This special Compendium eBook puts the spotlight on two topics in oral surgery: papillae-sparing incisions and surgical complications from dietary supplements. Each topic is explored in a continuing education (CE) article. Download to earn 4 FREE CEU now!

CE 1: Using Papillae-Sparing Incisions in the Esthetic Zone to Restore Form and Function
Gary Greenstein, DDS, MS; and Dennis Tarnow, DDS
This first CE article examines the intricacies of a papillae-sparing incision technique for implant placement. It is not a new technique; however, it is effective in preventing interdental tissue recession and facilitating gingival architecture restoration. As shown in several cases presented, papillae-sparing incisions can be used to accomplish diverse tasks. The incisions described are characterized by bilaterally retaining segments of papillae adjacent to an edentate area when a pedicle flap is elevated.

CE 2: The Role of Dietary Supplements in Postsurgical Bleeding: An Update for the Practitioner
Alessandro Grisa, DDS; Salvatore Florio, DDS; Elisabetta Bellia, DDS, PhD; Sang-Choon Cho, DDS; and Stuart J. Froum, DDS
The second CE concerns a topic that can potentially lead to complications in almost any surgical procedure. As more adults take dietary supplements and may fail to report it, dentists must be aware of the potential complications that may occur as a result of surgery, such as the increased risk of bleeding. When complications occur, healthcare practitioners may face serious issues, such as compromised patient health, diminished patient outcomes, damaged professional reputation, and even legal concerns. These are all potential risks we might be taking by not asking our patients one simple question: Do you use supplements? This article reminds us of the responsibilities we have as dental professionals to do no harm.
