Dentsply Sirona Acquires Cleverdent Ltd

Dentsply Sirona today announced the definitive agreement to acquire Cleverdent Limited. Cleverdent Ltd. developed the ClasenUNO® an innovative fusion of a dental mirror and high volume evacuation (HVE) tip which perfectly complements Dentsply Sirona’s portfolio.

Oral Health America to Award First Program Champion Awards at 28th Annual Gala & Benefit

Oral Health America (OHA) will present two new awards at its 28th Annual Gala & Benefit on February 21, 2018 at the new Marriott Marquis Chicago (at McCormick Place). OHA will recognize two program partners with a Program Champion Award, which acknowledges OHA partners who have demonstrated leadership and a collective impact on the oral health of vulnerable children or older adults in their geographical community.

The Marshall University/West Virginia Oral Health Coalition will be awarded the Smiles Across America® Program Champion Award for their commitment to advancing the oral health of low-income children in West Virginia and their contributions to growing the OHA Webinar Series. Office-Based Dental Anesthesia Gaining Ground over Hospital-Based

Dentist anesthesiologists are a unique medical provider. Their training is related more closely to medical anesthesiologists than to dentists in that they do not receive clinical training in dental or oral surgery. During their three-year residency program, dentist anesthesiologists receive most of their training in a hospital-based setting, performing a minimum of 800 cases of general anesthesia, of which at least 125 must be performed on children younger than seven years of age. However, very little is known about the post-residency practice characteristics of dentist anesthesiologists.

Researchers from the Indiana University School of Dentistry in Indianapolis, Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and the University of California at San Diego recently published a study in the current issue of Anesthesia Progress that examines the procedural differences between dentist and physician anesthesiologists. Using two main dental databases, the National Anesthesia Clinical Outcomes Registry (NACOR) and the Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia Clinical Outcomes Registry (SCOR), for dental and oral surgery procedures, the researchers compared 7,133 office-based procedures performed by dentist anesthesiologists with 106,420 in-hospital procedures provided by physician anesthesiologists.

The information from the SCOR database focused on office-based settings, while NACOR included hospital-based. The data showed that in both groups children six years and younger were the predominant recipients receiving anesthetic dental treatment (two-thirds of NACOR patients; three-fourths of SCOR patients); however, the average age for SCOR was approximately nine years and for NACOR approximately 12 years. The researchers also found a 46 percent longer surgical time for the cases from the NACOR database versus those from the SCOR. Both databases noted that early childhood caries (tooth decay) was the main diagnosis for the dental procedures needing anesthesia.

In reviewing the data, the researchers found a clear correlation between early childhood caries and the need for anesthesia during dental procedures. Given that this is the most common disease among children six years and younger, with more than 4.5 million cases developing each year, pediatric dentists need dentist anesthesiologists. The researchers also found that the overall cost of pediatric dental procedures with anesthesia performed in a hospital-based setting has increased between three and four times than that of 20 years ago. Currently, an 84 percent cost savings is found when anesthesia is administered in an office-based setting.

Overall, there is a consistent trend with more dental anesthetic procedures being performed in an office-based setting, particularly for pediatric dentistry. The researchers have found that, “The anesthesia care provided by dentist anesthesiologists is also separate and distinct from anesthesia provided by oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Oral surgeons are the only other dentists who can legally administer general anesthesia; however, they receive approximately 6 months of general anesthesia training.  Dentist anesthesiologists provide care to younger patients for procedures of longer duration using an independent anesthesia provider model versus oral and maxillofacial surgeons who use the operator-anesthesia model for shorter procedures on older patients.”

More research in this field is necessary because the data collected from the SCOR and NACOR are fairly limited as to the amount of information that is collected from providers on a volunteer level. The researchers concluded that despite the limitations on data collection, they are confident that, “Office-based anesthesia rendered by dentist anesthesiologists is clearly a unique and efficient mode of anesthesia care for dentistry.” They also believe that the increasing trend in office-based procedures with dentist anesthesiologists will continue.

