Extension of the Integrated Ceramill CAD/CAM Workflow: Digital Solutions Lead the Way into the Dental Practice

Posted on Tuesday, July 27, 2021

With its Ceramill Direct Restoration Solution (DRS), Amann Girrbach is extending its integrated digital workflow to the dentist, thus closing the existing communication gap between the dental practice and the laboratory. In this process, both partners contribute their core competencies to provide patients with definitive and functional dentures even more quickly and with less complication—smaller units are also possible on the same day, depending on the local distance between the two partners.

Depending on the type of collaboration desired, three team workflows are available in combination with the corresponding Ceramill DRS Kits. In each case, the central basis of these workflows is the new AG.Live digital platform, which offers both infrastructure and patient case management at a realizable consistency and efficiency that was previously unattainable and takes the flow of information and work between the practice and the laboratory to an entirely new level. The Ceramill DRS Connection Kit acts as the basic and entry-level variant, with which dentists and laboratories can already take full advantage of digitization. It consists of the intraoral scanner, the Ceramill Map DRS, the associated scan software and the connection to AG.Live. Any order data including all the required information can therefore be shared seamlessly and in real time with the laboratory via AG.Live. This eliminates the need for handwritten job sheets and conventional impressions. All that is necessary is a single physical transport: getting the restoration to the practice for insertion in the patient's mouth, even on the same day in the case of simple restorations. This leads to a better dental experience for the patient and ultimately attracts new patients to the practice, thus generating more orders for the laboratory.

And if the preferred material is zirconia, the High-Speed Zirconia Kit, consisting of the Zolid DRS high-speed sintering zirconia and a corresponding Ceramill Therm DRS sintering furnace, can optimally support the laboratory in fabricating straightforward zirconia restorations on the same day.

To provide patients with dentures even quicker in a further step, the system can be expanded in the dental practice with the Ceramill DRS Production Kit at a later stage. This allows simple restorations to be fabricated in the practice and placed in the patient's mouth in a single session.

All Ceramill DRS Kits can be pre-ordered as of now in Germany. The High Speed Zirconia Kit is already available to laboratories. Early bird DRS users benefit from particularly close support from the DRS specialists at Amann Girrbach. Further information and the option of pre-ordering can be found at https://expo.aglivecon.digital/en/planets/ceramill-drs.

High school student presents on oral-health impact profile 5: analyzing a private practice adult population's distribution

Posted on Monday, July 26, 2021

Hiba Nasir, Wayzata High School, Plymouth, Minn., presented the poster "Oral-Health Impact Profile 5: Analyzing A Private Practice Adult Population's Distribution" at the virtual 99th General Session & Exhibition of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), held in conjunction with the 50th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 45th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR), on July 21-24, 2021.

Nasir, a high school student, along with Sheila Riggs, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, USA, performed an observational study to understand the distribution of the Oral-Health Impact Profile (OHIP5) scores in a general adult population that seeks care in a private, suburban dental clinic. Participants were adult patients seeking care in a clinic who were administered the OHIP5 survey upon arrival. This survey was filled out as a paper copy and additionally included demographic questions (race, ethnicity, gender and age) for additional analysis.

A chi-square test for homogeneity was performed and determined that there was not a difference between the score distributions between females and males. Understanding the distribution of OHIP5 scores between men and women of an adult population seeking care in a private, suburban dental clinic allows for dental practitioners to further improve the care that they provide and allows for them to enhance their treatment plans.

Strategies for disseminating guidance to dentists during the COVID-19 pandemic

Posted on Friday, July 23, 2021

Alexandria, Va., USA - Ruth Lipman, American Dental Association (ADA) Science and Research Institute, Chicago, Ill., U.S., presented the poster "Strategies for Disseminating Guidance to Dentists during the COVID-19 Pandemic" at the virtual 99th General Session & Exhibition of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), held in conjunction with the 50th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 45th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR), on July 21-24, 2021.

Rapidly formulated, actionable infection risk mitigation strategies for dental care professionals were needed during the initial acceleration phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Between March 2020 and February 2021, the content developed by the ADA to address dentists' needs for COVID-19 related practice guidance has been cataloged. Insight about the strategies and approaches to their formulation, intended use, publication/posting date and utility as assessed by number of downloads and visits from ADA.org was evaluated with respect to the chronology of the pandemic.

The ADA established a centralized hub online to disseminate the latest COVID-19 evidence, policy and guidance. In April 2020, the ADA received more than 2,360 COVID-19 related member queries. Initial ADA guidance to mitigate virus transmission relied on information about safety considerations extrapolated from medical rather than dental settings to produce several decision algorithms (16,529 downloads) and a reference document (22,176 downloads) citing supporting information sources.

The initial guidance algorithms were for provision of urgent and emergency care and addressed patient screening, use of professional protective equipment, operatory disinfection and patients' treatment. A companion document that defined urgent and emergency care (58,551 downloads) was reviewed by the ADA Board of Trustees. As restrictions on provision of dental care were lifted, increased member volunteer engagement was considered prudent to better ensure the relevance and feasibility of the guidance informing about a more comprehensive range of dental care. The resultant return-to-work toolkit (32,441 downloads) has been accessed more than 640,370 times.

This presentation summarizes and evaluates the clinical guidance and other evidence-based resources developed for dentists and patients by the American Dental Association (ADA) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Longitudinal serological and vaccination responses to SARS-COV-2 in dental professionals

Posted on Thursday, July 22, 2021

Alexandria, Va., USA - Iain Chapple, University of Birmingham, England, presented the oral session "Longitudinal Serological and Vaccination Responses to SARS-COV-2 in Dental Professionals" at the virtual 99th General Session & Exhibition of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), held in conjunction with the 50th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 45th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR), on July 21-24, 2021.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted dental professionals, who are thought to be at high occupational risk of infection. The aim of this study was to determine the magnitude, persistence and neutralizing capacity of serum antibody responses to the SARS-COV-2 spike glycoprotein at baseline (3-months following first wave), 3- and 6-months in an observational cohort of United Kingdom dental professionals, and the IgG threshold for protection from re-infection.

Participants provided baseline venous blood samples and the total antibody response (combined IgG, A and M), and individual isotype response against the SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein were measured. The neutralizing ability of antibodies was determined using a plaque reduction micro-neutralization assay.

Baseline seroprevalence was 16.3%. Seropositivity was retained in 73% of participants who returned 3-months post-baseline and 72% of participants who returned at 6-months, prior to their vaccination. Seropositivity arising following natural infection during the first wave, conferred a 74% risk reduction for re-infection during follow-up (9.6% seronegative, vs. 2.8% seropositive). The results show that natural infection with SARS-COV-2 leads to persistent, neutralizing and protective serological responses in over 70% of DPs 9-months post-infection (6-months post-baseline).
