those years ago,” said Alex Fok, Ph.D., the University’s academic director of the MDRCBB. “Furthermore, we’re grateful to the continuing administrative support of the University of Minnesota and 3M. “

The Gies Awards, named after dental education pioneer William J. Gies, Ph.D., honor individuals and organizations exemplifying dedication to the highest standards of vision, innovation, and achievement in dental education, research, and leadership. Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products, Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc., is the premier sponsor.

“Through the MDRCBB, 3M and the University of Minnesota share a passion for good science, innovation and making a difference in dentistry.  As a founding member of the MDRCBB, we are truly proud of the accomplishments that have come from this collaboration,” said Dr. Alfred Viebeck, Vice President, R&D, 3M ESPE Dental.

The ADEAGies Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the American Dental Education Association. For more than 50 years, the ADEAGies Foundation has enhanced the oral health of the public through programs that support dental education, research, leadership and recognition.

"Our partnership with 3M has yielded many successes, of which this is the latest example,” said Leon A. Assael, D.M.D., dean of the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. “It’s been exciting to see the advances in oral health care that have resulted from our collaborations.”
