NYU College of Dentistry Partnering with NYC Administration for Children's Services to Provide On-site, Easy Access Dental Care to Kids in Foster Care

Posted on Monday, May 7, 2018

The Administration for Children's Services (ACS) is partnering with NYU College of Dentistry to provide dental screenings to children in foster care onsite at the Nicholas Scoppetta Children’s Center via a mobile dental care program.

As part of this partnership, NYU College of Dentistry will offer weekly, 30-minute educational sessions on oral health at the Children’s Center, followed by screenings and restorative treatment (fillings). Children requiring additional treatment will be referred to and seen on expedited appointments at NYU College of Dentistry. As the partnership progresses, the goal is to provide similar dental services for the rest of ACS' programs through NYU where appropriate.

"Today's ACS is committed to enhancing the lives of the children we serve, and this new partnership, with NYU College of Dentistry, is one more way that we're providing the most comprehensive care possible to children in New York City," said ACS Commissioner David Hansell. "What this partnership means is that thousands of kids in foster care will have easier access to critical dental services — like screenings, fillings, and more — which will put them on track to a healthier life overall. I want to thank NYU College of Dentistry for its partnership and leadership."

"Studies conducted at the NYU College of Dentistry have demonstrated that when children lose the family structure that is needed to help manage their diet, brushing, and routine dental care, it affects their oral health, including an increase in tooth decay," said Mark S. Wolff, DDS, PhD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Cariology and Comprehensive Care at NYU College of Dentistry. "NYU Dentistry is committed through this program to begin the process of improving oral health for this most vulnerable group of children."

Each year, 51 million school hours are lost nationally due to dental-related illness. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, nearly 40 percent of children in foster care have significant oral issues. In addition to pain and infection, issues with oral health can mean difficulty eating or speaking.

According to NYU College of Dentistry, the single most common chronic childhood disease is dental caries (cavities); it occurs five times more often than asthma and seven times more often than hay fever. Children in poverty experience twice the caries rate as those who are not poor. They are four times more likely to be untreated for these issues.

All children in foster care receive medical and dental screenings when they first enter foster care as well as ongoing dental and medical care. Having this dental clinic on-site at the Children's Center will now mean faster, easier access to dental care.

The Nicholas Scoppetta Children's Center is a child-friendly facility that operates 24 hours a day, temporarily housing children and youth who are not placed immediately after removal from their homes. An interdisciplinary team of Child Protective Specialists, Social Workers, Nurses, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Child Care, and Administrative staff provide support and clinical services to children to reduce trauma associated with child maltreatment, as well as loss and separation from their parents and primary caregivers. This is a unique safe haven, reception, assessment, and temporary transition center for children entering the foster care system. All daily living needs are provided to protect vulnerable children in a safe and child-friendly environment on a 24/7 basis. This includes stabilizing fragile children while caring for their medical, social, emotional, and physical needs, and concurrently providing children with a smooth transition to placement.

Posted on Friday, May 4, 2018

Henry Schein, Inc. (Nasdaq: HSIC), the world's largest provider of health care products and services to office-based dental, animal health, and medical practitioners, announced today that it has entered the rapidly growing market for orthodontic aligners with its proprietary SLX™ Clear Aligner System.

The SLX™ Clear Aligner System is a complete solution that incorporates the popular Sagittal First/Motion 3D technology, a proprietary offering of the Company's Henry Schein Orthodontics (HSO) business. According to HSO's lead clinical advisor, Dr. Dave Paquette, Sagittal First/Motion 3D can significantly reduce the number of aligners needed for use in a typical case, providing meaningful time savings and clinical benefits to doctors and patients alike.

This new and innovative system offers clinicians and patients an intuitive and simplified treatment process, and was introduced today by Henry Schein Orthodontics at the annual session of the American Association of Orthodontists, in Washington, D.C.

The SLX™ Clear Aligner System, which has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, uses patented manufacturing processes to achieve aligner clarity and a precise fit for greater comfort and improved tooth control. The SLX™ Clear Aligner web portal will accept STL digital impressions from all leading intraoral scanners and, combined with an open-source platform, is easy to use.

"Henry Schein is committed to providing clinicians with the most advanced and patient-friendly treatment options available," said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein. "With the launch of SLX™ Clear Aligners, based on the Sagittal First/Motion 3D technology, we are advancing that mission while positioning the Company globally as a full-solution provider of innovative orthodontic products. We see considerable growth opportunities in this market, and we are pleased to provide clinicians a new way of satisfying the oral health needs of their patients."

The SLX™ Clear Aligner System provides an enhanced aesthetic orthodontic treatment option for consumers, as well as an easy-to-use case submission and treatment planning process for clinicians that offers high-quality outcomes. SLX™ Clear Aligners join HSO's growing family of innovative SLX™ Orthodontic solutions.

