Dr. Duane Keller of Perio Protect to Speak at CDA Presents 2016

Posted on Wednesday, April 20, 2016

Perio Protect President and Chief Scientific Officer Duane C. Keller, DMD will be speaking on Friday, May 13, from 8am to 10:30am on Perio Tray® usage, with a presentation to dental professionals entitled "Kill 'em Quick, Dead, and Often." The meeting will be in room 304 in the Anaheim Convention Center.

Highlights of the presentation: Kill 'em Quick, Dead and Often: Managing Biofilms for a Firm Gingival Foundation

Gum disease is hard to manage because patients can’t do a good job maintaining their health at home. Toothbrush, rinse, and floss just don’t get deep enough to address the bacterial regrowth that occurs minutes after professional treatment is completed in the dental office. The Perio Tray® from Perio Protect can help. The sealed tray delivers oxidizing and oxygenating agents deep into periodontal pockets, and patients use it for just minutes each day. Research shows statistically significant reductions in bleeding and pocketing when prescription tray delivery is combined with scaling. Case studies explain how the special delivery is incorporated into treatment plans.

Learn the science behind this technique to help your patients get better results. When you treat the cause of the disease not only do you get better results, you also have faster, more comfortable future cleanings; fresher breath; whiter teeth; and beautiful pink, healthy gums.

If you plan to attend CDA this May, be sure to register for Dr. Keller’s course. You will be ready to put your new knowledge to work immediately after the presentation.

About the presenter:

When Dr. Duane C. Keller discovered how well the Perio Tray® delivery of medication worked with his own patients, he originally thought the antibiotics delivered in the custom trays were at least as effective as the peroxide gel he prescribed. After all, science clearly showed that antibiotics were the answer to bacterial infections. Except….when they weren't. Antibiotics placed in pockets without peroxide rarely healed as well.

Dr. Keller studied the problem from a microbiology perspective and collaborated with leading specialists so that dental microbiology became the basis of his periodontal treatment protocols. The results speak for themselves.

Dr. Keller graduated from Washington University School of Dental Medicine and has maintained a successful private practice in St. Louis, MO since 1976. In addition to general dentistry, Dr. Keller works with physicians and physical therapists to provide non-surgical treatment for TMD patients in chronic pain.

As the Chief Scientific Officer for Perio Protect, LLC and a former educational officer for the I.A.O., Dr. Keller has been lecturing to national and international audiences for over twenty years. He has published more than 35 articles in professional journals, most recently an article in Cardiovascular System, and has patented numerous dental appliances and treatment methodologies. In 2004, the FDA cleared his Perio Tray® for the placement of solutions in periodontal pockets.

Dental Carious Lesion Management and Recommendations on Less Invasive Approaches

Posted on Wednesday, April 20, 2016

Alexandria, Va., USA – The International and American Associations for Dental Research (IADR/AADR) have published an issue of Advances in Dental Research on the International Caries Consensus Collaboration’s (ICCC) recommendations for carious lesion management and related terminology, developed from evidence-led consensus. Jo Frencken, Radboud University Medical Center, Nijmegen, Netherlands; JDR Associate Editor Nicola Innes, University of Dundee, Scotland; and Falk Schwendicke, Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany, served as guest editors of this special issue.

Although the prevalence of dental caries has decreased in many countries over the last three decades, it remains one of the most prevalent diseases worldwide, burdening billions of people and generating significant global healthcare costs. The management of carious lesions should be guided by evidence-based, patient-centered recommendations founded on agreement between professionals, easing clinical decision-making.

Various terms are used to describe the clinical management of carious lesions, which has contributed to a lack of clarity in scientific literature. The Advances article titled “Managing Carious Lesions: Consensus Recommendations on Terminology” by Nicola Innes et al presents ICCC recommendations on agreed terms and definitions. A comprehensive list of terms to encompass the full spectrum of carious tissue removal options are presented in the article.

The Advances article titled “Managing Carious Lesions: Consensus Recommendations on Carious Tissue Removal” by Falk Schwendicke et al expounds upon the ICCC’s recommendations that avoid the restorative cycle as long as possible. The first line of treatment to control the disease in carious lesions should be methods aimed at biofilm removal or control (brushing, fluoride, diet). Restorative interventions are indicated only when cavitated carious lesions either are noncleansable or can no longer be sealed to stop the progress of the biofilm-mediated lesion. When a restoration is indicated, the priorities are as follows: preserving healthy and remineralizable tissue; achieving a restorative seal; maintaining pulpal health; and maximizing restoration success. Carious tissue is removed purely to create conditions for long-lasting restorations. Bacterially contaminated or demineralized tissues close to the pulp do not need to be removed. In deeper lesions in teeth with sensible (vital) pulps, preserving pulpal health should be prioritized, while in shallow or moderately deep lesions, restoration longevity becomes more important.

The evidence and, therefore, these recommendations support less invasive carious lesion management, delaying entry to, and slowing down, the restorative cycle by preserving tooth tissue and retaining teeth long-term.

