Antimicrobial technology firm Nobio finalizes investment by aMoon Fund and Dr. Ole Jensen

Posted on Tuesday, July 31, 2018

Nobio Ltd., developer of embedded, long-acting antimicrobial particle technology, today announced the closing of a $3.6 million investment by aMoon Fund and Dr. Ole Jensen. The proprietary, non-soluble Nobio particles feature high anti-microbial activity that does not involve chemical interaction with the microorganisms nor release of any substance, and are designed to have non-toxic and long-lasting effect, unlike soluble antimicrobial substances. Contrary to coatings, Nobio particles are designed to be permanently embedded within a broad range of materials, thereby converting the material into an antibacterial version without changing its properties. The company recently completed development of a line of dental restorative products, including an adhesive and resin-based composites, incorporating the Nobio antimicrobial technology. The investment will fund the regulatory submissions for the dental products, the establishment of a manufacturing facility and market introduction.

“Protecting composite restorations from the harmful effect of oral bacteria in the form of plaque has been a challenge, and Nobio’s technology was specifically designed to address this major, unmet need,” said Nobio CEO Yoram Ashery. “We’re fortunate to have strategic investors like the aMoon Fund and Dr. Jensen, who bring valuable insights and share our vision for the potential of our antimicrobial technology to become a new standard.”

Dental caries (tooth decay) is the most common chronic infection in the world. Composite restorations (tooth-colored fillings) are very popular, but fail primarily due to caries forming at the restoration margins. About two-thirds of procedures are replacements of failed earlier restorations. Replacement dentistry costs $5 billion a year in the U.S. alone.

Nobio is also developing the use of its technology in several high-volume industrial applications as well as medical devices to prevent device-related infections, a major healthcare-associated complication and cost driver. The company has enlisted the services of Cellerant Consulting Group and Norman Hicks Consulting to bring their antimicrobial technology to the U.S.

Nobio has recently been featured in Dental Products Report as an example of what technologies to look forward to in the future. Read about Nobio in The True Science Fiction of Future Dentistry and A composite technology to prevent secondary caries on dentalproductsreport.com

Glidewell Dental opens state-of-the-art education center in Louisville

Posted on Tuesday, July 31, 2018

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (July 19, 2018) – Glidewell Dental, a leading technological innovator in restorative dentistry for over 48 years, has announced the opening of the Glidewell International Technology Center, a new 8,500-square-foot training, education and demonstration center located in Louisville, Ky. This world-class center, which houses a cutting-edge, 40-seat classroom auditorium, provides contemporary, continuing education for dental professionals. It is the second companion center to its flagship West Coast facility located in Irvine, Calif.

With the aim of exploring the complexities of oral rehabilitation and its various treatment modalities, the center’s continuing education program encompasses all the principal methods of challenging, motivating and teaching like-minded clinicians.

“The techniques and materials used in dentistry are ever-evolving and as healthcare professionals, it’s our responsibility to cultivate and be well-informed of those continuous improvements,” said Dr. Neil Park, vice president of clinical affairs at Glidewell Dental. “Our core mission at Glidewell has always been to advance the understanding of proven, fundamental methods for treating patients — and the increased demand for technology-focused education has sparked our expansion to the East Coast. Through this new Louisville-based center, dentists in the eastern half of the United States will be able to more conveniently access our quality continuing education programs without having to travel to Southern California.”

The center debuted with a special grand opening reception on July 12 attended by dentists, dental industry members and members of the local community, including Mayor of Louisville Greg Fischer. In a speech, Mayor Fischer recognized the Glidewell International Technology Center as integral to the Louisville community and surrounding areas.

“Our city congratulates Glidewell Dental on expanding the reach of their valuable work through lifelong learning facilitated at the Glidewell technology center,” he said. “May the work carried out in this space bring forth brighter smiles shining across the world for years to come.”

The event also featured a speech from Jim Glidewell, CDT, founder and CEO of Glidewell Dental, who articulated the company’s vision for the center and garnered excitement for the upcoming curriculum. Hands-on courses and in-depth lectures will focus on all aspects of modern implant and restorative dentistry, including surgical dental implant placement, prosthetic rehabilitation, dental sleep medicine and more. A special acknowledgment was given to the first of the courses to take place at the center.

“The Emergency Implant: Immediate Implant Placement in Extraction Sockets,” taught by Dr. Jack Hahn. A pioneer in the field of implant dentistry, Dr. Hahn, who was present at the reception, has been placing and restoring implants for 48 years. He joins many other hand-picked educators who have carefully crafted curriculum to help doctors become more confident and successful in their practice.

“Faculty and students are brought together by our shared passion for improving lives through oral health,” said Dr. Park. “We are inspired by this opportunity to share what we’ve learned over our nearly five-decade heritage, to bring more affordable, effective and innovative methods of treatment to doctors, to help rebuild smiles and enhance the quality of lives for patients in need. It is our hope that this Louisville education and training center helps doctors in their pursuit of finding practical answers to everyday clinical challenges.”
