Donation Helps UK Dentistry Establish Digital Dentistry Program

Posted on June 22, 2017

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jun 15, 2017) – Since joining the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry 18 months ago, Dean Stephanos Kyrkanides has worked with faculty, students and the community to make his vision for increasing the use of digital dentistry at UKCD a reality. Kyrkanides’s goals are three-pronged; he wants to utilize leading edge technology to educate clinical dentists, reduce wait time for patients and establish UKCD as leaders in the field of dentistry.

The clear vision and reputation of UKCD was one of the reasons a partnership, including a generous gift of equipment such as milling machines, scanners and software, with Straumann USA LLC was possible. Arjan Haverhals, vice president of customer marketing and education at Straumann USA LLC said, “Straumann and the University of Kentucky can work together to educate future clinicians to provide the best care possible. The landscape of dentistry is changing and the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry has set itself apart and will remain on the cutting edge of innovative technology.”

Kyrkanides believes Straumann chose UKCD as a partner because of the clear vision for increasingly incorporating digital workflows. “UKCD has emerged as a leader in dental education and they are impressed by our vision,” he said. "This gift will facilitate the launch of our increased digital dentistry efforts this fall."

Digital dentistry is part of the field of dentistry that utilizes technology in a way that differs from what has been done in the past. According to Dr. Marcus Abboud, associate dean of digital dentistry at UKCD, use of technology not only provides clinicians with more accuracy, it also enables them to use their time and resources more efficiently — an aspect that is beneficial to both provider and patient.

"A new and complete digital workflow for dental restorations can significantly enhance the overall patient experience, shorten the treatment time and deliver consistent quality results compared to the traditional labor intense craftsmanship," Abboud said. “Starting with an intra-oral scan taking pictures of the tooth eliminates any impression material in the mouth of the patient. It delivers accuracy together with time and cost efficiency through the whole restorative procedure.”

The partnership with Straumann USA LLC will enable UKCD to begin providing this leading edge education to current and future dental providers. “The digital initiative at the UK College of Dentistry entails a comprehensive unique model that educates students, residents, faculty and the dental community in new digital health devices and technologies, and explains the value to patients and the health care system," Abboud said. "Digital technology will be included in all different physical spaces of the UK College of Dentistry, covering every aspect of dentistry from diagnosis, computer aided design to manufacturing.”

Kyrkanides is proud Straumann USA LLC wanted to assist UKCD in achieving its goal of leading the nation and providing the best education possible to dental providers — especially those in Kentucky. Abboud, believes the partnership will draw more students to the University of Kentucky. He said, “College students interested in the dental profession will most likely choose the university that can prepare them best for their future profession. As digital dentistry is the future standard of dental offices, this will be a driving force for students to join the UK College of Dentistry.”

ADA Business Enterprises, Inc. Endorses HealthFirst

Posted on June 22, 2017

ADA Business Resources has announced HealthFirst as its exclusive endorsed provider of dental emergency medical kits for ADA members. An emergency medical kit containing up-to-date medications is a key element of patient safety and emergency preparedness in dental offices. With this endorsement, ADA members may take advantage of special discounts on HealthFirst emergency medical kits, ranging from the basic SM Series kits to the advanced Mobile ACLS kits.

HealthFirst has provided emergency medical kits for over 40 years to dentists across the United States. The company currently tracks and automatically replenishes expired emergency medications for more than 40,000 dental offices, helping ensure that their kits are up to date.  Dentists can speak with a HealthFirst compliance counselor who will help them assess the needs of their practice and the type of kit that will help keep them prepared for a medical emergency and compliant with their state and local regulations.

“We have spoken with a lot of dental offices who have relied on our kits to manage medical emergencies,” notes Dr. Don Cohen, Chief Clinical Officer of HealthFirst. “Recent stories have included treating patients with anaphylaxis and low blood sugar as well as addressing an office staff member’s severe allergic reaction. Medical emergencies really do happen in dental practices, and HealthFirst is proud to help customers stay prepared.”