“It is believed that if general recommendations around less invasive and more contemporaneous management of carious lesions could be drawn up, they could be tailored to all types of patients, countries, healthcare remuneration settings, dental care professionals and dental education systems,” said Guest Editor and JDR Associate Editor Nicola Innes. “Understanding that we do not need to remove all carious tissue to achieve an optimal outcome is a big change for the profession. The recommendations and terminology publications in this special issue address the lack of international guidance on carious lesion management that is causing considerable uncertainty for the dental profession.”

A companion podcast interview with Nicola Innes, Falk Schwendicke and Jo Frencken is available at https://jdr.sagepub.com/site//misc/Index/Podcasts.xhtml. Please visit https://adr.sagepub.com to read the May issue of Advances in Dental Research.

VOCO Releases First all Ceramic-Based Direct Bulk-Fill Restorative

Posted on Friday, April 15, 2016

VOCO is excited to introduce Admira Fusion x-tra, the world’s first ALL CERAMIC-based direct bulk-fill restorative material. After almost two decades of intensive research and development, VOCO has created the first ever nano-ORMOCER® through the innovative “FUSION” of VOCO’s proven Nano-Hybrid and ORMOCER® (ORganically MOdified CERamic) technologies.

As a nano-ORMOCER® Admira Fusion x-tra’s chemistry base is formed by silicon oxide, making up both the glass fillers as well as the ceramic resin matrix, a first of its kind. This unique “Pure Silicate Technology” offers several remarkable advantages including up to 50% lower polymerization shrinkage (1.25% by volume) than today’s conventional composites, as well as up to 50% lower shrinkage stress; two key physical properties as it relates to bulk-fill restoratives. Admira Fusion x-tra has a 4mm depth of cure for fast and long lasting posterior restorations and is available in one universal shade. Admira Fusion’s nano-particulate amplifies its chameleon effect, enhancing its ability to adapt and blend to surrounding tooth structure compared to conventional composites.

The ORMOCER® matrix used within Admira® Fusion x-tra makes the material highly biocompatible, as it contains none of today’s classic monomers (BisGMA [BPA], TEGDMA, UDMA, etc). With an 84 % (by weight) inorganic filler content, the light-cured, radiopaque Admira Fusion x-tra has excellent strength and wear properties. Additionally it is compatible with all conventional bonding agents and offers homogeneous non-sticky handling.

Benco Dental One of the Top 20 Best Workplaces in Health Care

Posted on Friday, April 15, 2016

Great Places to Work® and Fortune name Benco Dental

One of the Top 20 Best Workplaces in Health Care

PITTSTON, PA — Benco Dental is one of the 2016 Best Workplaces in Health Care, according to the global research and consulting firm Great Place to Work® and Fortune Magazine.

Benco Dental ranked 20 on the list, based on employees’ assessments of the pride they take in their jobs, the camaraderie they experience with coworkers, and the trust they feel toward Benco Dental’s leaders.

This year’s Best Workplaces in Health Care stand out for creating workplaces that employees say make them feel good about what they do and close to their coworkers. Those feelings come despite employees working in an industry under pressure to implement new regulations, curb rising costs, and absorb technology advances while also caring for patients.

“Employees at the Best Workplaces in Health Care are working in a family-like atmosphere where everyone’s got each other’s back and they’re working toward a common goal of taking care of people,” says Michael C. Bush, CEO of Great Place to Work®. “And the organizations that foster these inspiring, collegial cultures benefit by becoming talent magnets.”

The family feel creates a competitive advantage in recruiting and retaining employees at a time when many organizations in the industry can’t fill jobs fast enough. In 2015, voluntary turnover in health care organizations hit 14.4%,according to CompData Surveys, but best health care workplaces are doing better at hanging onto workers, including in-demand positions such as nursing.

“At Benco Dental, we’re proud of how our associates work together to provide products, equipment and services to our customers, which improves the quality of dental care across the nation,” said George Rable, Vice President, Culture and People for Benco Dental. “Thank you to all the associates for everything they do to make Benco a great place to work,” added Rable.

Health care institutions are hierarchical by nature, and work groups at some must compete against each other for limited resources. At the best workplaces, however, employees say they feel like a cohesive unit no matter what their job, and can count on coworkers to cooperate. The vast majority describe their workplaces are “friendly,” and feel like an equal member of the organization regardless of their position.

To create the list, Great Place to Work® surveyed close to 34,500 employees at health care organizations, including hospital systems, home health care providers, national health care associations, and medical products distributors.

Benco Dental and the other winning companies were selected based on responses to Great Place to Work®’s Trust Index© employee assessment survey. Survey questions assessed co-workers' feelings on camaraderie and pride on the job, as well as how they felt about other workplace issues including management, communication, work-life balance, and compensation.

The Best Workplaces in Health Care ranking is part of a series of rankings by Great Place to Work® and Fortune based upon employee survey feedback from Great Place to Work®-certified organizations.
