American Society for Dental Aesthetics Presents Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Byoung Suh

Posted on Monday, December 12, 2022

The ASDA was founded in 1976 to promote and educate dentists and the public about the life-changing effects of Aesthetic Dentistry. At the 2022 International Conference on Aesthetic Dentistry held October 19-22, 2022, at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa in Indian Wells, California, Dr. Byoung Suh received the ASDA Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to Adhesive Dentistry. He developed the first American made dentin bonding agent that was proven to be safe and effective. He changed the lives of millions of patients who could successfully have composite restorations bonded to their dentin and root surfaces.

This system has been used by over 100,000 dentists in 70 countries and has produced over 200 research publications. It has since become the industry standard against which all new bonding materials are compared. His research significantly contributed to the popularization of the “total-etch” and “wet-bonding” concepts. In 2012 he introduced the first single bottle universal dentin bonding agent. His latest developments include the Thera family of calcium releasing products.

Dr. Suh has become a well-known and sought-after lecturer and teacher throughout the world. Besides lecturing extensively in the US and Canada, he has traveled to over 40 countries and has given more than 250 lectures and presentations at various dental associations, universities, and dental research conventions. Dr. Suh has also authored or co-authored over 150 articles and abstracts and has completed a tremendous amount of research on bonding. Many of his research articles have become required reading for undergraduate and postgraduate dental school programs. He published his book, Principles of Adhesion Dentistry, in February 2013.

The American Society for Dental Aesthetics is proud to present the Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Byoung Suh for his contributions to Adhesive Dentistry.

Delta Dental of Tennessee Launches 10th Annual Holiday Campaign With $75,000 Pledge to Children's Hospitals

Posted on Friday, December 9, 2022

Card features a wreath of footprints of NICU babies at Ayers Children’s Medical Center in Jackson

Delta Dental of Tennessee (Delta Dental) today launched its 10th annual holiday campaign, pledging a collective $75,000 in donations to the seven children’s hospitals across the state. The funding will be directed in part based on public input, and Tennesseans are invited to select the children’s hospital close to their home or their heart to receive additional dollars from Delta Dental online.

This year’s campaign highlights the critical role that neonatal intensive care units, often referred to as NICUs, play in supporting families through an incredibly challenging time. Tennessee has the 10th highest pre-term birth rate in the country; in 2021, one in nine babies born in the state was pre-term.

Michael Vincent was one of them. Baby Mike was born at 28 weeks and weighed just over 1 pound. He spent 84 days in the NICU at Ayers Children’s Medical Center in Jackson, Tenn. His mother, Breion Douglas Vincent, is grateful for both the care he received and the ability to access that care so close to home.

“With him being there so long, I was just grateful that he was literally fifteen minutes away. If anything happened, I had access to him instead of me having to travel all the way to Memphis,” Vincent said. “I honestly think I would have quit my job if I had to go to Memphis because I would have said, ‘You know what, I have to be close to my baby.’”

The NICU at Ayers is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year; learn more about the Vincent family’s story here.

Across the state, NICUs are expanding to meet the growing needs of their respective regions so that more families like the Vincents can access the critical care they need close to home. In Memphis, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital is undergoing an expansion that will add an additional 14 NICU beds to its existing 60-bed unit, which operates near capacity. The NICU at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt is now one of the largest in the country following its 2020 expansion. In east Tennessee, the NICUs at East Tennessee Children's Hospital in Knoxville and at Niswonger Children’s Hospital in Johnson City together care for nearly 2,000 babies each year.

“Being able to access high-quality health care – especially for your child – close to home is so important, and we are always happy to highlight the terrific work happening at Ayers and children’s hospitals across the state,” said Dr. Phil Wenk, CEO of Delta Dental of Tennessee. “Giving back is a huge priority for us at Delta Dental, and this campaign is one of my favorite things we do – who doesn’t love a little friendly competition for a good cause?”

For the last two years in a row, Ayers Children’s Hospital has received the most support in the holiday campaign. Ayers received approximately 40% of the selections for the past two years, even as the overall participation in the campaign doubled.

“We were delighted to be a bigger part of the campaign this year,” said Frank McMeen, president of the West Tennessee Healthcare Foundation. “Our NICU nurses had fun helping us create the art and we’re proud to help bring awareness to these critical community resources that are available statewide.”

Planet DDS Partners with Overjet to Usher in New Era of AI-Powered Dental Imaging

Posted on Thursday, December 8, 2022

Advanced AI capabilities enhance dentists’ ability to detect and diagnose decay and bone loss, gain deep clinical insights, improve operational efficiency, and increase case acceptance.

Planet DDS, the leading provider of cloud-based dental software, today announced a partnership with Overjet, the industry leader in dental artificial intelligence (AI) solutions, to incorporate AI capability into its Apteryx XVWeb Cloud Imaging software and all-in-one practice management solution, Denticon. The new AI integration will provide real-time decision support to dentists as they review X-ray images with patients and increase confidence in their clinical decisions, promote proactive and preventative care, and enhance provider-patient relationships.

