CE 1: Using Surgically Facilitated Orthodontic Therapy as a Tool for Optimal Interdisciplinary Results
Richard D. Roblee, DDS, MS; Scotty L. Bolding, DDS, MS; and Jason M. Landers, DDS, MS
In the first CE, a team of authors led by Richard D. Roblee, DDS, explain the use of surgically facilitated orthodontic therapy (SFOT) as a tool for optimal interdisciplinary results. Limitations in traditional orthodontic techniques and the length of requisite treatment may affect the willingness of both the provider and patient to accept orthodontics as part of an overall treatment plan. The authors explain how two types of SFOT can help to resolve these issues. The first type, corticotomy, is used to cause bone demineralization that accelerates dentoalveolar tooth movement. The second type consists of single- or multiple-tooth osteotomies combined with the principles of distraction osteogenesis to rapidly grow hard and soft tissues, thereby enabling changes in alveoloskeletal relationships.

CE 2: Managing Dentoalveolar Ridge Defects for Implant Site Development: An Interdisciplinary Approach
Brian S. Vence, DDS; George A. Mandelaris, DDS, MS; and David P. Forbes DDS, PhD
The second CE describes an interdisciplinary approach to management of dentoalveolar ridge defects for implant site development. Lead author Brian S. Vence, DDS, and team describe interdisciplinary management of a severe alveolar ridge defect to enable optimal implant placement and minimally invasive dentistry for an ideal functional and esthetic outcome.
