Brady Teaches New Dentists How to Avoid Restorative Failures

Posted on Wednesday, October 21, 2015

GLENDALE, Ariz.Oct. 20, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Patients think that dental restorations such as crowns and bridges last forever, but in reality they don't. Dental treatments actually have a predictable lifespan. It is based on many factors, some within the dentist's control and some not. The lifetime of a crown, bridge or dental implant may be shortened due to the patient's home care, biting forces, diet and even genetics.

"Dentists, especially those new to the profession, lose sleep and stomach lining worrying about the failure of their patient's dental crowns and other restorations," says Dr. Brady. "I hope to help them reduce failures with my presentation 'Avoiding Restorative Failure' at the New Dentist's Conference during the ADA Annual Meeting."

Dr. Brady's program helps dentists increase the life of their patient's restorations by:

  • Understanding how to predict potential failures before treatment is planned

  • Reducing the chance of failure by uncovering the patient's unique risk factors

  • Helping dentists educate their patients so they can manage these risk factors effectively

The New Dentist Conference is part of the ADA Annual Meeting being held Nov. 5- 10, 2015 in Washington, DC. Visit their website athttps://www.ada.org/en/meeting.

Getting Kids to Brush their Teeth Just Got Easier with Kolibree's Toothbrush

Posted on Tuesday, October 20, 2015

October 15, 2015, NEW YORK, NY– The ongoing challenge of getting your kids to brush their teeth just got easier with the introduction of Kolibree’s new smart toothbrush and advanced Kolibree app.

Now with Go Pirate 2, the industry’s most engaging smart toothbrush game for children, and Coach, prompting adults with a mindful approach to preventive dental care, Kolibree’s Bluetooth connected sonic toothbrush with 3D motion sensors might be considered the best bathroom invention since toothpaste!

Kids who previously avoided toothbrushing now look forward to it, and their parents can monitor daily brushing without a hassle.

New Features and Enhancements

  • Go Pirate 2, the kids’ game – Proper brushing is rewarded through scores, badges and advancing age-based levels; the leaderboard enables friendly family competition.

  • Kolibree Index – combines frequency, regularity and quality of brushing to keep tabs on dental hygiene habits

  • Check Up (a quick visual view of areas you missed) and Reminders (to set your own times so you’ll remember to brush twice a day) are part of the easy, new navigation bar.

  • Offline mode – Use the Kolibree toothbrush and sync your brushing data even when you’re not using the app. (e.g. brush twice a day and sync twice a week)

  • NEW lower price.

iOS and Android

The Go Pirate 2 game and personalized Coach features are available for iPhone users and are compatible with iOS 9 and Apple Watch. Stabilized Bluetooth connectivity for iPhone is among the new improvements. Current Kolibree users automatically receive app updates.

Kolibree is the only smart toothbrush with a game for Android. Android app updates are planned to launch later this year. New iOS and Android games are now in development and planned to launch January 2016.

“Kolibree is focused on smart solutions for daily life. As a parent who knows that most children would rather play a game than brush their teeth, combining the two was a logical solution. The intelligence built into the Kolibree toothbrush provides real-time feedback for parents and enables a personalized approach to dental care with the ability to send data directly to a family dentist,” said Kolibree CEO and co-founder Thomas Serval.

The National Institutes for Health cite tooth decay as the most prevalent chronic disease in children and adults, even though it is largely preventable. Kolibree has created a playful tooth brushing experience to improve and maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Innovative Dental Composite Receives FDA Clearance

Posted on Tuesday, October 20, 2015

COLUMBIA, Mo. –Dental composites are the synthetic resins or mixtures dentists use to restore teeth to their original hardness and rigidity. Made of amalgams—mixtures of mercury, silver or tin, or composites such as silica, ceramic or plastic compounds—longevity and performance often vary, and the composites are prone to breakages. Now, a University of Missouri engineer who has developed a “flowable” composite that can be injected in a cavity and hardened through a high-intensity light, recently received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration to produce this product on a commercial scale.

Because of the short life span of normal composites, it is estimated that replacement fillings comprise 75 percent of a dentist’s work. Additionally, the short life span of everyday composites is one of the most critical challenges for restorative dentistry, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Hao Li, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering in the MU College of Engineering, and president of Nanova Biomaterials Inc., created a composite using calcium phosphate nanofibers that significantly improves the strength of the tooth while retaining the shine.

