G-ænial™ Universal Injectable

Injects like a flowable, but builds like a stackable composite

Nader Yermian, DDS Private Practice Brentwood, California

Using one material to place direct composite restorations in both the anterior and posterior regions can present clinicians with many challenges. Fortunately, the new G-ænial Universal Injectable from GC America Inc. is truly easy to handle and manipulate for universal indications, including Class I, II, III, IV, and V restorations.

Because it's injectable, the material's consistency behaves more like a flowable, but its characteristics more closely resemble those of a traditional composite. In the past, I would never use a flowable material for larger fillings, especially those with an isthmus greater than 1 mm. The beauty of G-ænial Universal Injectable is that it doesn't flow everywhere. It stays where you place it, just like a traditional, stackable composite. It also doesn't stick to instruments. This allows me to create the anatomy that I desire in any situation, making G-ænial Universal Injectable ideal for restoring occlusal surfaces, cusps, and marginal ridges.

After I place G-Premio BOND in a thin layer on the pulpal floor, I can restore the tooth one axial wall at a time. G-ænial Universal Inject-able demonstrates excellent adaptation to preparations. Because G-ænial Universal Injectable can be injected into Class I and II cavities in a single increment up to 2 mm, shallow and smaller fillings can be completed with only one or two applications. The delivery syringe has a slim body that feels comfortable in my hand, and the ergonomically shaped plunger fits perfectly between my palm and finger. Less force is needed to extrude the product from the syringe, which features an extremely useful and longer 18-mm tip that can be bent with fingers, when necessary, to achieve better access to distal posterior areas.

With a high flexural strength of 173 MPa, G-ænial Universal Injectable is strong, wear resistant, and highly polishable. It also features excellent gloss retention that improves over time. Available in 16 shades, the material is highly resistant to discoloration, so restorations continue to look as good as they did on the day they were placed. Beyond restoration, various clinicians have also had success using G-ænial Universal Injectable to create anchors for clear orthodontic aligners.

In my experience, G-ænial Universal Injectable gives clinicians the best of both worlds. I can use it as a true flowable or as a stackable composite. When the material is appropriately layered, it allows me to create beautiful anatomy with less shrinkage stress. And because it demonstrates outstanding flexural strength and wear resistance, I feel confident using it to provide my patients with strong, highly durable, and long-lasting esthetic restorations.
