Vivos Therapeutics and Candid Announce Strategic Collaboration to Deliver A Comprehensive Sleep Apnea and Orthodontic Treatment Solution

Posted on Monday, October 18, 2021

Vivos Therapeutics, Inc. (“Vivos” or “the Company”) (NASDAQ: VVOS), a medical technology company focused on developing and commercializing innovative diagnostic and treatment modalities for patients suffering from mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and snoring, and Candid Care Co. (“Candid”), a digital platform for oral healthcare, today announced a new collaboration that will seek to provide patients with a comprehensive, whole-mouth solution to diagnose and treat OSA in adult patients and provide orthodontic treatment from the same provider network.

At the core of this collaboration, Vivos and Candid will market each company’s products and areas of expertise to deliver a comprehensive sleep and oral health solution to patients in the United States and Canada. The focus of the collaboration will be Candid’s CandidPro clear aligner for straightening teeth and the Vivos System for treating OSA. The two companies will also share educational resources, training, and key opinion leaders to bridge the gap between airway health and orthodontic therapy.

“By teaming with Candid, we are aiming to provide patients with access not only to our highly effective Vivos System, but also simultaneous access to CandidPro’s novel orthodontic treatment. We believe the Vivos-Candid collaboration will provide for the first solution that seamlessly integrates sleep and orthodontic therapy to create better patient outcomes for treating OSA and enhance overall health and wellness across the board.” said Kirk Huntsman, Vivos Chairman and CEO. “We are hopeful that this joint effort will increase market penetration and accelerate revenue growth for both companies as we each attract and expand our respective North American dental and healthcare networks.”

Additionally, under the terms of the agreement, Vivos and Candid will join forces to explore new research and development opportunities for device development and other alliances related to orthodontics, OSA, and snoring. Candid will also conduct specialized training sessions at the Vivos Institute, the Company’s new state-of-the-art international training center in Denver, Colorado, as well as semi-annual seminars for both dentists and medical doctors to provide additional learning opportunities. The parties will act on a non-exclusive basis, although during the term of the agreement, Candid’s aligners will become the official clear aligner of Vivos and Vivos’ oral devices and proprietary protocols will become the official sleep therapy program of Candid.

“Candid was built on a foundation of clinical excellence and has always put patient health first. Since launching Candid in 2017, my co-founders and I have strived to shine a light on the correlation between teeth alignment, oral health, and chronic illnesses, like obstructive sleep apnea. Vivos Therapeutics and Candid are where airway and sleep, oral health, and orthodontic therapy come together for the first time,” added Nick Greenfield, Candid Co-Founder and CEO. “By combining Vivos’ therapeutic protocol for OSA and its VIP doctor network with Candid's treatment methodology and CandidPro network, together we look forward to offering a full-service solution for patients suffering from OSA.”

“As someone who focuses his practice on combining sleep-disordered breathing, orthodontics and comprehensive dentistry, I know how important it is to treat all oral health conditions as part of one comprehensive solution,” concluded Dr. Ben Miraglia, DDS, Chief Clinical Consultant of Airway Health Solutions, Vivos Provider and recognized thought leader in sleep-disordered breathing, clear aligner therapy and craniofacial development. “The Vivos-Candid alliance is a true win-win for patients who are looking to improve their sleep, oral health and confidence all at the same time.”

National Dental Association and SmileDirectClub Launch Historic Scholarship Program for Diverse Dentists

Posted on Friday, October 15, 2021

Program Targets Oral Health Inequality and is Set to Transform the face of the Dental Profession

Today, the National Dental Association (NDA), the world’s largest and oldest organization of minority oral health professionals, and SmileDirectClub (SDC), the next generation oral care company with the first medtech platform for teeth straightening, are pleased to announce the establishment of the SmileDirectClub-National Dental Association Achievement Scholarship.

“Throughout its 108 years, the National Dental Association has always been dedicated to advancing the concept of health equity. The establishment of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in health care, and the education of future healthcare providers, what we now refer to as ‘JEDI’, is paramount in our mission. For without ‘JEDI’ we become participants in the perpetuation of a system of systemic oppression that has historically had a deleterious effect on health outcomes and healthcare delivery in historically underserved communities. Cultivating and introducing a diverse cadre of new dentists from largely underserved communities into a system, which has to date produced a paltry 3% African American dentists in the United States, is both supremely disruptive and potentially transformational. SmileDirectClub is a bold and sincere ally in this work, and because of their generous investment in the future of health equity, the SmileDirectClub-National Dental Association Achievement Scholarship will be that disruptive and transformational force and a key element to dismantling structural inequality in oral health care for years to come,” said Keith Andrew Perry, Executive Director of the National Dental Association. “SmileDirectClub’s visionary corporate citizenship is worthy of emulation,” he continued.

