Using a Combination Approach for Predictable Cementation & Bonding

Achieving high bond strengths with complementary products

Amanda Seay, DDS

Today a variety of cements and adhesive materials are available, making selection and use of cementation and adhesive materials a potentially confusing or challenging process. Using a cohesive luting system appropriate for all types of restorations, regardless of indication—along with complementary products that help to ensure predictability—can reduce uncertainty.

Among the products available for use in a systematic approach to cementation are advanced products designed specifically for cleaning prosthetic restorations after intraoral try-in (Ivoclean™, Ivoclar Vivadent, www.ivoclarvivadent.us); adhesive primers that chemically bind to treated surfaces to enhance long-term bonding (Monobond™ Plus, Ivoclar Vivadent); and clinically proven universal adhesive luting cements (Multilink® Automix, Ivoclar Vivadent) that efficiently generate high bond strengths. When used together, Ivoclean, Monobond Plus, and Multilink Automix Next Generation complement each other and ensure simplified and predictable placement of indirect restorations (eg, zirconia, metal-ceramic, or IPS e.max® [lithium disilicate, Ivoclar Vivadent]).

Because restorations are susceptible to salivary contamination, rinsing them with water only removes visible saliva, not the contaminating glycoproteins. Ivoclean removes phosphate molecules, facilitating bonding and allowing adhesive primers to chemically bind to the treated surfaces. This speeds cementation and seating procedures, reducing chair time. Compatible with all types of restorations, Ivoclean is simply applied to the bonding surface of the restoration, allowed to react for 20 seconds, rinsed, and dried, unlike other cleaning pastes that require multiple steps.

To facilitate a predictable and long-term bond, Monobond Plus is a restorative primer that chemically binds to treated restoration surfaces. When used with Multilink Automix for adhesive techniques, seating procedures are further enhanced.

Multilink Automix emphasizes easy placement by limiting the number of steps required for use without compromising bond strength or other physical properties. Multilink Automix is a universal adhesive luting composite system that features a self-curing initiator with light-cure option. As a result, the cement can polymerize completely without curing light exposure and regardless of opacity, shade, or restoration thickness. When use of a curing light is possible (eg, curing through IPS e.max), Multilink Automix can be light cured to speed the cementation process. In addition, the self-curing, self-etching dentin/enamel primer generates immediate, high-level bond strengths to both dentin and enamel, leading to long-term success.