“ADA Business Resources is delighted to endorse HealthFirst’s emergency medical kits, which are already the market leader in dentistry,” comments Ms. Deborah Doherty, Managing Director of ADA Business Resources.  “We have already endorsed HealthFirst for their amalgam recovery solution and their sharps and medical waste mailback disposal services. With today’s announcement, ADA members have the opportunity to save on three leading solutions from HealthFirst that help ensure patient safety and practice compliance. We like working with HealthFirst because they offer full service solutions tailored to the needs of dental practices. For example, when they send replacements for expired medications in their medical kits, they also provide the materials necessary to ship back the expired medications for compliant disposal.”

HealthFirst aims to provide dental practices with an optimal customer experience by reducing the burden of compliance tasks such as maintaining an emergency medical kit. “We recognize that it can be a challenge for dental practices to monitor medications and reorder them prior to expiration,” says Dr. Cohen. “HealthFirst helps manage these tasks for our customers, and we even provide OnTraQ, a cloud-based software solution, to simplify tracking, reporting and compliance management for both single and multi-office dental practices.”

The ADA Business Resources’ endorsement provides exclusive discounts to ADA members on HealthFirst emergency medical kits of at least 10 percent and a special introductory offer is available through July 31, 2017.  To take advantage of these discounts and special endorsement launch offers, ADA members may contact a HealthFirst Compliance Counselor at 888-963-6787 or visit www.healthfirst.com/ada

IPS e.max® ZirCAD from Ivoclar Vivadent

Posted on June 22, 2017

Since its launch, the IPS e.max system from Ivoclar Vivadent has become a leading all-ceramic mainstay that has benefited laboratories, clinicians and patients alike.  Consisting of lithium disilicate glass ceramic materials, IPS e.max Press and IPS e.max CAD, the IPS e.max system has now been expanded to include a comprehensive selection of zirconium oxide discs and blocks under the brand IPS e.max ZirCAD.

Providing options for a wide range of indications, IPS e.max ZirCAD discs are available in three levels of translucency (MT, LT, and MO) and in an innovative polychromatic MT Multi-layered version. The centerpiece of the new system, IPS e.max MT Multi, has been designed with a special powder formulation and innovative shading technology. The results are restorations that demonstrate a natural progression of chroma and translucency from dentin to enamel. IPS e.max ZirCAD MT Multi allows for the efficient production of restorations in A-D shades without requiring further characterization or staining.

The unique formulation of IPS e.max ZirCAD MT provides the perfect combination of zirconia strength, color, and translucency; the ideal zirconia choice for cases in which high mechanical stability, thin restoration walls, and natural-looking dentition are of the essence. Besides lithium disilicate, monolithic zirconium oxide is one of the most commonly used all-ceramic materials due to its high flexural strength and fracture toughness.  With IPS e.max ZirCAD a tradeoff in translucency for strength is not required, as this esthetic zirconia material provides up to 30% higher flexural strength and 50% higher fracture toughness compared to other common higher translucency zirconia materials.

IPS e.max lithium disilicate and IPS e.max zirconium oxide offer versatile all-ceramic solutions for every case. IPS e.max is the only system that brings these two materials together in a single, comprehensive, easy to use solution that allows all indications in fixed prosthetics to be covered with an all-ceramic option.

Low-Profile Eyewash Station from TAUB Products

Posted on June 22, 2017

TAUB Products, a long-time manufacturer of dental laboratory and restorative products, has introduced a low-profile emergency eyewash station that adapts to a wide range of office and laboratory faucets. The new station provides instant access to a single aerated water jet, flushing the eyes and washing the face of chemical or particulate contamination.

Jordan Taub, Vice President of TAUB, stated, “The unique design allows water to flow normally downward for washing hands, and during an emergency, the user can quickly rotate it upwards, providing a soft stream of water that will wash the face. The user places the water stream on the brow of the nose and both eyes receive an effective rinse.”

