Dear Readers,
Most of us have the same experience returning from vacation—our email overflowing with newsletters, updates, press releases, etc. We sign up for these alerts with the best intentions of staying on top of our career and personal interests, but it’s difficult to keep up with the constant flow of information.

In the rapidly-expanding field of oral healthcare, it’s more important than ever to identify the places where we are assured of finding the latest information: for example, current research on the emerging science of oral biofilms. It is estimated that bacterial biofilms may cause up to 65% of all infections in the body, therefore knowledge about their effects strengthens our understanding of patient health. This month’s feature article provides a solid background on this subject.

Each month, Inside Dental Assisting features two continuing education articles. In this issue, the first is an overview of composite resins, outlining the various types, and their specific applications and advantages. These materials are being continually improved, and keeping up-to-date on their features is an important part of effective patient care.

As part of our continuing education series on infection control in the dental practice, the Organization for Safety and Asepsis Procedures has contributed an article on “Infection Control—Ending the Day.” Good preparation at the end of a day can make a difference in practice efficiency the following day. This article discusses the procedures, documentation, and communications for a comprehensive program. Included with the article is a very useful “End of Day Checklist for Safety and Asepsis.”

At Inside Dental Assisting, our goal is to provide the information you need in the format that you want. We’d like to hear from you, and you can easily log on and provide feedback at While you’re there, you can earn continuing education credits, review previously-published articles and online-only content, and browse other professional and educational resources. Let us know what you think, and thank you for your continuing support.