Scholarship Description:

The National Dental Association (NDA) and SmileDirectClub (SDC) have embarked on a new partnership to increase the number of underrepresented minorities in dentistry and dismantle barriers to health equity. There is a critical shortage of ethnic minority dentists in the US, where less than 4% are African American. SDC will award 28 Student National Dental Association members with a one-time $7,500 scholarship. Eligible applicants must be 2nd, 3rd or 4th year dental students and post-graduate Public Health students. All candidates must demonstrate financial need and a commitment to community service.

Together, we share a common ideology. Health is a matter of civil rights and social justice. Reducing the education debt burden for oral health professional students will allow them to serve in communities where they are needed most.

Today’s students are the hope for tomorrow.

Scholarship Applicant Criteria:

1. Must be currently enrolled in dental school or attending public health residency program

2. Must be a US Citizen or have permanent residence in the US

3. Must be a member of SNDA (D2, D3, D4 awards applicants) or NDA (Post-doctoral Public Health residency program awards applicants)

4. Must be in good financial standing with school/institution and SNDA/NDA

5. Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above

6. Incomplete applications will not be accepted

“As part of our mission to ensure each and every person has access to a smile that they love, SmileDirectClub has launched this scholarship program with the NDA to help underrepresented dental practitioners and underserved communities of color,” said Dr. Riddhi Gangoli, Sr. Director of Professional Education and Marketing, SmileDirectClub. “We are proud to join with the NDA to empower the next generation of African American oral health professionals to remove barriers, so everyone has access to safe, effective, and high-quality oral care.”

Dr. Theresa Cheng Receives 2021 American Dental Association Humanitarian Award

Posted on Friday, October 15, 2021

Theresa Cheng, D.D.S., of Issaquah, Wash., is the recipient of the 2021 American Dental Association (ADA) Humanitarian Award. Each year, the Humanitarian Award honors an ADA member for improving the quality of life and oral health of individuals in the U.S. and internationally over a period of 10 years or more. Dr. Cheng will be honored at ADA SmileCon™ in Las Vegas on October 13.

Dr. Cheng, a retired periodontist, is the founder of Everyone for Veterans (EV4), which aims to improve the quality of life of low-income combat veterans by connecting them to their communities for goods and services, including access to dental care from qualified dental professionals across the country.

Prior to her retirement in 2014, Dr. Cheng provided free dental care to family members caring for veterans returning from combat after hearing the story of a local veteran gravely injured in Iraq and his mother’s experience as his caretaker. Years later, in 2016, Cheng founded EV4 with the goal of expanding comprehensive care to low-income veterans and those returning from war zones.

“I learned quickly that most veterans do not get dental benefits,” said Dr. Cheng. “At EV4, we call dentists around the country where the qualified veterans live and let them know about what we do, and many have answered our calls.” She added, “For these veterans, dentists and staff are not just fixing their teeth, we are feeding their souls.”

As a result of EV4’s community outreach efforts, more than 480 low-income, combat veterans in more than 30 states have received free comprehensive dental treatment to date. EV4 also networks with dozens of specialists and dental labs across the U.S. that have agreed to provide volunteer services to low-income veterans. In addition, dental schools from the University of Iowa to the University of Washington serve veterans through EV4.

First established in 2008, the ADA Humanitarian Award annually honors an ADA member for creating a legacy of volunteer works, and is one of the ADA’s highest honors. Criteria for the Humanitarian Award include significantly improving the quality of life and oral health, demonstrating significant leadership and serving as an inspiration to others both in the dental profession and the general population.

“Dr. Cheng’s program has touched the lives of veterans across the country,” said ADA President Daniel J. Klemmedson, D.D.S., M.D. “I am impressed by how she has inspired her dental colleagues, dental students and community members to get involved. The American Dental Association is proud to honor Dr. Cheng for selflessly serving those who have served our country so loyally.”

“It's great to be able to use our skills to give back to those that have made such great sacrifices for our country,” said Warren Libman, D.D.S., a prosthodontist in Bellevue, Wash., involved with the program. “The ADA Humanitarian Award almost seems like it was created with Theresa Cheng in mind, and I cannot think of a more deserving recipient.”

Pacific Dental Services Hits Significant Milestone of 850 Supported Dental Practices Nationwide

Posted on Friday, October 15, 2021

Pacific Dental Services® (PDS) recently announced the grand opening of its 850th supported dental practice, marking yet another significant milestone in the dental support organization’s 27-year history. The newly opened supported practice, Dentists of Eastgate in Cincinnati, Ohio, is the latest in the company’s long line of successful dental practices which has grown PDS into a dental and medical leader in business support services, proven technology and innovation.

