RelyX™ Unicem 2 Automix Self-Adhesive Resin Cement

3M ESPE’s next-generation cement offers enhanced formulation and convenient delivery.

RelyX™ Unicem 2 Automix Self-Adhesive Resin Cement, the next-generation cement from 3M ESPE, offers strength, performance, and simplicity, all of which are key factors for clinical success and patient satisfaction. The product also offers the added convenience of a new automix delivery system.

The new formulation is built on the chemistry of its predecessor, RelyX™ Unicem Self-Adhesive Resin Cement, the most clinically proven self-adhesive cement worldwide. RelyX Unicem cement has been applied more than 50 million times, and has been the subject of numerous clinical and laboratory studies. The next generation incorporates all of the benefits of the original including moisture tolerance, low postoperative sensitivity, and high long-term stability. However, it also offers enhanced color stability, bond strength, and moisture tolerance.

Several modifications were made to ensure the new delivery system’s quality and reliability. An additional monomer and a new rheology modifier were added to the mixture, and the processing of filler particles has been optimized. This formulation displays increased mechanical properties and excellent adhesion performance.

Convenient Formulation

RelyX Unicem 2 Automix cement’s formulation offers added convenience through its automix delivery system (Figure 1 and Figure 2). The syringe extrudes the ready-mixed cement through mixing tips, which are available in different sizes. The regular mixing tip is suitable for crown-and-bridge cases. The intraoral tip is recommended for syringing material directly into the patient’s mouth; in the case of an inlay preparation, for example. The thin endodontic tips allow precise application of the cement directly into the root canal from bottom to top, reducing the risk of air bubbles and voids during cementation of the post.

Excess cement can be easily removed, which means clean-up can be done quickly. Leftover cement can be gently wiped away after brief exposure to a curing light on all margins.

A Simple, Strong Solution

The convenience of RelyX Unicem 2 Automix cement extends beyond the new automix delivery system as it is indicated for a number of different restorations, including final cementation of all ceramic, composite, or metal inlays; onlays, crowns and bridges, 2- and 3-unit Maryland bridges, and 3-unit inlay/onlay bridges. It performs equally well in the final cementation of posts and screws, and all ceramic, composite, or metal restorations on implant abutments.

RelyX Unicem 2 Automix cement quickly becomes pH-neutral and hydrophobic, making it more stable over time. The cement exhibits excellent shear-bond strength to dentin and enamel, providing a long-lasting and secure restoration. In addition, RelyX Unicem 2 Automix cement has a very low susceptibility to discoloration, making it a reliable choice when esthetics are important.

The Perfect Combination in Endo Treatment

RelyX Unicem 2 Automix cement was designed to be paired with 3M ESPE’s RelyX™ Fiber Post. The combination of a strong post with a dentin-like flex, a convenient delivery, and a proven cement helps to ensure the clinical success of post placement. RelyX Fiber Post does not require pretreatment when cemented with RelyX Unicem 2 Automix cement. Tests show that applying a ceramic primer or bonding agent does not significantly increase the bond strength to the post. The bond strength between RelyX Unicem 2 Automix cement and RelyX Fiber Post is actually much higher than the typical cement–dentin bond strength. Therefore, any attempt to increase the bond strength of the cement–post interface is not necessary.

Saving Time and Avoiding Tooth Sensitivity

Designed to be self-adherent and moisture-tolerant, RelyX Unicem 2 Automix cement is pretreatment-free, and saves time by eliminating the steps of etching, priming, and bonding. The unique chemistry of RelyX Unicem 2 Automix cement demineralizes and penetrates into the tooth surface without using a separate acid-etching step. Because fewer steps are needed, postoperative sensitivity is greatly reduced. In a field test of 1,593 restorations, conducted by 3M ESPE in January 2010, sensitivity was reported for only 0.25% of the restorations placed with RelyX Unicem 2 Automix cement.

Some waiting time is recommended for other self-adhesive resin cements, but RelyX Unicem 2 Automix cement can be light-cured immediately. In addition, high bond strengths will be achieved, due to the highly efficient and fast initiator system in combination with the unique adhesive technology.

Backed by Proven Success

RelyX Unicem 2 Automix cement is backed by years of innovative technology, based on a formulation that has achieved clinical success. Many have already placed their trust in RelyX Unicem cement, and dental professionals can now benefit from the convenience and performance of the new automix delivery system. RelyX Unicem 2 Automix cement saves time in the operatory, and will provide patients with a comfortable restoration that looks good and stays strong over time.
