Shade Matching Simplified

Troy Schmedding, DDS, on CLEARFIL MAJESTY™ ES-2 Universal

Being a lecturer on esthetics and restorative materials with a private practice focused on esthetic and functional dentistry, it is extremely important for me to use products that are at the forefront of dentistry. When CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES-2 Universal composite was released by Kuraray Noritake Dental, I knew that it would be another excellent material in their impressive product line that is backed by technology, research, and continuous innovation.

I've been using CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES-2 Universal composite in my practice for both posterior and anterior restorations for the last few months, and it has been a nice new addition to my armamentarium. When compared with other universal composites that I've used in the past, it is really technologically advanced. Its formula integrates Kuraray Noritake Dental's innovative Light Diffusion Technology (LDT), which makes restorations diffuse light in a similar way to natural tooth structure. In addition, this material can simplify the process of restoration because it does not require an opaquer or block out medium in situations involving tooth discoloration.

In the posterior region, I utilize CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES-2 Universal for about 80% to 85% of the cases that I treat, and it provides a really pleasing appearance. In the anterior region, I have found that it depends on the class of the restoration being performed and what I'm trying to accomplish in relation to the complexity of the tooth that presents. I've found the material to be great for Class 5 restorations because they allow for the LDT to really shine on the flatter, broader surface. It blends with the tooth structure underneath and produces an undefinable restoration, which is ultimately the goal.

The fact that CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES-2 Universal is a single-shade material is great for simplifying my workflow, and it also simplifies selection for my assistants when they're setting up the products needed for our cases. They know that having this material on hand is going to cover a vast array of the direct resin restorations that we're performing on a daily basis.

The physical properties of CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES-2 Universal set the material apart from other composites on the market. It is wonderful to handle, and it is not sticky in the least. This composite is easy to place well, and it stays in place. It also has physical properties that are especially important in the posterior region, including excellent physical strength, compressive strength, wear resistance, and particle load. All of these properties make it a complete universal composite for everyday restorations.

At the end of the day, I believe that this is a material that should be in all dental offices because it not only simplifies workflows with fewer steps and fewer products but also produces restorations that demonstrate superior functional properties and exhibit excellent esthetics.

Key Takeaways

1. Simplified shade selection without a shade guide

2. Excellent wear resistance and physical properties

3.  Efficient and comfortable procedure (single-shade technique, no blocker or opaquer)

4. Fewer steps to achieve consistent, predictable, and appealing results
