Dr. Wenyuan Shi Appointed CEO and Chief Scientific Officer of The Forsyth Institute

Posted on Monday, August 28, 2017

The Forsyth Institute, a world leader in oral health research, today announced that the Board of Directors has appointed Dr. Wenyuan Shi as the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Scientific Officer of the Institute effective September 1, 2017.

“Dr. Shi’s creativity, vision and drive will help reinvigorate Forsyth in a way that not only evokes our original mission of providing quality dental care to Boston’s children, but also takes Forsyth forward as the leader in cutting‐edge dental research from the lab into the real world,” said Peter Nessen, Chair of the Board. “His track record as an innovator, entrepreneur and academic leader – paired with his extensive international network and proven ability to translate science into successful business – make Dr. Shi ideally suited to lead Forsyth into a bright future.” Dr. Shi is the co‐author of over 200 scientific articles and is credited as co‐inventor of 45 patents. Most notable among these inventions is an herbal lollipop that can treat tooth decay in children, which he designed and brought to market in 2008. In recent years, Dr. Shi has worked to patent a series of inventions that aim to more effectively kill bacteria in the mouth, preventing dental problems like gum infections and tooth decay before they start. Dr. Shi is also a co‐founder of C3J Therapeutics, a biotechnology company focused on improving human health through targeted, pathogen‐specific antimicrobials to modulate microbiome. Upon taking on the role of CEO, Dr. Shi will step down from his present position as the Chair of the Section of Oral Biology at the UCLA School of Dentistry and the Doctoral Advisor for the Oral Biology PhD Program at UCLA, where he has been heading multiple NIH and industry grants to use multi‐disciplinary approaches to study the oral microbiome.

“I am excited to be joining an organization whose mission so closely aligns with my passions,” said Dr. Shi. “The Forsyth Institute has long been a leader in bringing together great minds and fostering discussion and discovery. I truly believe that we can revolutionize the way oral health and overall health are perceived through foundational research discoveries, as well as through community outreach programs that educate the public about the importance of oral health. I look forward to furthering the Forsyth mission by elevating oral health into the national spotlight and by continuing to serve as a convenor around important discussions that will drive new discoveries.”

In addition to the appointment of Dr. Shi, the Board of Directors has also appointed interim‐CEO and Chief Operating Officer Diane MacDonald, to the role of President, in recognition of the energy, dedication and structure she has brought to the institute during her time as the interim‐CEO.

Varnish Pen by Young Launched at RDH Under One Roof

Posted on Monday, August 28, 2017

When the doors opened to RDH Under One Roof in Chicago, hundreds of hygienists swarmed the Young Varnish Pen booth to be the first to try the innovative all-in-one varnish delivery system.

“This is amazing! No messing around with opening packages and making sure the product is mixed,” said RDH Angie Stone.

Hygienists lined up to experience the new quick, simple and mess-free approach to varnish applications. A quick twist and easy press sends varnish right from the applicator system to the teeth, eliminating the need to double-dip, open the difficult packaging and keep track of small applicator brushes.

RDH Sheri Foran held the pen in hand and said, “It’s more convenient because it’s not two handed, so you can retract with your finger or thumb. It’s terrific. I love it!”

Varnish Pen contains a single-dose 5% sodium fluoride varnish made with xylitol that provides sensitivity relief for patients of all ages. The thin, translucent no-mix formula is easy to handle without stringing or clumping, and is available in Mint and Assorted (Mint, Grape and Bubblegum) flavors.

Event to Update Dentists on Techniques for Achieving Clinical Success

Posted on Thursday, August 24, 2017

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., August 18, 2017 (Newswire) - Glidewell Dental, a leading technological innovator in restorative dentistry for 47 years, announced today its sponsorship of the inaugural Glidewell Dental Symposium. Scheduled for Nov. 17, 2017, at the Dallas Marriott Las Colinas in Irving, Texas, this full-day event will bring together nearly a dozen distinguished speakers to present on a variety of tools and techniques aimed at achieving clinical and business success within the modern practice.

“Dentists have more new challenges and opportunities today than at any other time in recent history,” said Dr. Neil Park, vice president of clinical affairs at Glidewell Dental. “On the one hand, the advancement of dental technology continues to introduce new treatment modalities and make traditional ones more predictable, efficient, and reliable than ever before. But we also live in an age of increased financial pressures, as well as a rising demand of patients expecting outstanding esthetic outcomes and accustomed to greater comfort and convenience. This means that today’s clinicians face mounting pressure to keep abreast of the latest improvements.”

By assembling a diverse group of experts in several areas of importance to dental practitioners, this educational symposium will cover a wide range of topics, including esthetic dentistry, digital dentistry, dental implants, tissue regeneration, sleep-related dentistry, and practice management.

“Contemporary dentists are surely aware of these new developments,” Dr. Park added, “but may still be wondering which might be most beneficial to their practice, or how to incorporate them. The scope and speed with which new options have proliferated in the marketplace can make it difficult to assess those solutions most valuable to a particular practitioner.”

Glidewell Dental is an ADA CERP recognized provider, and an Academy of General Dentistry Approved PACE Program Provider. So symposium attendees will have the opportunity to earn up to eight units of continuing education (CE) while hearing from and visiting with various, esteemed opinion leaders. Dr. Jack Hahn, a noted pioneer in the field of dental implantology, will provide the closing keynote.

Whatever a clinician’s comfort or experience level, the symposium intends to provide an expansive look at some of the most exciting tools and techniques available to the modern practice. By showcasing time-tested solutions augmented by state-of-the-art methods and materials, the organizers hope to assist attending professionals in maximizing efficiency, optimizing results, and furthering practice growth.

“With new technology, there’s always the question: What is the cost of adoption?” said Jim Glidewell, founder and president of Glidewell Dental, who is scheduled to deliver the symposium’s opening remarks. “I’ve always preferred to ask, what is the cost of delay? In dentistry, we must strive first and foremost to provide the best possible service for our patients. In following this creed, I’ve found that those of us looking to advance the industry — ‘adapting at the speed of change’ — often end up benefiting greatly ourselves.”

Tuition for the event is set at $125 if registered on or before Sept. 30, 2017, or $195 if registered thereafter. For the complete symposium agenda, or to submit a registration request, please visit GlidewellSymposium.com or call 866-791-9539. Breakfast and a full lunch will be provided, along with an evening cocktail reception with hosted bar.