"HSO is excited to be entering the large and growing market for clear aligners," said Ted Dreifuss, General Manager of Henry Schein Orthodontics. "Clear aligners are gaining wider acceptance among patients and orthodontic providers alike. We have designed our aligner solution to provide a new choice for patients who are looking for either a simple aesthetic solution to problems such as minor crowding or for those requiring more extensive work to correct issues such as bite problems and moderate or severe crowding. With our easy-to-use intuitive interface, we believe orthodontists will spend less time submitting and approving their cases, further enhancing Henry Schein's mission to help clinicians focus on providing quality care."

With today's launch, Henry Schein Orthodontics will begin registration and training immediately. Case submission will begin on May 25.

Anutra Medical Supplies Anesthetic for Light Dental Studios’ South Sound Free Dental Day

Posted on Friday, May 4, 2018

Anutra Medical, a medical device company, has donated anesthetic supplies to support the South Sound Free Dental Day. This annual event is in its third year and is presented by Light Dental Studios, a multi-site dental care organization in the South Puget Sound, Washington area. Thirty-five doctors and over two hundred staff members from Light Dental will be donating their time to help provide select dental services to those in their community at no charge.

Prospective patients can visit Light Dental Studios’ Puyallup, University Place or Olympia locations between 8:00 AM PST and 1:00 PM PST on Saturday, May 5, 2018 to be assessed for care and may choose between a free filling or extraction.

The Anutra Local Anesthetic Delivery System, by Anutra Medical, has been the choice anesthetic delivery method for Light Dental Studios. The system leverages the science of buffering to reduce the high levels of acid found in local anesthetic. The result of buffering anesthetic provides a more comfortable experience for the patient. Many patients have been quoted saying that the injection was “painless” or that they “didn’t feel a thing” when they received an injection.

Not only is buffering beneficial to the patient’s comfort, it is also a more predictable way of administering local anesthetic for the provider. Buffered anesthetic is more reliable and has a higher likelihood of getting patients numb very quickly, each and every time. Traditional methods of anesthetic administration results in inconsistent results where some patients are unable to fully become numb or it is a time consuming process requiring multiple injections.

“Donating anesthetic to events like South Sound Free Dental Day allows all patients to receive a comfortable injection. Further, due to the speed of the anesthetic and the reliability, the doctors will be able to provide more care to more patients without running the risk of failed or slow-acting anesthetic,” says Jeff Daner, President and Head of Sales at Anutra Medical.

For more information on South Sound Free Dental Day, patients can visit the Light Dental Studios’ website at www.lightdentalstudios.com.

Pulpdent Corporation and UCLA School of Dentistry join forces to prevent early childhood caries

Posted on Wednesday, May 2, 2018

Pulpdent Corporation, a dental research and manufacturing company, has joined forces with the UCLA School of Dentistry to prevent early childhood caries (i.e., tooth decay in infants and young children). Pulpdent is donating 600 applications of Embrace Fluoride Varnish and 2,500 applications of Embrace Pit & Fissure Sealant to the UCLA Infant Oral Care Program (IOCP) in 2018.

Learn more about Embrace Prevention from Pulpdent.

According to research from UCLA and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, "early childhood caries prevalence has increased significantly in children ages 2-5 years" and "disproportionally affects lower socioeconomic and minority groups." Programs like the UCLA IOCP offer free education, prevention, diagnosis and treatment for underserved infants and children at UCLA's local Federally Qualified Health Centers. The program also trains UCLA pediatric dental residents, dental students, pediatric medical residents, and advanced nurse practitioner students in culturally sensitive preventative oral health care.

During his trainings, Dr. Francisco Ramos-Gomez, UCLA IOCP founder, talks about the components in different dental products and how they impact patient outcomes. He says that in many cases, "people think that all fluoride varnish treatments are the same but they're not." Dr. Ramos-Gomez and his team use Embrace Varnish from Pulpdent to treat children at the UCLA IOCP because Embrace releases fluoride, calcium and phosphate (the basic building blocks of teeth). Many other commercially available fluoride varnish treatments release fluoride but not calcium and phosphate.

Pulpdent will also provide Embrace Pit and Fissure Sealant to the UCLA IOCP program. Embrace is the first sealant that bonds to the moist tooth and contains no BPA, Bis-GMA or BPA derivatives. Research shows remarkable sealing ability and adaptation to tooth structure.

About PULPDENT® Corporation

Pulpdent Corporation is a family-owned dental research, manufacturing company and leader in bioactive dental materials, with headquarters in Watertown, MA. For over 70 years Pulpdent has been committed to product innovation, clinical education and patient-centered care. ACTIVA BioACTIVE™, developed by Pulpdent, is a bioactive restorative material that behaves much like natural teeth, supports the natural remineralization process, and helps seal out decay. This revolutionary material has won The Dental Advisor Top Bioactive Product Award for three years running.
