CHICAGO, Sept. 13, 2013—The American Dental Association (ADA) New Dentist Committee recently honored dentists at its 27th annual conference in Denver. Winners were selected based on their demonstrated commitment to new dentists and dental students through their enthusiasm, volunteerism and dedication to the future of the profession.

The 2013 award winners include:

Golden Apple Award for New Dentist Leadership: Dr. David White, a general dentist in Reno, Nevada, earned this award for his commitment to the profession and specifically for his work as director of the University of Nevada, Reno Pre-Dental Society, and for his work as an adjunct professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he coaches and mentors pre-dental students, students and new dentists. Dr. White is also the chair of the Nevada Dental Association New Dentist Committee and co-creator of a program that admits high school students with exceptional grades and test scores into dental school following three years of successful undergraduate work.

Golden Apple Award for Outstanding Leadership in Mentoring: Dr. Daniel Edwards, a general dentist in Ann Arbor, Mich., earned this award for his robust experience in mentoring and the development of many student leaders. He is an adjunct clinical lecturer in restorative sciences for the department of cariology, restorative sciences and endodontics at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He also serves as the lead faculty advisor for the university’s chapters of the American Student Dental Association and the Delta Sigma Delta Dental fraternity.

New Dentist Committee Outstanding Program Award of Excellence: The Arizona Dental Association (AzDA) Subcommittee on the New Dentist earned this award for creating a dentistry business mastership series called “To Help Each Other Succeed.” The 10-session program provides AzDA-member dentists who have been practicing less than 10 years with information to succeed in practice management, topics that are typically not offered in dental school, as well as opportunities to interact with established practitioners who may serve as resources and mentors.

Outstanding New Dentist Committee: The Oklahoma Dental Association (ODA) New Dentist Committee earned this award for designing a complete portfolio of activities that engage its membership throughout the year including the New Dentist Spotlight in the ODA Journal, New Dentist Seminar Series and a reception at its annual session. The seminar series offers seven hours of continuing education and provides new dentists and dental students with opportunities to network with recent graduates and longtime dentists.