This is the only partnership in the industry that collectively delivers:

● An FDA-cleared solution that can quantify bone levels in addition to detecting and outlining decay.

● The scalability of the Apteryx XVWeb software, allowing practices to use virtually any imaging device.

The groundbreaking partnership is also uniquely positioned with a large number of existing practices in common, including many of the top dental service organizations (DSOs) in the country, that will have access to this new AI capability in Apteryx XVWeb.

Overall, practices report an increase of about 21% in case acceptance when patients are shown their X-rays with AI annotations, according to an Overjet customer study.

Currently, many factors can negatively affect diagnostic accuracy, including image quality, lighting conditions, cognitive errors, and device settings. As a result, a significant number of dental conditions, such as decay and bone loss, can go undiagnosed. With Overjet’s AI technology integrated into Apteryx XVWeb software, dentists and patients can gain more meaningful insights from X-rays and focus their attention on areas of concern.

“Cloud and AI technologies are transforming the practice of dentistry. With this integration, dentists can harness the power of both technologies to give patients more transparency and confidence in diagnosis and treatment planning,” says Eric Giesecke, CEO of Planet DDS. “We are in constant pursuit of delivering innovations for the dental industry, so we are delighted to partner with a company like Overjet to combine AI with our imaging solution, Apteryx XVWeb.”

Overjet’s AI solution analyzes and annotates radiographs in real-time, detecting and outlining decay in color to help dentists and patients see even small cavities. It also quantifies bone loss, which is often an indicator of periodontal disease. Overjet also reviews and analyzes 18 months of radiographs from prior appointments and cross-references the clinical findings with information in the practice management system to provide additional clinical insights and operational efficiencies.

“Dental AI adds markups to Apteryx XVWeb images to help dentists determine optimal care and enhance patient communication,” said Wardah Inam, PhD, co-founder and CEO of Overjet. “The AI opportunity across the dental sector is substantial as many practitioners are just now becoming familiar with the power of the advanced technology to enhance diagnostic decisions, care delivery, operations, and patient loyalty.”

Apteryx XVWeb is a cloud-based dental imaging solution that allows practices to store, view, and optimize clinical images for treatment planning. Designed to work with virtually all imaging devices and practice management solutions, Apteryx offers anytime, anywhere access.

Esthetic Results – Simple and Efficient: IPS e.max Press sets standards in press technology

Posted on Thursday, December 8, 2022

The Ivoclar Group, one of the world's leading manufacturers of integrated solutions for high-quality dental applications with a comprehensive portfolio of products and systems for dentists and dental technicians, established a completely new way of manufacturing dental restorations when it transformed its revolutionary idea of pressing restorations from all-ceramic materials into reality: the press technology was born. A milestone in minimally invasive esthetic dentistry, press technology has been successfully used in clinical applications for many years and enables the fabrication of restorations that are distinguished by their outstanding accuracy of fit, function and esthetics. IPS e.max Press is the original lithium disilicate glass-ceramic designed for the press technique. The material is the result of more than a decade of research, experience and continuous development. Designed to work hand in glove, the IPS e.max Press ceramic materials, Programat® press furnaces and the PrograPrint® 3D printing system combine all the features that make the difference in today’s dental technology: efficient production of restorations, paired with the expertise and esthetic sensitivity of the dental technician, and optimally coordinated digital workflows to give patients* that little bit more quality of life.

Pioneers in digital dentistry

Digitalization has come to play a vital role in dental technologies and laboratories today and its impact is likely to increase in the future. The materials and manufacturing processes will continue to evolve. Workflows can be streamlined and made more efficient by digitalizing some of the steps involved. For example, processes of coordinated digital steps will lead to time savings in the manufacturing of restorations. For patients, this means that they will receive their restorations earlier. In spite of the advances in digital technology, craftsmanship and expertise will remain essential to the fabrication of restorations.

Press technology that inspires

With IPS e.max Press, Ivoclar supplies press ceramic materials that meet high quality requirements, whilst delivering exceptionally accurate and esthetic final results. The high flexural strength and fracture toughness of the materials enable minimally invasive restorations. Available in various degrees of translucency and shades, the materials offer a maximum level of flexibility in the dental practice and laboratory. Paired with the Programat® G2 press furnaces, Ivoclar provides everything that is needed for a smooth workflow, enabling dental technicians and laboratories to benefit from unparalleled added value. The Programat press furnaces are a reliable partner for laboratories and dental technicians thanks to a host of proven technical features, including the fully automatic press function (FPF), automatic double-range temperature calibration (ATK2), crack detection system (CDS), optimized software user interface and additional IoT functions. The ceramic press workflow can be conveniently integrated into other digital workflows in the laboratory and practice. So, the Ivoclar press technology is future-proof and efficient, even 30 years after it was launched. For instance, the PrograPrint 3D printing system can be ideally integrated into any conventional ceramic press procedure. The 3D printer (PrograPrint PR5) can print wax objects such as inlays, onlays, crowns or bridges for investing in the press technique, using an efficient digital procedure. This way, operators can capitalize on the advantages of additive manufacturing.

