Bident Bipolar Intraoral Surgical System Brings Patient Care to a New Level

The safest, most precise technology—which has been the gold standard for brain surgery for the past 30 years—has also been available for dental soft-tissue surgery. For the past 10 years, Synergetics™ USA has offered the Bident Bipolar Intraoral Surgical System, an offshoot of its highly successful neurosurgical bipolar surgical unit, which provides dentists with a much safer, quicker, economical, and more accurate alternative to monopolar and laser systems.

Originating in the neurosurgical field, the Bident Bipolar system was developed as the drawbacks of monopolar electrosurgery became apparent. Monopolar units spread current throughout the patient, inadvertently coagulating blood vessels and destroying adjacent tissue. “We developed the bipolar system so that no current flowed through the patient. This prevents tissue damage,” says Jerry Malis, MD, Chief Scientific Officer and Executive Vice President. “With bipolar electrosurgery, we were able to do things that were previously impossible.”

About 10 years ago Synergetics introduced the Bident Bipolar Intraoral System. “We hear a lot of comments from general dentists and specialists (oral surgeons and periodontists) about clinical issues associated with electrosurgery systems they are using. For example, inflammation and tissue shrinkage following the use of monopolar electrosurgery that is affecting the desired end result of treatment. We knew that the application of bipolar technology (from our long clinical experience with its use in neurosurgery and the delicate tissue that we were treating there) would obviate these problems in dentistry—and certainly would be more beneficial for the patient.”

Bipolar electrosurgery provides a wide range of advantages for the dental practitioner: no heat or lateral current spread to adjacent tissues, no tissue charring or shrinkage, and no sparking when contacting implants or metallic restorations. Benefits for the patient include more rapid soft-tissue healing and significantly reduced postsurgical discomfort. This procedure is safe for patients with pacemakers/defibrillators or those patients on anti-coagulants who require bleeding management. The unit can safely contact tooth structure and bone without pulpal damage or hard-/soft-tissue necrosis. There’s no histologic change when it’s used for soft-tissue biopsy specimen retrieval. In contrast to monopolar and laser systems, which require a dry field to cut, the Bident unit works efficiently in irrigated or bloody fields. “It can be used anywhere, in any case, with complete safety,” Malis says.

Rita Meggison, Bident Product Manager, says, “Another major benefit of this system is that it’s plug-and-play technology, with a very short learning curve—it doesn’t require extensive training to use this technology. The dentist can take it out of the box and use it very easily.”

With the new 3-dimensional digital technologies, dentists should definitely consider adding the Bident system to their practice, Meggison says. “They won’t have to take into consideration any of the drawbacks associated with the monopolar and laser units. Our system preserves the integrity of the tissue, providing superior gentle results with bloodless troughing and no tissue shrinkage so that the gingival margin stays exactly where the doctor places it. Dentists are truly able to take full advantage of the investment in their digital equipment by using the Bident Bipolar Intraoral System.”