“Calcium phosphate fibers are microscopic nanofibers that have their strength in inverse proportion to their diameter,” Li said. “This means if the diameter of the nanostructure shrinks 100 times, the strength may increase 10 times—basically, as the fibers get thinner, they become stronger.”

NovaPro Flow, which is a composite that incorporates nanofiber technology, is applied as a liquid composite through a syringe and can be easily and precisely delivered to the teeth of a patient. Once the composite is fitted to the cavity properly, it is cured with a blue light, which causes the composite to hardening less than 20 seconds. Once hardened, the nanofibers provide support to the overall structure ensuring greater longevity, much like rebar in concrete.

“We tested our composite against all other commercial dental filling products,” Li said. “It’s stronger than anything else we have seen on the market.”

Funding for the research was provided by Li’s 2009 National Science Foundation CAREER award, which totaled $430,000, and another $410,000 NIH grant. A Chinese venture capital firm, SummitView Capital, provided additional funding for mass production and the lengthy FDA clearance process as part of its more than $7 million investment in the company.

Li also is working on gaining FDA approval for more nanofiber-based biomaterials, including universal dental composites. The company already has produced a dental varnish, StarBrightTM. NBI opened its Columbia facility in 2013, where it currently manufactures all of its innovative nanofiber products.

Li’s work also showcases the role the University of Missouri plays in economic development for the state. The MU Office of Economic Development works to build strategic collaborations to grow research and service contracts; enhance internships, experiential learning opportunities and job placements; develop long-term philanthropy collaborations; explore collaborations for new funding opportunities; and accelerate entrepreneurship and commercialization to advance the growth of local, state and regional economies.

5 Questions to Ask Your Dentist about Your Opioid Prescription

Posted on Monday, October 19, 2015

NEW YORK, Oct. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- In an effort to further address the nation's opiate addiction crisis, the three-time Emmy® award-winning, The Dr. Oz Show, jointly with the American Academy of Academy of Family Physicians and the American Dental Association will issue a wallet size card as part of Monday's show containing five crucial questions people should ask if they are prescribed an opiate pain killer. Because death from drug overdose has now surpassed traffic accidents as the leading cause of death for people under 50, The Dr. Oz Show reached out to major medical groups to collaborate on developing content that would educate viewers on the proper use of opiates and the risks with these medications. There are currently 1.9 million people in America addicted to prescription opiates, and research suggests four out of five heroin addicts began their addiction with a prescription opiate.

"We need to change the way we think about opiate prescriptions and we need everyone to do their part in managing the risk with these powerful medicines," said Mehmet Oz, M.D. host. "The reality is that many doctors who prescribe opiates for sound medical reasons, myself included, do not have the extensive training on proper patient screening and risk management."

Opiate prescriptions are a group of medications that historically have been used in medicine to successfully treat pain for over 150 years. They include major analgesics such as morphine and fentanyl. Oral medications containing oxycodone and hydrocodone are often prescribed to treat acute pain and post dental procedure pain and are very effective. However, without a proper screening discussion of a patient's personal and family history as well a comprehensive warning about the risks of opiate medication, adverse reactions like acute addiction and accidental overdose are common.

As physicians and dentists address the risks through continuing education, The Dr. Oz Show is advising viewers how to have a conversation about these prescriptions with a doctor, nurse, dentist or pharmacist in an effort to reduce their risk of harm.

"Pain is very real. It's very different from person to person, and we need to take a good sense of that person and who they are within the context of their family and their community… opiates should be the last resort. There are many other things to think about for pain and sometimes I think that we've under-utilized those," said Wanda Filer, M.D. president of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

The wallet card with the five questions can be found at www.doctoroz.com, ADA web site www.mouthhealthy.org/painmeds and www.familydoctor.org.

"It is important to remember that everyone's risk factors for addiction vary so its important to speak to your dentist about any prescription you receive for pain and to address your risks," said Ada S. Cooper, DDS, a spokesperson for the American Dental Association.

Also in Monday's show is former congressman Patrick Kennedy whose new book "A Common Struggle" details his personal journey from acute chronic alcoholism and cocaine addiction to recovery as well as his lifelong struggle with bipolar disorder. Kennedy engages Dr. Oz in a passionate discussion about how his own personal experience with addiction motivated him to work tirelessly for social change to diminish the stigma around addiction and mental illness and mandate that behavioral health receive equal reimbursement and protection under the law. Kennedy also reveals deeply personal details from conversations with his father, six term Massachusetts U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy about coming to terms with his alcoholism and working on legislation together in Congress around addiction issues.
