Calibra®: Cements That Meet All Your Indirect Restorative Needs

For the past 25 years, Sam Simos, DDS, has been practicing restorative and cosmetic dentistry in his two separate practice offices in the greater Chicago area. Like all dentists, Simos needs cements he can trust and rely on when performing indirect restorations.

“I have been heavily using Calibra® Ceram cement since its introduction into the market,” says Simos. “I use Calibra Ceram on my all-ceramic restorations as well as CAD/CAM restorations.”

Dentsply Sirona Restorative’s Calibra Ceram can be used on glass-ceramics, such as lithium disilicate. For his zirconia applications, Simos also uses Calibra® Universal. Both these products are part of Dentsply Sirona’s family of definitive cements for indirect restorations.

With Calibra Ceram, a self-cure activator and mixing of primers are not needed when used in conjunction with Prime & Bond Elect® adhesive.

“Lithium disilicate is primarily what we all use for CAD/CAM crowns, and it is a wonderful restorative product. Calibra Ceram really lends itself well to that, because we don’t need to worry about a primer. That’s the neat thing about this; it’s so easy. I don’t have to worry about different materials. It’s not a chemistry set. It’s just one product that I use with my one adhesive product, Dentsply Sirona’s Prime & Bond Elect, which are perfectly suited for each other,” asserts Simos.

Besides being easy to use, this cement was designed to provide superior strength. Simos says, “One of the things that this cement brings to the table, is not only the pedigree of the Calibra Cement family, but also the strength. I don’t want a lot of debonding, and one of the problems is that because we have gone from gold and changed the paradigm of our profession so quickly, many of these luting cements haven’t kept up. So you have to treat all these new substrates differently.

“What Calibra Ceram has allowed me to do is not worry about the strength; the strength is there, and I don’t have to stress about it. Once I use it, I can depend on the restoration to be there for many years to come for my patients.”

Another attractive quality of Calibra Ceram is the wide tack-cure window of up to 10 seconds (cure at 5 seconds each side for a total of 10 seconds) and extended 45-second gel phase, which allows practitioners the time they need for a thorough, effective, and easy cleanup. With this solution, stressful, rushed cleanups are a thing of the past.

“I can cure each side for 5 seconds and have a wide window of this gel phase that is built into the product, enabling me to have a really nice, simple cleanup. This product is not only easy to use, but it’s easy to clean,” Simos reiterates. Because there isn’t a separate agent, this cement decreases postoperative sensitivity, he adds.

Not to be overshadowed, Calibra Universal cement offers one-step cementation, which means no additional etchant or adhesive is needed. The product offers clinicians a host of advantages, including high immediate 6-minute bond strength, beautiful esthetics, and the speed of tack curing without the stress of over-curing. This makes excess cement removal a snap.

“In the posterior, we tend to have a lot of issues getting a light to the restoration. This allows for flexibility without the need for bonding. Calibra has been a gold standard in the luting field for years,” says Simos.

He explains that dentists have a greater margin of success with the Calibra family of definitive cements. “Dentsply Sirona has created this family of Calibra solutions. With Calibra Ceram, Calibra Universal, and Calibra Veneer, I really think it’s a home run with the bases loaded,” Simos says. “You can’t go wrong with having all three of these luting cements on your shelf. In critical situations that we all face, having these chairside is key.”
