Henry Schein Introduces axiUm Ascend

Posted on Thursday, March 29, 2018

Henry Schein, Inc. (Nasdaq: HSIC), the world's largest provider of health care products and services to office-based dental, animal health, and medical practitioners, today announced the release of axiUm Ascend, an innovative, cloud-based software system designed for dental schools.

Developed by Exan Enterprises Inc., a Henry Schein company, axiUm Ascend is part of the axiUm suite of products, designed for dental education and large dental service organizations. axiUm is currently in use at approximately 90 percent of dental schools in the U.S. With features that fulfill clinical, administrative, and educational needs, axiUm Ascend is a new cloud-based software solution intended exclusively for dental schools. Based on Dentrix Ascend, it incorporates workflow requirements into one intuitive solution, making it possible for dental institutions to access their electronic health records (EHRs) via internet-enabled devices.

To protect patient information, axiUm Ascend incorporates multiple security features that are updated to stay current with industry standards. For example, the data is encrypted to the AES-256 standard while both in transit and at rest. axiUm Ascend also includes a system time-out security feature, which automatically logs out users after a certain period of inactivity.

AT Still University, Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health (ASDOH) is the first dental school to implement axiUm Ascend. ASDOH's clinic is using the software to manage its patients' EHRs, clinical charting and scheduling, imaging, and its dental students' graduation requirements.

"axiUm Ascend is the technological foundation of our dental school," said Dr. Robert Trombly, Dean at AT Still University, ASDOH. "As the EHR for our dental clinics, the software helps support our clinical education program. In addition, it provides a basis for ASDOH to offer overall better patient care. When people think of ASDOH, they think of 'whole person health,' of community-based health, and a commitment to the patient. Our dental school provides an excellent clinical education experience, working with a wide variety of patients, both here on campus as well as out in the community. We are excited about what axiUm Ascend brings to our program."

Many dental schools and programs are challenged to effectively maintain the technical infrastructure of an on-site software solution. Cloud-based solutions such as axiUm Ascend help resolve this by reducing the prohibitive costs of servers and databases that often come with on-site software while providing an integrated system of reliable business tools—EHR, imaging, digital impressions, insurance claims, interactive patient communications—that can provide a complete clinical, financial, and demographic record of patient visits. This allows schools to spend more time caring for patients and ensuring that students are successful, and less time managing their clinics.

"One of the things that excites me the most about axiUm Ascend, and the direction we're headed, is the ability to take advantage of the cloud as a platform," said Dr. Jonny Brennan, Associate Dean of Innovation and Curriculum at AT Still University, ASDOH. "It gives us the opportunity to leverage the internet, which gives our users the ability to access the EHR on multiple devices—a laptop, a clinical workstation, or a mobile device. In addition, the cloud platform facilitates the speed in which we receive our axiUm Ascend software updates and improvements. We are excited to partner with a proven company like Exan, as they have the dental industry experience with Henry Schein backing them up. It reassures us even further that we've chosen the right direction."

Exan is a proven leader in dental management software with more than 25 years of experience in the software marketplace. The company has built a trusted reputation for software that is practical and robust and is committed to assisting dental professionals, large dental practices, hospitals, and educational institutions worldwide with increasing profitability and efficiency.

"For over 25 years, axiUm has been the software of choice for most of the dental schools in North America and is recognized worldwide," said Ted DeVries, President and CEO of the Exan Group. "With our new cloud software solution, axiUm Ascend, dental organizations such as ASDOH can now take advantage of software that is affordable, easily accessible, feature rich, and intuitive. It is backed by Exan's proven track record of superior customer support, implementation, and consulting services."

PRO-SYS® VarioSonic® Powerbrush receives ADA Seal of Acceptance

Posted on Wednesday, March 28, 2018

The American Dental Association (ADA) today announced that the PRO-SYS® VarioSonic® Powerbrush receives its ADA Seal of Acceptance.

The ADA Council on Scientific Affairs accepted the power toothbrush based on the finding that the product is safe and effective in removing plaque and helping to prevent and reduce gingivitis when used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

The VarioSonic features five speeds and includes five easy-to-change brush heads, each with a different stiffness. All brush heads use innovative DuPont™ Tynex® bristles, precision manufactured to the highest standards. The Normal Soft brush head is ideal for healthy mouths, and four other levels of softness cater to patients with sensitivity. The five speeds and five brush heads included with the VarioSonic offer 25 possible settings. The VarioSonic presents extra-long battery life -- more than one month under normal use.