“Reaching 850 supported dental practices is an extraordinary achievement,” said Stephen E. Thorne IV, Founder and CEO of Pacific Dental Services. “The success of this company has been due to the hard work, ingenuity and commitment to service from each and every PDS team member. We’re honored that so many owner dentists have trusted us to provide support services to their clinical practices so they can focus on what’s most important – patient care. I look forward to our continued growth as we continue our efforts in helping dentists create healthier, happier patients across the nation.”

Pacific Dental Services has established itself as a national leader, educating others on the link between oral health and overall health – what PDS and its supported practices call the Mouth-Body Connection®. Research shows that harmful bacteria and inflammation in the mouth can indicate and even cause systemic conditions throughout the body. Maladies of the mouth, including periodontal disease, may be linked with other medical conditions including oral cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and more.

PDS-supported practices are also committed to clinical excellence and providing the Perfect Patient Experience® through modern dentistry with advanced, proven technology. These clinical treatment tools are at the forefront of oral and whole-body health care and include CEREC® CAD/CAM same-day crowns, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and digital X-rays, soft tissue diode lasers, salivary diagnostics and the VELscope® oral cancer screening system.

Furthermore, Pacific Dental Services was the first dental support organization in the world to implement Epic®, the most widely used comprehensive health records system, into supported practices. Through Epic, dental practices can easily exchange patient data with health care providers for improved patient care. Integrated health records provide a better understanding of a patient’s overall health, allowing providers to more effectively design a treatment plan to achieve and maintain optimal well-being. This also allows patients to view their acute, primary and dental health records all in one place. This powerful tool helps connect what is happening in their mouth with the rest of their body, leading to better overall health for the patient.

In addition, PDS recently launched a one-of-a-kind dental-medical practice in support of whole-body health with the opening of three practices – general dentistry, pediatric dentistry and medical care – in one convenient location in Henderson, Nevada. This innovative health care concept increases access to comprehensive care and enables patients to be seen by clinicians who understand the Mouth-Body Connection. The integrated approach offers patients a holistic strategy to their health care through a variety of services, including primary medical care, oral health care for adult and pediatric patients, salivary testing, preventative medicine, chronic disease management and more.

About Pacific Dental Services

Founded in 1994, Pacific Dental Services (PDS) is one of the country’s leading dental support organizations, providing supported autonomy that enables dentists to concentrate on clinical excellence and the highest levels of cost-effective comprehensive patient care. PDS originated the Private Practice+® model to enable dentists to focus on their passion: serving patients. Spry Toothpaste Announces New, Improved Formula

Posted on Thursday, October 14, 2021

Spry toothpaste (Xlear Inc.) announced a new, more effective formula based on new research. A new study, published in the Journal of Dentistry, concludes the combination of fluoride and nanosized trimetaphosphate (TMP) more effectively hardens teeth against damage and decay than fluoride alone.

Studies show poor dental hygiene is linked to increase risks of cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity and even infectious disease illnesses. Stronger teeth, and enhanced gum health, are critical to overall wellness.

“One of the best and easiest ways to stay healthy is to use a more effective toothpaste for maintaining your teeth and oral health. An oral care regime that includes TMP to further strengthen the enamel and xylitol to reduce the acid creating bacteria is what really works according to peer-reviewed, published research,” says Mark Cannon, DDS, MS, a Professor at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine, in Chicago.

The Study concludes: The TMP toothpaste “promoted a greater protective effect against enamel demineralization and significantly affected the composition of biofilm formed in situ compared to [1100 ppm fluoride] toothpaste.” As reflected in the chart at illustration A, the TMP/Fluoride compound makes teeth harder at a much greater enamel depth than other toothpastes, including fluoride toothpaste. The Study also found that TMP: “raise[s] fluoride and led to higher calcium in [tooth] enamel”; reduced the cariogenicity and increased calcium and phosphate in the biofilm (the bacterial colonies of the mouth); and, “provide[d] toothpastes with less contribution to fluoride intake in children.”

For decades, Americans have relied on fluoride—in our water, in toothpaste—to help prevent tooth decay, harden teeth, improve dental health, and enhance overall wellness. We use fluoride to the point where 40% of our teenagers have fluorosis: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/us-says-too-much-fluoride-in-water/.

In addition, the CDC has warned health providers to limit the use of fluoride due to the shocking data that more than 38% of children consume too much fluoride toothpaste: https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/68/wr/mm6804a3.htm. “Analysis of 2013–2016 data found that >38% of children aged 3–6 years used more toothpaste than that recommended by CDC and other professional organizations.”

