How to Grow Within and Beyond the Operatory

Danielle Avila, RDH, BSDH, and Laura Bettencourt, RDH, BSDH

If you are like many dental hygienists, you might feel confined within four walls, particularly when continually focusing on "cleaning teeth." As dental professionals, we want to emphasize that there is more within and beyond the operatory. If you are looking to elevate your hygiene career to the next level, here's a list of five steps you can take now so that you will grow and thrive.

Are you ready to take your hygiene career to the next level? Investing in a coach or finding a mentor will create accountability and guidance that will accelerate your results. Utilize these five tips, and watch your journey toward success unfold.

1. Discover your passion. The first step to success is figuring out what truly ignites your passion within the field. Whether it's a specific dental specialty or patient care approach, align your career with what you love most. Passion fuels motivation.

2. Join your local ADHA. Getting involved in your local American Dental Hygienists' Association chapter is a fantastic way to connect with fellow professionals, stay updated on industry trends, and access valuable resources. It is all about building a supportive community.

3. Network. Networking is a superpower. Attend conferences, seminars, and online events. Connect with peers, mentors, coaches, and potential collaborators. Building a strong professional network can open doors you never knew existed.

4. Focus on what you can control. In the ever-changing dental industry, some things are simply out of your hands. Instead of dwelling on things that are beyond your control, channel your energy into daily habits and small wins. Consistency and dedication lead to significant career gains.

5. Invest in yourself. Your growth is worth the investment. Consider continuing education courses, workshops, or coaching to refine your skills and expand your knowledge. Remember, the more you invest in yourself, the more valuable you become to your patients and your profession.
