Expansion of DEXIS brand incorporates full suite of imaging products

Thousands of dental professionals around the world are familiar with the quality of the DEXIS brand from using its intraoral software and imaging products. But now, Envista, the parent company of DEXIS, is emphasizing that its quality extends across the entire spectrum of diagnostic imaging because DEXIS is combining other leading brands, including i-CAT, Gendex, Instrumentarium, SOREDEX, and NOMAD as well as adding an intraoral scanner. "DEXIS is a name that stands for high-quality images and easy-to-use software, not only in North America but also around the world," says Jean-Claude "JC" Kyrillos, MBA, the senior vice president and president of Imaging and Diagnostic Solutions for Envista.

The move relates to Envista's divestiture of the KaVo Treatment Unit and Instrument business, but its scope extends far beyond that, perhaps most notably to the acquisition of Carestream Dental's Scanning Technology business. "That will be a new product line that will bear the DEXIS name and, importantly, add intraoral scanning to our portfolio," Kyrillos says. "We believe that we are best-in-class in intraoral an extraoral imaging already. In the intraoral scanner market, we have been a proud reseller of Medit and 3Shape, but now we will handle the R&D and manufacturing of our own scanner as well."

The DEXIS intraoral scanner and other DEXIS products will feature stronger integrations with Envista's DTX Studio software. "DTX Studio will remain an open platform because that is a big part of our philosophy; however, we aspire to have our own intraoral scanner be a couple clicks easier to use," Kyrillos says. DTX Studio continues to incorporate increasing amounts of artificial intelligence (AI) to help make dental professionals' lives easier. For example, the Magic Sort solution accurately files up to 18 radiographs for a full-mouth series, which saves time for the dentist or assistant who would normally file the images and also avoids the potential for user errors that could lead to mistakes on cases. "We are a very sophisticated company in the context of dental AI," Kyrillos says. "Our first FDA-cleared solution was introduced in 2017, and we have since added several more, including the most recent one in March for mandibular nerve tracing. We are increasingly utilizing AI solutions to augment our different DEXIS product lines."

With the time and care that are put into developing these top-of-the-line products, Envista's DEXIS brand stands behind what it sells. All products, from sensors to cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) units, now come with a 60-day satisfaction guarantee. For extraoral devices that need to be fixed to the wall and/or floor, DEXIS will even pay for removal, including the costs of repainting. "We believe that if patients go into a dentist's office and see our brands, they should immediately realize that this is an office that cares about quality and cares about patient outcomes," Kyrillos says. "With that commitment to quality, we are telling practices around the world, ‘If you are not sure about the investment, just try it—no hassle.' We are that confident in the quality and reliability of our solutions." In addition, for extraoral units, DEXIS offers the services of an expert third-party dental radiology company for second opinions on up to 60 3D scans over the course of the first 60 days of ownership.

Barriers to entry exist across the continuum of digital dentistry, but Envista hopes that the expansion of the DEXIS brand can help expedite adoption. The company is also devoting significant resources to training its support teams. "We hope that we will be clinicians' first choice for digital dentistry," Kyrillos says. "We now have the full portfolio of imaging modalities plus the improved functionality and AI clearances for DTX Studio. The way that we think about the industry really centers around digital dentistry workflow. We hope that clinicians will not just think us for single product solutions, but rather, as their offices become more modern, more competent, and more digital, we hope that Envista and the DEXIS brand will become their go-to source.