In addition to fluoride, Spry includes xylitol, erythritol, and nano trimetaphosphate (nTMP). Xylitol is a five-carbon sugar, a natural carbohydrate that occurs freely in plants (for example, in fruits, such as blueberries, strawberries and plums) and is produced in the human body from Vitamin C and by other natural pathways.

The Journal of Dentistry study shows that the new ingredients in Spry toothpaste are significantly more effective than typical fluoride toothpastes,” says Nathan Jones, CEO of Xlear, the maker of new, more effective Spry. “Brush your way to better health with Spry,” Jones concluded.

Spry is available at leading retailers across the nation, including Wegmans, The Vitamin Shoppe, Sprouts Farmers Markets, Natural Grocers, and most all Natural market retailers. It can also be purchased online, including on Amazon.

Overjet and New England Family Dentistry Partner to Bring Artificial Intelligence to over 50 Dental Practices

Posted on Thursday, October 14, 2021

Helping dentists deliver the best patient care and education

New England Family Dentistry and Overjet (www.Overjet.ai) today announced a partnership to bring Overjet's industry-leading dental artificial intelligence (AI) software to the dental support organization's network of over 50 dental clinics in New England. Overjet's Clinical Intelligence Platform combines insights from real-time dental AI analysis and existing practice management software data to support clinical and business teams.

"Our team regularly invests in training and tools to improve patient care across our network of clinics," said Dr. Patrick Assioun, DMD, CEO of New England Family Dentistry. "After months of use, we were impressed by Overjet's ability to support and guide our clinical providers which ultimately helps them deliver consistent and high quality patient care. AI has already had a great impact in businesses and medicine, and dentistry is no different. AI is the future of dentistry, and Overjet is the leader in the field. From the hygienist to the dentist to leadership, Overjet's dental AI gives the team new data and insights to deliver the best dental care."

Overjet's dental AI technology is built on years of R&D and testing by machine learning scientists, software engineers, and dentists. Earlier this year, Overjet received FDA clearance for its Dental Assist product, the first dental AI company to receive such a clearance. Overjet has made rapid inroads with dental insurers, counting as customers 16 major carriers who serve over 73 million Americans. The company plans for its technology to soon support shared reimbursement standards between providers and payers, solving a major pain point for dentists.

"New England Family Dentistry is at the vanguard of improving dental care," said Dr. Wardah Inam, PhD, CEO and co-founder of Overjet. "We're honored to work with such a patient-focused and forward-thinking dental team. Our partnership is driven by a shared belief that supporting dentists with AI technology will lead to the best patient health outcomes."

Today's partnership with New England Family Dentistry comes on the heels of other significant developments for Overjet. Last month, the company announced it had raised $27 million in Series A financing to address significant customer demand and accelerate new product development.

OraPharma Launches First-Of-Its-Kind MyPerioHealth™ Patient Education Application For Periodontal Disease

Posted on Thursday, October 14, 2021

OraPharma, a leading oral care company of Bausch Health Companies Inc. (NYSE.TSX:BHC), today announced the U.S. launch of the MyPerioHealth™ app, a first-of-its kind interactive oral health educational tool that allows patients in conjunction with their dental professionals a quick and easy way to understand the stage and grade of periodontal disease on a single, digital platform at the point of care.

“The MyPerioHealth™ education app was designed as a resource for dental professionals when using the Periodontal Staging and Grading Guidelines established by the American Academy of Periodontology to help encourage dialogue and offer an interactive oral health assessment in a patient friendly, portable way,” said Dinesh Guglani, vice president and general manager, OraPharma. “By responding to a series of short questions, a patient and their dental care professional can obtain a wealth of important information regarding the patient’s periodontal health status, including the stage and grade, which are vital for treatment planning and determining the maintenance interval to help manage the disease.”

The AAP Guidelines are intended for patients who have already been diagnosed with periodontitis. The MyPerioHealth™ app complements manual staging and grading by streamlining data collection and automating calculations using the American Academy of Periodontology guidelines. The app will help increase patients’ awareness of gum disease by encouraging dialogue and collaboration between dental professionals and their patients.

“The MyPerioHealth™ app will help enhance the understanding of periodontal disease by providing patients with the ability to have greater understanding and ownership of their disease. Armed with their periodontal score and the ramifications of unchecked periodontal disease, we believe patients will be more accepting of the treatment recommendations they receive from their doctors.” Guglani continued.

Designed for use on a tablet or cell phone, the MyPerioHealth™ app is available on both iOS and Android platforms. It can be downloaded from the Google Play Store, Apple App Store or Amazon Appstore. A web-based version can also be accessed at www.myperiohealth.com.
