Advanced 3D X-ray System Receives Oral Healthcare Industry’s Highest Honor

Posted on Thursday, June 20, 2019

Carestream Dental, a global digital dental technology company, is proud to announce that its newest 3D X-ray system, the CS 9600, has received a 2019 Cellerant Best of Class Technology Award, which acknowledges manufacturers that are driving the discussion as to how oral healthcare practices will operate now and in the future.

Transforming Dentistry

The CS 9600 is a multifunctional machine that can capture 2D X-rays and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT)—more commonly known as 3D—scans; scan objects such as traditional dental impressions or plaster models; and even scan patients’ faces to superimpose on their X-rays. This high-tech system can be used by all oral healthcare professionals from endodontists, who consider the smallest details of root canal morphology, to oral and maxillofacial surgeons, who handle complicated trauma cases.

For the past decade, digital 3D technology has been infiltrating the dentist’s office. Overall, digital X-rays can be safer than conventional methods by using a lower radiation dose and by giving doctors more confidence in their diagnoses and treatment plans. However, the CS 9600 was designed to take digital dentistry even further by incorporating the latest technology, such as intuitive smart sensors and machine learning for enhanced performance.

“When we started the CS 9600 project, we spent months researching the pain points and unmet needs of doctors and staff to ensure we’d deliver a best-in-class CBCT,” Stephane Varlet, lead engineer on the CS 9600’s development, said. “We focused on clinical experience and on functions that would make doctors’ and assistants’ work easier. The goal of the CS 9600 was to be smart enough to guide users through the process of capturing the perfect image, yet easy enough that they could achieve their goal on the first try.”

Simplifying Technology

In the past, operator error when taking X-rays could result in unusable images, meaning patients would have to be exposed to more radiation during a second exam. However, the CS 9600’s smart features virtually eliminate the need for retakes. Video cameras capture the patient’s face live and display it on an integrated SmartPad touchscreen. Then, interactive guides are projected onto the face and walks the user through the positioning process. The system can even detect when the wrong accessory is inserted for the type of exam selected and recommend the correct one, further ensuring users get the right image the first time.

The CS 9600’s advanced technology doesn’t stop with image capture and diagnostic tools. CS UpStream turns the CS 9600 into a connected device that sends data back to Carestream Dental. The system’s historical behavior is easily accessible to the Carestream Dental support team to prevent downtime and maximize system availability, so practices can see and treat more patients, more efficiently.

Changing Lives

The patient is at the forefront of the CS 9600’s design. The system’s high-power tube allows clinicians to acquire images at 120 kV for enhanced image quality without increasing dose to patient as compared to 90 kV acquisition. CS Face Scan, which captures images of the patient’s face and superimposes it onto a CBCT scan, helps him or her visualize final outcomes and makes it easier to accept treatment. An optional integrated seat provides added comfort and stability during patient exams or can be easily rotated to the side to accommodate patients in wheelchairs.

Ultimately, the CS 9600’s intelligent interface, highly accurate images and advanced software changes patients’ lives by getting them on the road to recovery and a restored smile sooner.

The CS 9600 was selected to receive the 2019 Cellerant Best of Class Technology Award by a panel of the most prominent technology leaders in dentistry: Paul Feuerstein, D.M.D., technology editor for Dentistry Today, John Flucke, D.D.S., technology editor for Dental Products Report, Marty Jablow, D.M.D., known as America’s technology coach, Pamela Maragliano-Muniz, D.M.D, editor-in-chief of Inside Dental Hygiene, Chris Salierno, D.D.S., editor-in-chief of Dental Economics, and Lou Shuman, D.M.D., CAGS, founder and creator of the Cellerant Best of Class Technology Award.

Sugar industry's use of dietitians to influence dental professionals, 1974-1978

Posted on Thursday, June 20, 2019

Alexandria, Va., USA - At the 97th General Session & Exhibition of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), held in conjunction with the 48th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR), Ifunanya Okeke, University of California, San Francisco, USA, gave an oral presentation on "Sugar Industry's Use of Dietitians to Influence Dental Professionals, 1974-1978." The IADR/AADR/CADR General Session & Exhibition is held at the Vancouver Convention Centre West Building in Vancouver, BC, Canada from June 19-22, 2019.

In 1975, the U.S. Sugar Association created the Regional Nutritional Information Program with the goal of enlisting dietitians to spread positive messages about sugar and health. This study describes the Regional Nutritional Information Program and its impact on dental professionals.

Internal U.S. Sugar Association documents related to operations, regulatory activities and scientific research from 1974 to 1978 were reviewed for relevance to the Regional Nutritional Information Program. Fifty-nine documents were identified for further review and emerging themes were identified.

The results show that the Regional Nutritional Information Program was an essential component of the U.S. Sugar Association's public relations campaign and was designed to portray the safety and benefits of sugar in a balanced diet. The target audiences included universities, public schools, professional associations, and the media. U.S. Sugar Association dietitians hosted educational workshops, incorporated U.S. Sugar Association literature into libraries and curricula, monitored professional and consumer attitudes toward sugar and made media appearances. Their dietitians interacted with dental professionals by documenting their attitudes toward sugar, influencing a professional conference to include pro-sugar speakers, developing a media program that minimized sugar's role in tooth decay and by monitoring and criticizing dentist-researchers examining the high-sugar content of breakfast cereals.

The authors conclude that the U.S. Sugar Association used the Regional Nutritional Information Program to counter dentists' anti-sugar messages at professional meetings and in the media with positive messages about sugar and suggests that the public health community should consider corporate relationships in the dietetic profession as potentially detrimental to oral health.

