Prevention of Tooth Wear in Patients With Bruxism
Loray Spencer, DDS
A common and multifactorial problem, tooth wear results from any or a combination of chemical or mechanical processes (ie, erosion, abrasion, and attrition). Attrition, a wear process caused by direct tooth-to-tooth contact, may be caused by occlusal factors, such as malocclusion, and by bruxism, a condition characterized by clenching and grinding of the teeth. Symptoms of tooth wear can significantly impact patients’ quality of life, as hypersensitivity and pain are common in affected patients and the condition may alter dental function and appearance. An important aspect in preventing tooth wear is identifying and managing its potential causes, such as bruxism and malocclusion. This article discusses the diagnosis and management of bruxism, as well as orthodontic treatment for the correction of malocclusion both in patients with bruxism and in those with malocclusion in the absence of bruxism.