Academy of Laser Dentistry Now Accepting Applications for 2018 Research Grants

The Academy of Laser Dentistry (ALD) the only independent and unbiased non-profit association dedicated to improving patient care with the proper use of laser technology, is now accepting applications for the Dr. Eugene M. Seidner Research Grants Program.

Named in the memory of Dr. Seidner, a laser dentistry pioneer who also served as ALD president 1996-1997, recipients will be honored during the ALD’s 25th Anniversary Conference & Exhibition, April 26-28th at the Caribe Royale Orlando, Florida.

According to ALD executive director Gail Siminovsky, CAE, “We established the scholarship in Dr. Seidner’s honor in 2004. In 2012, we reached our $100,000 fundraising goal, and now in 2018 ALD is excited to introduce research grants to the Seidner opportunities. The grant is intended to strengthen the Academy of Laser Dentistry’s mission of fostering a positive impact on dental laser education and research.” 

Research Grant Details

The Dr. Eugene M. Seidner Research Grant was founded to promote the advancement of dental laser technology education and clinical research. Up to three grant awards totaling up to $20,000.00 may be awarded annually to individuals to promote basic and applied clinical research for the use of lasers in dentistry.

To be considered, the project must broadly assess the role of lasers of dentistry, irrespective of whether the technology is used for surgical, diagnostic, antimicrobial, photo biomodulation, photodynamic therapy, imaging, or biomaterials applications. Research proposals on competing designs or devices are not encouraged.

Primary applicants or at least one team member must be member(s) of the Academy of Laser Dentistry for the past 3 years prior to application. Restorative Dentistry Market Worth $25.9 Billion by 2025

Bisphosphonates Shown to Affect Dental Implant Surgery

Postmenopausal women often suffer from osteoporosis, resulting in a loss of bone mass and strength. To combat this disease, many women take bisphosphonates (BPs), a group of medicines that help slow or prevent bone loss. However, BP therapy in terms of successful dental implantation has not been well documented. Dental implantation tends to be highly predicative in terms of effectiveness, but when medication is introduced that will change the overall landscape of the mandible (jawbone) structure, implant failure can be a side effect.

Researchers from the Kanagawa Dental University Hospital and the Tokyo Medical and Dental University have recently performed a study focused on the use of BP therapy and its effect on the quality of the mandible. The researchers evaluated the bone mineral density and cortical bone thickness (the outer layer bone thickness) of the mandible, as well as how long-term BP therapy effected early implant failure.

This study included 25 female patients, at least 60 years of age, with a previous osteoporosis diagnosis, and who underwent dental implant surgery in the mandible between January 2010 and March 2013. The patients were divided into two groups: (1) the BP group consisted of 11 patients who had been taking BPs for more than one year, and (2) the remaining 14 patients were in the non-BP group and had been prescribed a type of hormone therapy. The patients were compared using several computed tomography (CT) scans of their mandible to gauge bone mineral densities, cortical bone thickness, and the effect that the duration of BP therapy had on these two factors.

The researchers found that in the BP group, 11 patients with a total of 25 implants had three (11.1%) of those implants fail in three (25%) different patients within one year. In the non-BP group, the 14 patients had a total of 28 implants. Every implant in the non-BP group survived. It was also found that the BP group had a higher bone mineral density than the non-BP group, and those patients with a longer duration of BP therapy had increased cortical bone thickness. Overall, the researchers believe that BP use is correlated with increased bone mineral density and cortical bone thickness.

The researchers conclude that, “These results indicate that BPs affect the quality and quantity of the cortical bone in the partially edentulous posterior mandible of patients with osteoporosis, which should be considered prior to treatment with dental implants in patients taking BPs.”

This study was limited by both its small population size and the question of whether or not the medications used in the non-BP group had an effect on the mandible as well (which was not tested). However, the researchers have found that BP therapy does impact the mandible, and clinicians should be mindful that remodeling of the mandible could occur in patients receiving BP therapy, prior to beginning implant treatment.
