ITI Awards 2012 André Schroeder Research Prize to Cornelius von Wilmowsky

Posted on Wednesday, October 9, 2013

The International Team for Implantology (ITI), a leading academic organization dedicated to the promotion of evidence-based education and research in the field of implant dentistry, announced Dr. Cornelius von Wilmowsky as the winner of the 17th André Schroeder Research Prize. Dr. von Wilmowsky, a PhD dentist, oral surgeon and researcher at the Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, was presented with the award by ITI President Professor Daniel Buser at the ITI Congress Canada in Toronto on September 21, 2012. The prize is accompanied by an endowment of CHF 20,000.

Of all the submissions, “Diabetes mellitus negatively affects peri-implant bone formation in the diabetic domestic pig” was selected as the winning paper by the ITI Research Committee.

The aim of Dr. von Wilmowsky and his co-authors comprising Philipp Stockmann, Igor Harsch, Kerstin Amann, Philipp Metzler, Rainer Lutz, Tobias Moest, Friedrich Wilhelm Neukam, and Karl Andreas Schlegel, was to investigate the effect of diabetes on peri-implant bone formation in an animal model of human bone repair. Dr. von Wilmowsky commented, “We know that poorly controlled diabetes affects healing in connection with dental implants, but do not know enough about the pathomechanisms concerned. The knowledge we gain through our research allows us to influence these pathomechanisms in order to increase the success rate of implants in diabetic patients.”

Dr. von Wilmowsky graduated from the School of Dentistry at Friedrich Alexander University in Erlangen-Nuremberg in 2005 and from its medical school in 2011. Between 2005 and 2009 he was a Research Fellow at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery at Friedrich Alexander University where he has been working as a Resident in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery since 2011.

“It is an honor to have our work recognized by the ITI Research Committee and to be part of such a distinguished list of prize winners. This award serves to motivate us to continue along our chosen research path,” commented Dr. von Wilmowsky.