To earn the ADA Seal of Acceptance, the products’ designer, Benco Dental, had to pass ADA Laboratory tests and meet ADA and American National Standards Institute-approved dental standards.

“The range of speeds and bristle stiffness ensure that anyone can find just the right combination,” said Benco Dental Managing Director Rick Cohen. “This is a brush for all: people with healthy mouths, but also people with sensitive gums and periodontal issues.”

BIOLASE Announces Growing Awareness of Dental Lasers Among Pediatric Dentists

Posted on Wednesday, March 28, 2018

BIOLASE, Inc., the global leader in dental lasers, announced today that the demand for pain-free care increases as awareness of the more patient-friendly benefits of using dental lasers is growing in pediatric dentistry. With BIOLASE all-tissue dental lasers, pediatric dentists can treat even their youngest patients with little to no anesthesia, allowing dentists to intervene earlier in the management of children's dental conditions, such as tooth decay. Minimally invasive treatment with a dental laser allows for increased patient acceptance of treatment and practice growth. To date, BIOLASE has seen significant year-over-year growth of laser adoption among pediatric dentists.

"Lasers have enabled me to better treat my patients, building a patient base that is happier and more receptive to continued care," said Dr. Sarah Mathias, an Orange County-based pediatric dentist. "As lasers have evolved over the years, we've been able to perform more painless procedures than ever before – more effectively and efficiently. Lasers have enabled me to offer my patients the highest standard of care and grow my practice with a loyal customer base."

In addition to the benefit of improved patient acceptance and health outcomes, dental lasers also serve pediatric dentists from a practice management standpoint.

"Dental lasers are an unparalleled tool for pediatric dentists to provide best-in-class care to their patients," said Dr. Samuel Low, chief dental officer of BIOLASE. "With dental lasers, pediatric dentists are ensuring optimal oral health from the beginning of a patient's life, while creating a healthy relationship with dentistry to last a lifetime."

Laser dentistry provides new avenues for the management of previously painful procedures, such as frenectomies to address ankyloglossia (or tongue-tie). A recent U.S. study showed an increase in surgical frenectomies for the correction of the condition.

While up to 10 percent of the general public has tongue-tie – including a similar percent of children – the pain, bleeding, lack of effectiveness and long healing time of traditional frenectomies have caused many parents to forgo the procedure. Children who struggle to breastfeed, breathe or speak have been left with few to no options before the advent of dental lasers. Laser frenectomies can be performed without anesthesia on children as young as three weeks old, with a recovery time that can be as short as three days and no stitches to be removed.

Waterlase® All-Tissue Lasers treat both hard and soft tissue conditions. In many cases, pediatric dentists can replace scalpels, shots and drills with lasers for multiple procedures, including tooth decay removal, tongue-tie management, and facilitating tooth movement.

As the market leader for decades, BIOLASE has provided well over half of the all-tissue lasers sold to improve the dental standard of care.

About BIOLASE, Inc.

BIOLASE, Inc. is a medical device company that develops, manufactures, markets, and sells laser systems in dentistry and medicine and also markets, sells, and distributes dental imaging equipment, including three-dimensional CAD/CAM intra-oral scanners and digital dentistry software. BIOLASE's proprietary laser products incorporate approximately 220 patented and 90 patent-pending technologies designed to provide biologically clinically superior performance with less pain and faster recovery times. BIOLASE's innovative products provide cutting-edge technology at competitive prices to deliver the best results for dentists and patients. BIOLASE's principal products are revolutionary dental laser systems that perform a broad range of dental procedures, including cosmetic and complex surgical applications, and a full line of dental imaging equipment. BIOLASE has sold over 35,500 laser systems to date in over 90 countries around the world. The AADR and Dentsply Sirona presented the 2018 SCADA awards

Posted on Tuesday, March 27, 2018

The Student Competition for Advancing Dental Research and Its Application (SCADA) program began in 1959 as a joint venture between Dentsply Sirona (then DENTSPLY International) and the American Dental Association during its centennial session in New York City. Mr. Henry M. Thornton, then President of DENTSPLY International and Dr. Harold Hillenbrand, then Executive Director of the ADA, initiated the first program in New York City to promote student research and participation in organized dentistry.

