The Evolution of da Vinci Veneers
da Vinci announces the introduction of its new DVIS™system.
Long known for creating high-end esthetic restorations, daVinci Dental Studio of West Hills, California, helped pioneer the development of porcelain veneers back in the early 1980s, developing several techniques that are still used today with some of the leading clinicians and manufacturing companies of that time. The development of daVinci’s porcelain veneer formulas was a challenge, as there were no guidelines to follow. To maintain a 0.3-mm to 0.5-mm thickness in its veneers—which exhibit transparencies—the studio had to develop a technique that compensated for these transparencies. Because the preparation color would transmit through the veneer, causing different shade variations, daVinci had to develop three formulas to counterbalance the variations.
The first is a veneer that uses no opacious porcelain, which allows the preparation and resin color to achieve the desired result. For example, this formula would be used when the requested color and the preparation color are similar. The second formula is a 50% mixture of opacious porcelain and porcelain veneer for colors that differ by two to three shades. The third formula is an opacious liner used for shades that differ by four shades or more. This formulation is coupled with proprietary internal staining formulas that produce color from within, resulting in a true polychromatic shade variance.
Some of daVinci’s other notable developments were: a preparation design and technique for porcelain veneers; the platinum-foil fabrication technique; and the development of veneer porcelain with Ceramco (now DENTSPLY) taught the techniques of bonding resins to obtain excellent shade matching with veneer placement, gaining national exposure on television shows such as “Extreme Makeover” and “The Swan,” which promoted the benefits of cosmetic dentistry. This exposure was not only beneficial to daVinci but the entire dental arena, as many dentists and laboratories reported increases in requests for cosmetic restorations. As a result of the popularity of these types of television shows, daVinci receives numerous calls from interested patients asking for a dentist who works with the laboratory, using its products and services.
The studio has also given back by partnering with its clients to offer free dentistry to the underserved and has donated financial resources and time to many charitable organizations. In its 35-year history, daVinci has generated a loyal following by offering services that go above and beyond the norm. It has created a team of technicians to assist its clients at chairside for custom finishing; it partners with clients to promote their practices by co-sponsoring marketing campaigns; it offers special price considerations on many services through its social media circle; and it has a 50-seat capacity lecture center for continuing education for its technicians and clients.
The studio also has incorporated a case protocol to ensure the consistency of the restorations, and recommends that each case follow three steps. The first is to provide a digital image of the patient. This will not only encourage the patient to move forward if they are unsure but also—more importantly—demonstrate the results that can be achieved. The second step is for the laboratory to provide a preparation guide of the recommended preparation based on the type of restorations requested. Then, daVinci duplicates the prepared model and proceeds to create a diagnostic wax-up that duplicates the digital image. A siltec stent is made of the wax-up so that the dentist can provide temporaries to the patient. When the laboratory receives the case, it has exact guidelines to follow, ensuring a seamless transition from initial image to final restorations (Figure 1 and Figure 2).
Known as an innovator in the dental industry, daVinci Dental Studios has now implemented another breakthrough in providing their clients with the latest state-of-the art CAD/CAM technology. This simplified system includes all of the components for each case, including soft-tissue models, the abutment of choice, the screw for the abutment, the restoration of choice, and a seating jig (on request) all at one simplified fee.
