TurboVue® Ultrasonic Scaler

Illumination and power—where and when you need it

Howard Glazer, DDS, FAGD

For the last 42 years, I have been treating adults and children at my full-service practice. I think that it is safe to say that almost everyone in dental practice, whether they are a dentist or a dental hygienist, has worked with an ultrasonic scaling device at some point to remove calculus deposits and stains from patients’ teeth.

For many years, I had the traditional types of units, and they all worked very well. However, when I was introduced to the TurboVue®, I was immediately interested to see what kind of features had been incorporated because of Parkell’s excellent reputation for products, equipment, and materials.

When I saw the TurboVue up close, there were three main features that attracted my attention. The first, was the size of the scaler. It’s rather small, which is terrific because it takes up less counter and shelf space than other units.

The second, was that Parkell offers three inserts (TurboVueTM Straight Perio Tip V Light-Transmitting Insert, TurboVueTM Universal Tip V Light-Transmitting Insert, and TurboVueTM Burnett Power-Tip V Light-Transmitting Insert) that allow the LED light source to be transmitted right through the handpiece to illuminate the tip at the point of contact with the tooth. These tips dramatically improve visibility, making scaling procedures easier for not only the dentist, but also the dental hygienist, who doesn’t always have the advantage of wearing loupes with a headlight. Furthermore, hygienists don’t have to worry about adjusting the operatory light to focus on the where the treatment is being provided.

Other 30 KHz inserts from Parkell, including the GentleCLEANTM for sensitive teeth, also work well in the TurboVue. When using other inserts, light will still be transmitted onto the field, but not to the same degree as when using the specially-designed light-transmitting inserts that allow the light to go right to the tip.

The third main feature that I liked about this product was the adjustable power source, which allows me to easily change the power between low, medium, and high settings, depending on what is needed for the procedure. In addition, the expanded low-power range is great for patients with sensitive teeth.

Overall, using the TurboVue has impacted my practice positively. It facilitates improved performance by better illuminating the field than other types of units that I have used in the past, and it improves the patient experience by offering a greater degree of control in adjusting the power level. Compact, powerful, and adjustable—this unit has everything that I’m looking for in an ultrasonic scaler.