Nearly 60 years later, more than 7,500 students participate in this program, including students in programs across 39 countries. In 2017, the American Association for Dental Research joined Dentsply Sirona to co-sponsor the SCADA program. As the program has grown over the years, so too has the breadth of the research with students presenting the results of their clinical, basic and translational science or public health research.

Award categories

Three awards are presented in each category for first, second and third place. The scientific presentations are divided into two categories: Basic and Translational Science Research and Clinical Science/Public Health Research. First place recipients in both categories receive $1,000. Second place winners receive $750 and third place winners receive $500.

The 2018 AADR/Dentsply Sirona SCADA Program winners are:

Category I: Clinical Science / Public Health Research

First place: Nisarg Patel (Harvard School of Dental Medicine)

Second place: Galina Yakovlev (University of Minnesota School of Dentistry)

Third place: Viktoriya Kuchuk (University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine)

Category II: Basic and Translational Science Research

First place: Ke'ale Louie (University of Michigan School of Dentistry)

Second place: Timothy Yu (University of California Los Angeles School of Dentistry)

Third place: Bronwyn Hagen (University of California San Francisco School of Dentistry) and Michael Eskander (University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio)

“The competition provides such a fantastic opportunity to meet peers from other schools and learn more about different research endeavors taking place internationally. I feel so blessed to have met such a brilliant and driven group of people. Conducting research has brought me more fulfillment than I ever anticipated, and I’m honored to be a part of SCADA,” remarked Karen Ben-Elazar from Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine.

Students who have presented their research to their respective national programs become members of the SCADA alumni association. Alumni serve as judges in future competitions and benefit from networking within a global community of professionals. These connections encourage ongoing opportunities among students, dental schools, researchers and clinicians.

Dr. Teresa A. Dolan, Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer with Dentsply Sirona, is a strong advocate of the importance of supporting student research noting that, “These students are without a doubt the next generation of leaders in dentistry. It’s inspiring to see the intellectual curiosity of each student and the level of research that this group has performed as a whole. It represents the spirit and purpose of the SCADA program. Congratulations to the participants and award winners in this outstanding group.”

In addition to the student awards, SCADA grants fellowship funding to qualified members to help support their graduate education. SCADA also presents a faculty advisor award annually to honor the efforts of faculty in their mentoring of student research and an achievement award for outstanding dedication to the profession. Ivoclar Vivadent sales rose by 1.5% in Europe and 3.9% in North America. Two-digit growth (14.7%) was achieved in Latin America, while Asia/Pacific saw an increase of 9.7%. The strongest growth was registered in Brazil, Greater China, Russia, and Mexico with over 20% each. “We are very pleased with this performance, but this trend is not new,” comments CEO Robert Ganley. “The company has been investing in the emerging markets with much success for many years.”

Several Growth Drivers

The products and systems focused on dental practices continued to be the growth drivers. The categories of Direct Restoratives and Professional Care grew by a combined rate of 7%. Sales of restorative materials increased by around 4% and the turnover of clinical accessories rose significantly (27%). Furthermore, the category of Fixed Prosthetics showed considerable growth where sales increased by almost 6%. Apart from the All-Ceramics segment, the cementation products recorded particularly strong growth rates in this category.

129 New Full-Time Positions

At the end of 2017, the Ivoclar Vivadent Group had 3,596 full-time employees worldwide. A total of 129 positions were added during the year. The new job opportunities were created in various subsidiaries and regions including recent acquisitions.

Outlook for 2018

In 2018, Ivoclar Vivadent will again focus its efforts on the market expansion and the development of digital technologies for the benefit of dentists and dental technicians. The extensive range of CAD/CAM products introduced under the new Ivoclar Digital brand at the International Dental Show (IDS) in 2017 will continue to play a major role. Mr. Ganley summarized the company’s digital direction: “As one of the recognized global leaders in esthetic dental solutions, we are now driving the development of digital esthetics. It is an exciting time to be in the dental industry.”

Renewed Multimillion Investments Planned

Ivoclar Vivadent plans to invest around 82 million Swiss francs in projects around the world in 2018. Thirty-nine million Swiss francs are earmarked for investments at the company headquarters in Schaan, Principality of Liechtenstein.
