OMNICHROMA: One Composite That Covers All Shades for an Anterior Tooth

Robert A. Lowe, DDS

Creating esthetic direct composite restorations that precisely match existing tooth color can be a difficult clinical challenge for even the most experienced clinician. Shades for most composite materials rely upon shade guide technology that dates back to the 1950s. Clinical reality, however, is that many composites do not precisely match standard shade guides let alone each other. This can be extremely frustrating for clinicians, especially with a patient who is especially particular about esthetic matching. Having a "universal," single-shade composite system like OMNICHROMA (Tokuyama Dental America, tokuyama-us.com) takes the guesswork and frustration out of shade selection. The resin-based dental restorative material provides a match in a majority of clinical situations. In the case presented, the clinician was faced with the exceptional challenge of not only having to match direct composite material to tooth structure but also trying to match a portion of a single central incisor seamlessly with the surrounding enamel. Additionally, because the restoration was at the incisal edge, typically a high-stress area during function, good retention was essential to support the small missing portion of the tooth. The use of OMNICHROMA enabled a beautiful, high-strength match to be achieved without reliance on a traditional shade guide.
