California Dentists Targeting Patients Who Go More Than 12 Months Between Check-Ups

(Newswire.net -- May 11, 2013) Riverside, CA -- Several Riverside, Calif., dentists are running “new patient” specials targeting people who have gone 12+ months without seeing a dentist for at least a check-up.

A recent Gallup-Healthways poll of 355,000+ Americans revealed that 34% of the US population did not visit a dentist in any form last year. More than one-third of US residents have neglected their dental visits due to several factors.

The top three reasons reported in the survey were cost, lack of importance, and, finishing third, was phobia of going to the dentist.

“This is a big problem,” said Dr. Muna Soltan, one of the Riverside dentists offering new patient specials. “Lack of regular check-ups results in much more expensive dental work down the road. It isn't something that you can just have looked at every few years.”

According to the data, as people age the percentage who don't visit a dentist at least annually increases. The percent of children ages 2-17 with a dental visit in the past year: 78.9% . Percent of adults ages 18-64 with a dental visit in the past year: 61.1%. Percent of adults ages 65 and over with a dental visit in the past year: 57.7%

Another big reason for the increase in people going more than 1 year between dental visits is the economy. High unemployment means that less and less people are going without dental insurance, which leaves the full cost of their dental care to them.

“The longer that people go between check-ups, the higher the chance of having a serious dental condition that could have been avoided with simple check-ups,” said Dr. Megeen D. Zareh, another Riverside dentist offering new patient specials.
