A Year of Remembrance

For Compendium, 2019 was a year of both celebration and reflection. As this publication commemorated its 40th anniversary, we also looked back on the amazing life of its founding editor, the esteemed D. Walter Cohen, DDS, who passed away in 2018. Throughout the year, Compendium published a series of tributes to the man who was paramount in launching and establishing this publication, the first university-affiliated dental journal to provide home-based continuing education. Through an assortment of photographs and eulogies, my long-time friend and mentor Dr. Cohen was memorialized by many leading healthcare organizations and key individuals in dentistry. From the American Academy of Periodontology, to the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine, to Drexel University College of Medicine, a range of notable groups and leaders gladly shared their expressions of love and respect. We encourage you to review each of these tributes, and as you do, take time to admire Dr. Cohen's many achievements, laugh at the various anecdotes, marvel at the man's genius, and applaud his relentless efforts to advance dental education.

In this our final issue of 2019, we feature a CE article on the use of dHACM-dehydrated deepithelialized human amnion/chorion membrane, which helps enhance wound healing and regulate inflammation and pain-in support of immediate implant treatment. The second CE offers a current review on dentin hypersensitivity in which the authors examine its etiology, diagnosis, and management.

This issue also reports on an observational study of a bone-level tapered implant, which demonstrated high reliability and clinician satisfaction in typical private practice situations, including immediate placement and loading. Two intriguing case reports are also highlighted: one on parallel implant placement in fully edentulous mandibular cases using a novel surgical aid, and another on a unique, minimally invasive approach to tooth replacement.

Finally, we end the year with a new addition. Compendium proudly announces the appointment of Jack Dillenberg, DDS, MPH, as its new section editor on Public Health. Dean Emeritus at A.T. Still University's Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health, where he served for 15 years as Dean, Dr. Dillenberg has been a tireless advocate for public oral health throughout his career. He is deeply committed to education on policy development in dental/oral care and its integration into primary care. We look forward to his future contributions to the journal.

Speaking of looking forward, 2020 is just around the corner, and Compendium anticipates another year of serving as a trusted resource for dental practitioners. Until then, best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season! Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Louis F. Rose, DDS, MD