Profit can be planned

Efficient productive work processes and solid commercial management safeguard the laboratory’s capacity to invest and remain viable in today’s world. The components of the Ivoclar press technology are optimally coordinated with each other to ensure high-precision restorations. Economically efficient and effective manufacturing methods enable dental technicians to benefit from high productivity, while at the same time keeping investment costs low. Ivoclar offers the IPS e.max Calculator to calculate the production costs of the required restorations easily in just a few clicks. So, profit and cost effectiveness can be established before the work is begun and this information can assist in choosing the right workflow.

Press Technology Summit 2022

In September 2022, Ivoclar hosted a digital event that attracted over 2000 customers from over 75 countries. Eight dental experts shared their experiences and findings in relation to the “Esthetics, restoration types and clinical evidence”. Anyone who is interested in finding out more can view the presentations on demand until 28 February 2023:

Oral Health Organizations Urge Congress to Strengthen Extensive Adult Dental Benefits for All State Medicaid Programs

Posted on Wednesday, December 7, 2022

Oral Health Leaders Say This Change Will Promote Positive Health Outcomes, Address Inequities, and Curb Rising Health Care Costs

The Oral Health Response Workgroup, a collection of leaders and organizations from across the dental industry, is calling on Congress to improve oral health equity and access by including extensive adult dental benefits in all state Medicaid programs.

The Workgroup recently released a community statement affirming that this change will promote positive health outcomes, address health inequities, and curb health care costs.

“Access to affordable oral health care is out of reach for millions of low-income people, people with disabilities, communities of color, LGBTQIA+ people, and tribal and rural communities,” said Myechia Minter-Jordan, MD, MBA, president and CEO at CareQuest Institute for Oral Health®. “Congress has the opportunity to change that by ensuring that all state Medicaid programs offer extensive dental benefits to all members. This is a chance to meaningfully address long-standing health disparities that have existed in this system for far too long. We stand ready to serve as a resource and to work with Congress to ensure improved health outcomes for all communities.”

Medicaid is a key source of health care coverage for more than 80 million people in the United States, but dental coverage for adult Medicaid beneficiaries is optional for states. While most states provide at least emergency/urgent dental benefits (defined differently by states) for adults, nearly one-third of all states do not provide dental care beyond emergency procedures. According to a new Medicaid Adult Dental Coverage Checker, 47 state Medicaid programs are not currently offering dental benefits sufficient to maintain optimal oral health.

“Oral health equity in this country is a very real issue and is exacerbated within the Medicaid population,” said Ann Lynch, director of advocacy for the American Dental Hygienists’ Association. “Virtually all dental disease is preventable. In the US, it is incumbent on us to make the investment to better the lives of all.”

In its community statement, the Oral Health Response Workgroup stressed the relationship between oral health and overall health and the need for Medicaid programs to address whole-person health. When whole-person health is addressed, the whole community benefits by lower health care costs, increased employability, and healthy applicants across industries.

The Workgroup also highlighted that access to routine, preventive dental care can offset the cost of expensive and unanticipated problems in chronic disease maintenance in conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and behavioral health conditions. A recent study conducted by the American Dental Association Health Policy Institute estimates $273 million per year in medical care savings if extensive dental services were offered in the 28 state Medicaid programs where they are restrictive.

“Oral health is the top unmet health need,” said Marko Vujicic, PhD, chief economist and vice president at the ADA Health Policy Institute (HPI). “When low-income adults have access to dental coverage, their employability prospects improve. There's less spending for chronic health conditions when oral health is maintained. Until we ensure low-income adults have dental coverage, we're paying an economic penalty."

Additionally, increased access to dental care for Medicaid adult enrollees can significantly reduce costly emergency department (ED) visits for dental conditions. Dental-related ED visits nationwide cost an estimated $2.1 billion per year, but nearly 79% of those visits could’ve been addressed in a dental office, saving up to $1.7 billion per year.

“It is vital for Congress to understand and acknowledge the critical need to reassess our dental care delivery system to ensure that everyone is able to get the care they need,” said Colin Reusch, senior advisor of oral health policy at Community Catalyst. “We’re asking lawmakers to consider comprehensive and long-term policy solutions that eliminate inequitable barriers to oral health for adults across the country.”

Support for extensive dental coverage for Medicaid-enrolled adults come from across the dental industry including providers, consumer advocates, dental plans, dental service organizations, dental practices, payors, dental supply manufacturers, state dental boards, community clinics, the public health community, government, academia, and philanthropy. The organizations include:

● American Dental Association

● American Dental Hygienists' Association

● Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors (ASTDD)

● CareQuest Institute for Oral Health

● Community Catalyst

● Dental Trade Alliance

● Diverse Dental Society
