Anutra Local Anesthetic Delivery System: Buffering Simplified

As a dentist in Manhattan, Gary Kaye, DDS, understands that time is of the essence. Taking his patients’ busy schedules into consideration is a key factor in growing his practice and keeping patients. However, when using traditional methods of delivering anesthesia, Kaye had to wait for up to 10 to 15 minutes for his patients to get numb, losing valuable time during the appointment. This workflow issue was solved when he began using the Anutra Local Anesthetic Delivery System by Anutra Medical.

“I was buffering anesthetic for some time and thought our method was fine, until I was introduced to Anutra,” Kaye says. “I am a proponent of buffering, and this system changed my workflow. It’s easy to use, it’s affordable, and we use it routinely now. I can’t tell you how much more predictable the anesthetic is in terms of time of onset and patient comfort.”

The Anutra Local Anesthetic Delivery System involves three parts: the Anutra Dispenser®, the Anutra Syringe, and the Anutra Cassette®. The buffered anesthetic is mixed then dispensed from the Anutra Dispenser, and it takes less than 10 seconds to be ready for delivery to the patient. The syringe is connected to the dispenser with a simple twist and enables the dentist to administer multiple doses with ease and comfort. Each Anutra Cassette allows you to consistently buffer up to 50 mL of anesthetic. This feature, coupled with the Anutra Dispenser and Syringe, allows you to buffer your desired amount of anesthetic when you want it.

Kaye likens Anutra’s delivery system to the introduction of new technologies in dentistry. “Before digital dentistry and CAD/CAM, we took impressions and sent them to the lab. Sometimes the restoration fit; sometimes it didn’t—with digital dentistry now it’s rare that it doesn’t. This is the same with Anutra. When we give an injection, we know right away that the patient will get numb, instead of waiting and being unsure,” Kaye explains.

This is a benefit for both the patient and the dentist. “The whole workflow changes when you can give an injection and the patient is numb within seconds—that reduces how many hours dentists spend just waiting for patients to get numb; you can just sit down and get to work,” Kaye comments. Not only does this cut down on the waiting time for the dentist, but it also reduces the anxiety level of the patient. An important feature of buffered anesthetic is that it can lower the high level of acid typically found in local anesthetics, which can reduce the burning pain after injection. Add in the benefit of being numbed immediately through the Anutra system, and patient satisfaction increases significantly.

The key factor of this system for Kaye is the level of predictability. “When I began using Anutra, I realized it was predictable in a way that the buffering I used in the past wasn’t. Sometimes the other method would work quickly; sometimes it wouldn’t. Once I realized that there was a system in which everything was so precise, there was no reason to go back, ” Kaye says.

As dentistry continues to evolve, new systems become available that dentists adapt to and incorporate into their workflows, and Kaye sees Anutra’s delivery system as one that is setting a standard. “It can be difficult to adopt a new procedure when you think what you’re doing is working, but my recommendation is to try it—I think all anesthetics will be buffered in most practices in the future.”