This oral presentation, #0270, was held on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. in Room 118 of the Vancouver Convention Centre West Building, Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Guidelines for the Use of Denture Adhesives

Posted on Thursday, June 20, 2019

New global guidelines have been announced to tackle the lack of advice in the best use of denture adhesives with complete edentulous patients. Developed by a global task force, the new science-based guidelines have been announced today by the Oral Health Foundation and have been made possible because of a project sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare.

The research project reinforces the patient benefits of using denture adhesives for ‘well-fitting’ dentures. These benefits include improved retention and stability, improved confidence and comfort and reduction or elimination of food debris beneath the denture.

The White Paper entitled “Guidelines for the Use of Denture Adhesives and their benefits for Oral and General Health,” has been published by a group of academic experts. The panel undertook a comprehensive review of existing guidance for best use of denture adhesives.

David Felton, Dean and Professor of The University of Mississippi Medical Center states, “There is a lack of scientific evidence on the best use of denture adhesives for edentulous patients, including their application, removal and frequency of use. With that in mind, the Oral Health Foundation recently convened a panel of global experts to review existing evidence and practices and have developed a white paper entitled, “Guidelines for the Use of Denture Adhesives and their Benefits for Oral and General Health.” While additional research is still required, the Oral Health Foundation White Paper on denture adhesives provides guidance and a level of confidence to dental health professionals on when and how to recommend denture adhesives to denture wearers, to improve performance of well-fitting dentures.”

The task force included experts from the UK, USA, Greece, Japan and Switzerland and was convened to reflect the global need for advice for denture wearers given the aging population around the world. By 2050, there is expected to be 2 billion people aged 60 years or older in the world – this represents 16% of the population and is triple the figure for this age group in 2010.1

Dr. Nigel Carter OBE, Chief Executive of the Oral Health Foundation comments, “the current lack of guidance on the use of denture adhesives may mean that denture wearers are left confused. The evidence is clear; using an adhesive can provide benefits for patients with best-fitting dentures both in terms of function, confidence and comfort. These new guidelines will give dental professionals the confidence to know how and when to recommend denture adhesives for maximum patient benefit.”

The simple steps for application of a denture adhesive can be summarised as follows:

Make sure your denture is clean and dry. Put a small amount of denture adhesive cream onto it. (You should only need to do this once a day.)

Put the denture into your mouth and firmly close the mouth for a couple of seconds. If the adhesive cream overflows you have used too much. Remove any spare adhesive, don’t swallow it. Don’t eat or drink anything for 5 minutes.

Before you sleep, take your denture out. Clean the denture and the inside of your mouth thoroughly to remove any adhesive.

Ask your dentist for a regular appointment so they can check your mouth and dentures.

The guidelines are released during the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) 2019 meeting in Vancouver, Canada which takes place June 19-22 and a webinar will be available for professionals with further background to the project.

The denture adhesive guidelines will complement the white paper on Optimal Care and Maintenance of Full Dentures for Oral and General Health published in 2018 and together form a comprehensive resource on full dentures for dental professionals, care givers, and denture wearers.

CS 3600 Intraoral Scanner Tested to Have Highest Accuracy in Latest Implantology Study

Posted on Wednesday, June 19, 2019

When it comes to placing implants accuracy matters, and the CS 3600 intraoral scanner was found to give the most accurate results during a new study, “Trueness and Precision of Five Intraoral Scanners in the Impressions of Single and Multiple Implants: A Comparative In-Vitro Study.”1

With few peer-reviewed studies evaluating the clinical efficacy of intraoral scanners in implantology, these latest findings from Drs. Francesco Guido Mangano, Uli Hauschild, Giovanni Veronesi, Mario Imburgia, Carlo Mangano and Oleg Admakin compared the trueness and precision of five intraoral scanners and determined which have both accurate and consistent results.

According to the study, the CS 3600 had the best accuracy, while having the fewest triangles making up the meshes in all applications.

“The number of triangles is often misinterpreted to be a measure of acquisition resolution or mesh quality,” Victor Wong, Ph.D., director, research and innovation, Carestream Dental, said. “In fact, by having the best trueness with the smallest number of triangles, the CS 3600 demonstrates the most efficient/optimal mesh generation by placing more triangles in areas with more details, and vice versa, with minimized mesh file size while maintaining accuracy.”

To put the scanners to the test, 10 scans were performed by a single digital dentistry expert per indication per intraoral scanner with a zig-zag technique in the same environmental conditions. Two maxilla plaster models were used as a reference: One partially edentulous and one totally edentulous.

In this study, trueness is defined by the difference between the scanned model and the reference model; precision is quantified by the difference between repeatedly scanned models. In both cases, smaller values indicate greater trueness and/or precision. A scanner needs both trueness and precision to be considered accurate.

When scanning a single crown, the CS 3600 was found to have the best trueness (15.2 ±0.8 μm) and the best precision (11.3 ±1.1 μm). The CS 3600 also had the best trueness (23 ±1.1 μm) and the best precision (21 ±1.9 μm) when scanning a partial prosthesis. While scanning a full arch, the CS 3600 had the best trueness (44.9 ±8.9 μm) and had the second-best precision (35.7 ± 4.3), which very closely follows the best precision result (35.6 ± 3.4).

This is not the first time that studies have confirmed the CS 3600’s high performance. In a 2018 study,2 the CS 3600 outperformed other scanners, as well as traditional impressions, in finish line accuracy. Its trueness was confirmed by a 2017 study that tested the accuracy of four intraoral scanners in oral implantology.3