Setting this apart from dual-jet designs, the key features of the product include a single rotating nozzle to wash eyes and face, a low-profile modern design that fits most standard faucets, a flow rate of 1.2 gallons per minute, which exceeds ANSI standards, and a design that prevents standing water, thus reducing the chance for mold development.

EPA Publishes the Amalgam Separator

Posted on June 20, 2017

SOLMETEX (NORTHBORUGH, MA) the market leader in amalgam separation with the Hg5™ series of amalgam separators, is pleased to announce the EPA’s signing and publishing of the “Effluent Limitations Guidelines and Standards for Dental Category”.

Today the regulation, commonly referred to as the “Dental Rule” was signed into the Federal Register, now requiring all 50 states be compliant to a new standard of Best Management Practices (BMPs) regarding amalgam waste. The regulation was originally signed on December 16, 2016 but has been ‘under review’ with the new presidential administration, until last Friday, June 9th.

“We are very excited by the passage of the EPA’s “Dental Rule”, states Michael Toole, Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “This regulation will greatly reduce the amount of mercury present in the waste water. Solmetex is committed to being a comprehensive resource in helping dentists be part of this process in making them compliant.”

This new rule requires certain dental offices to comply with BMPs when handling amalgam waste. Practices are now required to either install an ISO 11143:2008 certified amalgam separator or an ANSI/ADA Standard No. 108 certified amalgam separator at a separation rate of 95%. Additionally, dental offices will be required to use an amalgam waste buckets as defined in the BMPs, for the proper disposal of contact/non-contact amalgam items such a vacuum traps and amalgam capsules.

Lauren Nagel, Vice President of Finance & Operations states, “For the past 16 years, it has been the primary focus of Solmetex to promote Best Management Practices in the dental offices. We are excited to be able to help dental offices stay in compliance and thus, creates a cleaner environment on a larger platform nationwide.”

The new regulation will affect dental offices nationwide that remove or replace amalgam restorations, a vast improvement over just 11 individual state mandates which have been using amalgam separators since 2002. In sum, the new dental rule states:

1. Existing dental offices have 3 years to install a certified amalgam separator; new dental practices have 90 days to install an amalgam separator.

2. Dental offices must use either an ISO 11143:2008 certified amalgam separator or an ANSI/ADA Standard No. 108 for amalgam separator at a separation rate of 95%.

3. Dental offices must employ the use of an amalgam waste bucket(s) for the proper and responsible recycling of dry amalgam waste.

4. Line cleaners must be between a pH of 6-8.

“The passage of this rule brings attention to a greater environmental issue that will naturally put the dentist in an even more positive light from the perspective of their patients. It will relay the message that the dental practice not only cares for their healthcare but also the environment that we all share.” states Nick Mozzicato, Chief Executive Officer, Solmetex.

Planmeca Brings “CALM” to Imaging

Posted on June 20, 2017

Planmeca has created CALM(Correction Algorithm for Latent Movement), a proprietary Planmeca algorithm, to address doctor’s concerns over patient movement during a 3D scan. Movement during a 3D scan can result in the patient being x-rayed multiple times, which adds more time to the appointment and frustration for patient and doctor. There is also always a concern of additional exposure to radiation.

With Planmeca CALM, CBCTs can analyze and compensate for the slight movement that can occur during a scan to provide improved diagnostic quality images. The addition of this feature will streamline the imaging process, minimizing retakes while improving diagnosis. The important benefit to patients: less retakes equals less radiation while achieving better diagnostic images.

“Dentists evaluating CBCT machines for purchase should focus critically on each manufacturer’s solutions for stabilizing the patient in the machine,“ states Dr. Dale A. Miles DDS, MS (Inside Dentistry, May 2017).  Planmeca CALM addresses this doctor’s requirement as it can compensate for slight movement to produce diagnostic quality images. This exclusive Planmeca feature will have an important impact on patients and doctors.
