In Wisconsin, Bill Protecting Dentists Passes Legislature

Posted on Wednesday, October 9, 2013

A bill authored by Wisconsin state Sen. Jerry Petrowski aimed at protecting local dentists from unfair insurance practices passed the state Legislature this week with broad bipartisan support, according to the Wausau Daily Herald.

The bill bars insurance companies from setting prices for services they do not cover in their insurance plans — services such as teeth whitening and porcelain veneers typically fall into this category. Prices set by insurance companies might be lower than the actual cost of performing the service, said Petrowski, R-Stettin.

Proponents of this type of legislation say that allowing insurance companies to set prices forces dentists to give discounts to their clients for noncovered services, which shifts the cost to dentists and uninsured dental clients. The bill does not affect services covered by insurance plans. About 30 other states have similar laws.
