True Simplification with Bulk Filling

A new option for fast and easy posterior restorations

James Braun, DDS, MS

With the advent of bulk-fill materials, dentists like myself are able to complete direct composite restorations in fewer steps than ever before, especially for large posterior restorations. When bulk-fill composite materials were first introduced, I began researching and testing several brands, searching for a material that provided the best-looking restoration while maintaining structural integrity. After much searching, I beta tested 3M™ ESPE™ Filtek™ Bulk Fill Posterior Restorative and knew my search for a reliable and easy-to-use bulk-fill material had ended.

Filtek Bulk Fill posterior restorative has several unique characteristics that I haven’t found in other bulk-fill materials. It easily flows into the cavity and adapts to the interproximal walls to fill any voids and helps prevent marginal leakage. Compared with other bulk-fill materials, I have confidence knowing the material will go where I want it to and will sculpt easily once dispensed into the cavity preparation, which can conveniently be done using a routine composite dispensing gun.

Based on the true nanofiller technology of previous Filtek restoratives, the material has high strength and wear resistance and allows for excellent surface smoothness and gloss retention. I’ve found the overall esthetics to be very natural looking, with the material blending into the dentin and enamel almost seamlessly. True to the Filtek brand, once polished, the restoration’s chameleon-like properties make the margins nearly invisible.

With its “one and done” system, Filtek Bulk Fill posterior restorative allows me to place up to 5 mm in one increment without the need of a capping layer, saving me time and energy. When I can eliminate the steps associated with incremental layering a large restoration, I’m able to finish the restoration more quickly and avoid the increased risk of contamination and postoperative sensitivity due to contractual forces.

With a bulk-fill material that adapts well, saves time, and offers high esthetics, every dentist can benefit on his or her next direct posterior restoration.
